    We demonstrate high-definition, direct-printing of micron-scale metallic dots, comprised of close-packed gold nanoparticles, by utilizing the optical vortex laser-induced forward transfer technique. We observe that the spin angular momentum of the optical vortex, associated with circular polarization, assists in the close-packing of the gold nanoparticles within the printed dots. The printed dots exhibit excellent electrical conductivity without any additional sintering processes. This technique of applying optical vortex laser-induced forward transfer to metallic dots is an innovative approach to metal printing, which does not require additional sintering. It also serves to highlight new insights into light–matter interactions.

    Abstract

    Currently, there is considerable interest in applying colloidal assemblies to photonic and plasmonic devices. Optical tweezing enables the preparation of such assemblies at desired positions, but the assembly process occurs only in areas irradiated by laser light. Here, we demonstrate the collection and assembly of colloidal particles in areas beyond the irradiation area. The particles are taken into a micro droplet formed by optical tweezing in a thermo-responsive ionic liquid/water mixture. The confined particles aggregate as the droplet shrinks. The mechanism of confinement and aggregation of colloidal particles is discussed in view of the surface charge of the particles.

    <title>Abstract</title>
    An optical vortex possesses a ring-shaped spatial profile and orbital angular momentum (OAM) owing to its helical wavefront. This form of structured light has garnered significant attention in recent years, and it has enabled new investigations in fundamental physics and applications. One such exciting application is laser-based material transfer for nano-/micro-fabrication. In this work, we demonstrate the application of a single-pulse optical vortex laser beam for direct printing of ring-shaped structures composed of hexagonal close-packed, mono-/multi-layered nanoparticles which exhibit ‘structural color’. We compare and contrast the interaction of the vortex beam with both dielectric and metallic nanoparticles and offer physical insight into how the OAM of vortex beams interacts with matter. The demonstrated technique holds promise for not only photonic-based nano-/micro-fabrication, but also as a means of sorting particles on the nanoscale, a technology which we term ‘optical vortex nanoparticle sorting’.

    When an intense 1,064-nm continuous-wave laser is tightly focused at solution surfaces, it exerts an optical force on molecules, polymers, and nanoparticles (NPs). Initially, molecules and NPs are gathered into a single assembly inside the focus, and the laser is scattered and propagated through the assembly. The expanded laser further traps them at the edge of the assembly, producing a single assembly much larger than the focus along the surface. Amino acids and inorganic ionic compounds undergo crystallization and crystal growth, polystyrene NPs form periodic arrays and disklike structures with concentric circles or hexagonal packing, and Au NPs demonstrate assembling and swarming, in which the NPs fluctuate like a group of bees. These phenomena that depend on laser polarization are called optically evolved assembling at solution surfaces, and their dynamics and mechanisms are elucidated in this review. As a promising application in materials science, the optical trapping assembly of lead halide perovskites, supramolecules, and aggregation-induced emission enhancement–active molecules is demonstrated and future directions for fundamental study are discussed.

    Abstract

    The development of new methods to engineer lead halide perovskite crystals with a controlled band gap and emission properties is an active subject in materials science and chemistry. We present the preparation of mixed-halide lead perovskites by spatially- and temporally- controlled chemical reactions and crystal growth under an optical potential in unsaturated precursor solutions. The crystals are characterized by transmission and photoluminescence spectral measurements and X-ray diffraction analysis. When compared with the spontaneous formation of multiple crystals in saturated precursor solutions, the optical potential creates large single crystals with a high chloride composition, providing distinct blue and green fluorescent crystals of chloride–bromide lead perovskites. We discuss the formation of mixed-halide perovskites from the viewpoints of an increased rate of chemical reaction via the formation and desolvation of precursor complexes and a decreased free energy potential.

    Singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) and other reactive oxygen species receive great attention in chemistry and biology. Fluorescence sensing is one of the most promising and widely used techniques in the detection of O-1(2). Nonetheless, the selectivity and sensitivity of O-1(2) detection are highly depended on the structure, absorption band, stability and emission color of the fluorogenic sensor. We introduce novel and simple intramolecular electron donor-acceptor dyads that selectively and sensitively emit intense blue light in response to O-1(2). The systematic changes in the emission intensity of the sensors allow detection of O-1(2) by the naked-eye. Furthermore, the blue-shifted absorption and blue emission bands of the sensors ensure selective excitation of common photosensitizers using visible light. The sensors are synthesized by a simple and single-step reaction, which when combined with the exceptionally high stability of the sensors against visible-light irradiation, makes them promising tools for O-1(2) detection in chemistry, biochemistry, materials science and the life sciences.

