    我々は,脳卒中片麻痺者(片麻痺者)の蹴り出し改善を目的に,中足趾節関節の背屈が可能なソールを開発した.本研究の目的は,開発したソールが片麻痺者の蹴り出し改善に寄与するか検討することである.対象は自立歩行が可能な片麻痺者10名である.これらの対象者に,既存の油圧調整式短下肢装具(従来型)と我々が考案したソールを内装したもの(改良型)を用意し,歩行動作を記録した.その結果,改良型は従来型と比較し,前遊脚期の足関節底屈抵抗トルクが有意に増加した(p<0.01).さらに,単脚支持期における腓腹筋の最大振幅値が有意に増加した(p<0.01).これらの知見から,中足趾節関節の背屈運動が可能なソールによって,歩行中の効率的な足関節底屈運動を導引し,片麻痺患者の力強い蹴り出しに寄与することが示唆された.(著者抄録)

    In this study, a Ti–6Al–4V alloy composite with uniaxial anisotropy and a hierarchical structure is fabricated using electron beam powder bed fusion, one of the additive manufacturing techniques that enable arbitrary fabrication, and subsequent heat treatment. The uniaxial anisotropic deformation behavior and mechanical properties such as Young’s modulus are obtained by introducing a unidirectional honeycomb structure. The main feature of this structure is that the unmelted powder retained in the pores of the honeycomb structure. After appropriate heat treatment at 1020◦C, necks are formed between the powder particles and between the powder particles and the honeycomb wall, enabling a stress transmission through the necks when the composite is loaded. This means that the powder part has been mechanically functionalized by the neck formation. As a result, a plateau region appears in the stress–strain curve. The stress transfer among the powder particles leads to the cooperative deformation of the composites, contributing to the excellent energy absorption capacity. Therefore, it is expected that the composite can be applied to bone plates on uniaxially oriented microstructures such as long bones owing to its excellent energy absorption capacity and low elasticity to unidirectionally suppress stress shielding.

    Microstructures of electrodeposited Ni were studied from the perspective of growth modes during electrodeposition. The electrodeposited Ni had a heterogeneous microstructure composed of nanocrystalline- and microcrystalline-grains. Electron backscatter diffraction analyses showed that nanocrystalline- and microcrystalline-grains were preferentially oriented to specific planes. Secondary ion mass spectrometry also revealed that coarse-grained regions had higher S content than that of finer-grained regions. Hence, microstructural heterogeneity in electrodeposited Ni is reflected by the overlap of inhibited and free growth modes. Our discussion surrounding microstructural heterogeneity also provides insight into other electrodeposited nanocrystalline systems.

    A solid solubility prediction system using Hume-Rothery parameters and first-principles calculation to obtain explanatory variables was devised, and the resulting coefficients of determination, R2, were compared. When we used the Hume-Rothery parameter, R2 was 0.715, and when we used the first-principles calculation results, R2 was 0.900, indicating the improved accuracy of prediction. We tested 10-fold cross validation to evaluate the generalization performance of the network. The number of explanatory variables was optimized using the stepwise method. R2 was maximized when eight explanatory variables were used. As a result of 10-fold cross-validation, R2 of the constructed solid solubility prediction system which uses eight explanatory variables was 0.6993. The mean absolute error for this network was 0.45. The common logarithm value was used as the explained variable. Thus, the solid solubility limit predicted from this network was on an average 0.35 to 2.85 times the true value.

    © 2019 The thermal stability of electrodeposited Ni–W alloys has been identified to be due to W segregation. Although a kinetic contribution has been recently proposed, namely, the formation of W-oxides at grain boundaries (GBs) by annealing, the formation mechanism is unclear. In this study, we annealed electrodeposited Ni–W alloys up to 600 °C; then, we examined the mechanical properties and microstructures to deeply understand the thermal stability of Ni–W alloys. Mechanical testing of annealed alloys demonstrated that the proof stress and hardness increased against the increase in annealing temperature in the range of 380–450 °C. At the mesoscale, microstructure observations revealed that the grain size was reduced with increasing temperature from 390 to 450 °C. Finer-grained microstructures were maintained up to the annealing temperature of 520 °C. At the nanoscale, grain boundary structures were directly observed, and the chemistry was also demonstrated. These nanoscale analyses detected S segregation at GBs and triple junctions, whereas oxides and precipitates likely to affect grain growth were not identified. Our results and discussion indicate that transition in the grain size after annealing can be explained by the conventional relationship between the annealing temperature and frequency of abnormal growth grains.

