Economics of Technology
This study examines the industrial technologies that have supported Japan’s economic development by analyzing their historical evolution—from the postwar recovery and the period of high economic growth to the present—and by conducting international comparative analyses with East Asian and Western countries. Particular attention is given to the technological foundations that sustained Japan’s manufacturing competitiveness, including quality management (TQC/TQM), automation and robotics, the precision machinery sector, and the semiconductor industry, as well as their contemporary linkages to digital technologies such as AI, IoT, and data-driven production.
Furthermore, the research addresses the structural transformations of the global economy, including supply chain reconfiguration, decarbonization and green transformation (GX), geopolitical risks, and the recent re-evaluation of industrial and economic security policies. Through this multi-layered analysis, the study seeks to clarify the technological and institutional conditions necessary for the sustainable development of Japanese industrial technologies in the global era, ultimately contributing to a renewed vision for Japan’s industrial competitiveness.