    We demonstrate the growth of a tetragonal crystal of hen egg-white lysozyme (HEWL) in D2O buffer solution controlled by laser trapping with a focused continuous-wave (CW) near-infrared (NIR) laser beam. The focal spot was located at 10 mu m away from the edge of the target crystal that was generated spontaneously, and the crystal growth was observed although the focal spot size was much smaller than the distance. The growth rate of (101) and {110} faces of the tetragonal crystal was examined with various laser powers and polarizations. The rate observed under the irradiation was much different from those in spontaneous growth, namely, the growth rate of the {1 10} face showed a large decrease or increase depending on the irradiation time. The dynamics and mechanism of this unusual crystal growth behavior is discussed from the viewpoint of a large stable domain formation of the HEWL liquidlike clusters through liquid nucleation and growth and by considering the anisotropy of the cluster domain.

    We present the laser trapping-induced crystallization of L-phenylalanine through high-concentration domain formation in H2O and D2O solutions which is achieved by focusing a continuous-wave (CW) near-infrared laser beam at the solution surface. Upon laser irradiation into the H2O solution, laser trapping of the liquid-like clusters increases the local concentration, accompanying laser heating, and a single plate-like crystal is eventually prepared at the focal spot. On the other hand, in the D2O solution, a lot of the monohydrate needle-like crystals are observed, not at the focal spot where the concentration is high enough to trigger crystal nucleation, but in the 0.5-1.5 mm range from the focal spot. The dynamics and mechanism of the amazing crystallization behaviour induced by laser trapping are discussed from the viewpoints of the concentration increase due to laser heating depending on solvent, the large high-concentration domain formation by laser trapping of liquid-like clusters, and the orientational disorder of molecules/clusters at the domain edge.

    Laser trapping of molecules and proteins in solution at room temperature is made possible by irradiating 1064-nm continuous-wave (CW) laser with power around 1 W. Although conventional small molecules are not trapped at the focal point, molecules that can form clusters upon assembling and proteins whose size is close to 10 nm are gathered, giving unique assembly structure. Glycine in H<sub>2</sub>O shows crystallization, urea in D<sub>2</sub>O gives a millimeter-sized giant droplet, and cobalt oxide-filled ferritin protein confirms assembly followed by precipitation. Solute concentration, solvent, and laser power are important factors for determining trapping and assembling phenomena, and the laser focal position is very critical. These unique behaviors are realized by setting the irradiation at the air/solution surface, inside the solution, and at the glass/solution interface. Laser trapping-induced crystallization, liquid/liquid phase separation, and precipitation are compared with the previous results and considered. After summarizing the results, we describe our future perspective and plans.

    Quinacridone nanoparticles with a mean size of about 200 nm are successfully prepared using nanosecond near-infrared (NIR) laser ablation of its microcrystalline powders in heavy water. The absorption spectra of the formed colloidal solutions depend on the excitation wavelengths, which is eventually ascribed to number and energy of absorbed photons. beta-carotene has low photostability and is easily decomposed upon UV/VIS laser ablation of its solid, while its nanoparticles are prepared utilizing this NIR laser ablation technique. The advantage of nanoparticle preparation by NIR laser ablation is discussed.

    There describe research results that control of crystal growth is achieved by applying photon pressure of a focused CW laser beam close to glycine crystals generated spontaneously in solution, and that the Ostwald ripening are successfully demonstrated. Note that photon pressure generated by the focused laser can make it possible to cause a growth of the crystal located far from the focal point with about 1μm. We confirm that a large dense area generated around the focal spot plays an important role for the crystal growth. Two novel phenomena of the formation of mm-sized dense liquid droplet and crystallization in unsaturated solution related to the formation of the large dense area are also presented. These provide a principal insight into the elucidation of mechanism and process of this long-distance crystal growth.