    © 2019 An Al-8Mg-based alloy with high strength and high ductility was developed by adding a grain boundary strengthening element. Zr was predicted to be the most effective element for grain boundary strengthening at 298 K from first-principles calculations. Then, an Al-8Mg-0.2Zr alloy was developed. Grain boundary analysis by high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy revealed that the added Zr segregated at grain boundaries in the Al-8Mg-0.2Zr alloy. The Al-8Mg-0.2Zr alloy exhibited tensile elongation of 49% with transgranular fracture, whereas the Al-8Mg alloy exhibited tensile elongation of 28% with intergranular fracture after tensile tests at room temperature. We succeeded in developing a high strength and high ductility Al-8Mg-0.2Zr alloy which compensates for the trade-off between strength and ductility in comparison with commercial Al alloys.

    © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Al and Al alloys electrodeposited from a dimethylsulfone (DMSO 2 ) bath are typically contaminated with S and Cl. Electrodeposited Al and Al alloys suffer from limited ductility since undesired impurities decrease plastic deformability. Herein, we report an electrodeposition process involving the use of a DMSO 2 bath that realizes an Al product with tensile elongation as large as ∼30%. Doping of tin chloride in the DMSO 2 bath resulted in a micrometer-scale grain microstructure with sub-µm Sn precipitates distributed along the grain boundaries of the electrodeposited Al. These Sn precipitates on the electrodeposits prevented S and Cl contamination, which is likely the main factor underlying the large tensile elongation in the electrodeposited Al. Furthermore, electrodeposition with varying concentrations of tin chloride pointed to that tin chloride showed enough impurities reducing ability even in trace amounts.

    © 2019 Acta Materialia Inc. Electrodeposited Ni and its alloys typically contain S due to crucial reagents used in the electrodeposition processes. The relative S concentration at the grain boundary (GB) increases when grain sizes are increased by thermal treatments, resulting in a transition from ductile to brittle failure. In this study, we theoretically explored effective solute elements for suppressing thermal embrittlement induced by S segregation to the GBs and experimentally verified the effect of a candidate solute. The GB segregation energies, interaction energy between S and solute, and embrittling potency energy were calculated from first-principles calculations for 57 Ni-based solid solutions. The results of these calculations are discussed based on the McLean and Rice–Wang models, which are used to identify effective elements to counteract the GB-decohesion by S segregation, such as B and W. For verification, electrodeposited Ni, Ni–B, and Ni–W alloys, containing the same S content, were prepared and their tensile behavior after annealing was examined. Although thermal embrittlement occurred in all electrodeposited samples, microstructure observation and fracture surface analysis indicated differences in grain size and S concentration at the GBs, resulting in embrittlement. These results revealed that W alloying in Ni-based electrodeposits has a high ability to suppress thermal embrittlement.

    Nanostructures of grain interior in electrodeposited nanocrystalline Ni-W alloys were evaluated by low-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (LAADF-STEM). LAADF imaging displayed sufficient contrast to sensitively reflect distortions of the crystal orientation. Conventional STEM images showed the nanocrystalline structures with grain size of ~30 nm. By combining these modalities, LAADF-STEM images captured variations in the crystal orientation within nanograins. In addition, Fourier transform-processed patterns revealed that the crystal lattice was already distorted even in the as-deposited state. The importance of strain-stored grains is discussed in terms of their potential mechanical properties.

High productivity and bath stability of electrodeposition for Al and its alloys from a dimethylsulfone (DMSO2)-aluminum chloride bath are highly desirable characteristics for a wide range of critical applications. However, a long-standing problem for such electrodeposits is S and Cl contamination, which results in limited ductility. In this study, we explored a reduction method for S and Cl in Al electrodeposits from a DMSO2 bath to facilitate plastic elongation of the electrodeposited Al. For 2–5:10 M ratios of aluminum chloride to DMSO2, tailoring the conditions of electrodeposition decreased the S and Cl contents to ∼0.2 at%. The addition of various metal salts revealed that gallium chloride further reduced the S and Cl contents to less than 0.1 at%. This reduction permitted the electrodeposited Al–Ga alloys to exhibit plastic elongation in tensile tests. Based on the results of experiments and first-principles calculations, we discuss the role of Ga in the growth mode of electrodeposits and its effect on grain boundary cohesion. Thus, we elucidate the mechanisms for realizing high strength and ductility in electrodeposited Al alloys.

    © 2019 World Scientific Publishing Company. A key property for the design of new shape memory alloys is their working temperature range that depends on their transformation temperature T 0 . In previous works, T 0 was predicted using a simple linear regression with respect to the energy difference between the parent and the martensitic phases, ΔE p-m . In this paper, we developed an accurate method to predict T 0 based on machine learning assisted by the first-principles calculations. First-principles calculations were performed on 15 shape memory alloys; then, we proposed an artificial neural network method that used not only computed ΔE p-m but also bulk moduli as input variables to predict T 0 . The prediction error of T 0 was improved to 49 K for the proposed artificial neural network compared with 188 K for simple linear regression.

