<p>We have developed an imaging method for observing electromagnetic fields using a conventional transmission electron microscope. The proposed method utilizes a hollow-cone Foucault/schlieren optical system to record images by using a series of electron beams illuminated at different tilt and azimuthal angles. The electromagnetic fields are then reconstructed numerically using sequentially recorded images. Specifically, an electron beam is tilted at a minute angle (on the order of μrad) relative to the optical axis and then rotated around the optical axis. The images are recorded at azimuthal angles every 10°. Each single-shot image is processed using a similar method based on phase-shift holography reconstruction to visualize the distribution of the deflection angle of the electron beam at the sample and its vicinity. Our experimental results demonstrate that this sequential recording and reconstruction method using a hollow-cone optical system is an effective method for observing wide-area electromagnetic fields with conventional transmission electron microscopes.</p>

  • Understanding capacity degradation in sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) electrodes insights from transmission electron microscopy

Ding Jiong, Mori Shigeo, Kakiage Kenji

    Journal of the Ceramic Society of Japan   133 ( 12 )   765 - 771   2025.12( ISSN:18820743 ( eISSN:13486535

     More details

<p>Sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) is considered a promising sulfur cathode material to suppress the shuttle effect, as the active sulfur in SPAN is atomically dispersed and covalently bonded to the conductive skeleton, thereby eliminating the presence of elemental sulfur. This structure significantly reduces the dissolution of lithium polysulfides into the electrolyte during cycling. To enhance our understanding of the charge–discharge mechanism of SPAN, this study employed transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to investigate and analyze the microstructural changes in SPAN. Our findings revealed that SPAN particles undergo repeated expansion and contraction, leading to the expansion and closure of internal cracks. Li2S nanocrystals appear in SPAN with lithiation and remain even when SPAN is fully delithiated. In parts of regions, sulfur migrates and accumulates at crack boundaries in the SPAN particles, forming Li2S nanocrystals with sizes ranging from 20 to 50 nm. These Li2S nanocrystals also persist even when SPAN is fully delithiated. The accumulation of sulfur and Li2S at boundaries hinders lithium-ion transport, preventing lithiation of the internal SPAN regions and causing electrochemically inactive zones. Consequently, this contributes to capacity fading and limits the overall battery performance.</p>

Meeting the growing demand for energy storage systems requires the development of batteries that satisfy the requirements of high safety, low cost, and high energy density. All‐solid‐state sodium batteries with sulfide‐based active materials are a promising energy storage technology because they satisfy these requirements. In particular, sodium‐containing iron sulfides are attractive for positive electrode active materials because of their high capacities and ionic conductivities. In this study, Na 5 FeS 4 is investigated as a positive electrode active material for all‐solid‐state sodium batteries. Na 5 FeS 4 is synthesized by ambient‐pressure heat treatment using sodium polysulfides. All‐solid‐state cells using Na 5 FeS 4 as a positive electrode active material exhibit a high reversible capacity of 480 mAh g –1 at ≈25 °C. The active material mainly became amorphous during the initial charge, and this amorphous state contribute to reversible charge–discharge with high capacity. This study advances the development of low‐cost and high‐capacity sulfide positive electrode active materials for all‐solid‐state sodium batteries suitable for large‐scale energy storage.