    Thermal embrittlement due to sulfur (S) segregation to the grain boundaries (GBs) in electrodeposited Ni and Ni alloys have been previously reported. In this study, microstructural changes in electrodeposited Ni with 220 ppm S transitioning from ductile to brittle fracture were observed by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) to determine the types of microstructure that result in thermal embrittlement. Tensile tests of the electrodeposited Ni after annealing showed decreasing tensile elongation to zero with increasing annealing temperature or time. Auger analysis of the fracture surface indicated that thermal embrittlement was due to GB segregation of S. This behavior diverges from the average grain size and fraction of kernel average misorientation detected by EBSD analysis but can be explained by considering average size of the recrystallized grains with (111) orientation. Furthermore, the S concentration at the GBs estimated using the size of recrystallized grains agreed with the values obtained from the Auger analysis. Thus, the S-rich GBs that lead embrittlement, were formed primarily by recrystallization.

We explored the intrinsic ductility of these alloys, taking into consideration the relationship between the ductility and the orientation index and contents of the grain boundary embrittlement element. Applying multiple regression analysis to our findings and those from the literature we found that the ductility of Fe–Ni alloys can be predicted from their orientation index for the (2 0 0) plane and sulfur content. The analysis of our study points to the potential for intrinsic ductility in nanocrystalline Fe–Ni alloys greater than that of the present highest value of 24%.

    <p>Conventionally, the W content of a ductile electrodeposited nanocrystalline Ni-W alloy was only up to 2%. In this study, we investigated the relationship between bath compositions and W content of the electrodeposit. The W content could be increased as high as 3.8% by adjusting the bath composition, while the tensile elongation was maintained greater than 10%.</p>

    © 2019 The Japan Institute of Light Metals Effects of Zr addition on the intergranular fracture of Al-Cu-Mg and Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys were investigated. The alloys were Al-4.6 mass%Cu-1.5 mass%Mg (0.17 mass%Zr) and Al-7.5 mass%Zn-2.9 mass%Mg-2.0 mass%Cu (0.2 mass% Zr). All alloys were synthesized using high-purity aluminum with more than 99.999 mass%. The grain size and hardness of each alloy were made consistent by annealing and further aging treatment, respectively. It was revealed that the Zr addition suppresses intergranular fracture and improves the ductility under the condition that the grain size and hardness are the same. These effects of Zr addition appeared near the transition region from transgranular fracture to intergranular fracture. The first-principles calculation results indicated that Zr is the only element which segregates to the grain boundary and strengthens the grain boundary among alloying elements of Zn, Mg, Cu, and Zr in aluminum.

    © 2019 The Japan Institute of Light Metals. An Al-7.3 mass%Mg-based alloy with high strength and good hot rollability was developed by addition of grain boundary strengthening element. We predicted that Fe is the most effective element for grain boundary strengthening at 773 K from first-principles calculations. Then, an Al-7.3%Mg-62 ppmFe alloy and Al-7.3%Mg-124 ppmFe alloy were developed. Grain boundary analysis by HAADF-STEM revealed that added Fe segregated at grain boundaries in the Al-111 ppmFe alloy. The Al-7.3%Mg-62 ppmFe alloy and Al-7.3%Mg-124 ppmFe alloy exhibited good workability without crack by intergranular fracture, whereas an Al-7.3%Mg alloy exhibited poor workability with crack by intergranular fracture at 298-623 K. Also, the Al-7.3%Mg-124 ppmFe alloy showed the best workability, and when the Fe concentration was below the solid solubility limit, the workability improved as the amount of Fe added increased. We succeeded in developing a high strength Al-7.3%Mg-124 ppmFe alloy with good workability.

    ©2018 The Japan Institute of Metals and Materials. Contamination with sulfur causes deterioration of the mechanical properties of electrodeposited nanocrystalline iron (Fe) and its alloys. However, it is difficult to avoid this contamination for electrodeposition from a sulfate bath. In this study, we explored the processing parameters required to produce thick plates of electrodeposited Fe from a chloride bath containing no sulfur and examined the resulting mechanical properties. In a simple bath consisting only of iron chloride, the long electrodeposition required to produce bulk samples could not be performed due to the precipitation of hydroxide, which caused the voltage to increase beyond the limits of the equipment. The addition of ammonium chloride inhibited the generation of hydroxide and stabilized the voltage during the electrodeposition. In addition, a higher bath temperature suppressed the formation of micro-cracks on the surface of the electrodeposits. Furthermore, the appearance of voids on the surface was reduced by increasing the concentration of the iron source and decreasing the current density. On the basis of these results, we prepared a bulk sample of electrodeposited Fe with a body-centered cubic structure and average grain size of 3 5 µm. The electrodeposited bulk Fe exhibited a tensile strength of 649MPa and good elongation of 13.9%.
