    © 2020 by the authors. The convection control is important in terms of the heat transfer enhancement and improvement of the applied devices and resultant products. In this study, the convection control by a magnetic field from block permanent magnets is numerically investigated on the Rayleigh-Benard convection of paramagnetic fluid. To enhance the magnetic force from the available permanent magnets, pairs of alternating-pole magnets are employed and aligned near the bottom heated wall. The lattice Boltzmann method is employed for the computation of the heat and fluid flow with the consideration of buoyancy and magnetothermal force on the working fluid. It is found that, since the magnetic force at the junction of pair magnets becomes strong remarkably and in the same direction as the gravity, descending convection flow is locally enhanced and the pair of symmetrical roll cells near the magnet junction becomes longitudinal. The local heat transfer corresponds to the aected roll cell pattern; locally enhanced at the magnet junctions and low heat transfer area is shifted aside the magnet outer edge. The averaged Nusselt number on the hot wall also increases proportionally to the magnetic induction but it is saturated at high magnetic induction. This suggests the roll cell pattern is no more largely aected at extremely-high magnetic induction.

In order to understand the effects of the wall permeability on turbulence near permeable walls, spanwise flow field measurements are carried out for turbulent flows in channels with permeable bottom walls by a two-component particle velocimetry (PIV) system. The porous media used are three kinds of foamed ceramics which have almost the same porosity (∼ 0.8) but different permeability. The turbulent flow fields in the spanwise planes are discussed using instantaneous and statistical measurement data. At a small permeability Re (ReK), low speed and high speed regions, which form a similar streaky structure to that of solid-wall turbulence, are observed. In case of a large ReK, although some large scale striped patterns are observed, they are confirmed to be different from those of the solid wall turbulence structure.

In contrast to the well-established "standard" log-law wall function, the analytical wall function (AWF) as an advanced modelling approach has not been extensively used in the industrial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) applications. As the model was originally developed aiming at computations on relatively coarse meshes, potential stability issues may arise due to the pressure-gradient sensitivity if employing locally inappropriate mesh layers, typically associated with the complex geometry details. This work evaluates performance of the thermal AWF, as proposed by Suga [4], in conjunction with the main flow field computed employing the k-?-f turbulence model and the hybrid wall treatment (denoted as AWF-e) within the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) framework. The underlying turbulence modelling approach has been widely validated in numerous industrial applications, demonstrating capability (in terms of both accuracy and robustness) to capture near-wall transport phenomena with more fidelity compared to the standard or low-Reynolds-number variants of the k-ϵ turbulence model. The proposed AWF-e strategy is validated on several benchmarks, namely heated pipe, E-motor cooling jacket and IC engine flows. These flow configurations involve elevated temperature gradients and fluid property variations, typically encountered in the automotive applications. The results confirm reduced mesh sensitivity and superiority of the AWF-e over the conventional RANS wall heat transfer models.

To understand the effect of anisotropic permeability on surface turbulence, PIV measurements are performed for square duct flows over two transparent anisotropic porous structures whose ratios of the wall-normal to streamwise permeabilities are 0.8 and 7.8. The obtained results at Re=3500 and 8000 confirm that although turbulence is enhanced by the permeability, turbulence over and under the porous surfaces is insensitive to the wall-normal permeability compared with the other components when the wall-normal permeability is sufficiently large. Near the symmetry planes, Kelvin-Helmholtz type waves are detected at the porous surfaces. While the effects of the wall-normal permeability on the wavelengths are not observed, it is found that their characteristics are similar to those reported in the literature for boundary layer flows over porous media.

Turbulent conjugate heat transfer of air flow through a duct partially filled with aluminum porous material is studied by means of the lattice Boltzmann direct numerical simulation. The constant wall temperatures are imposed to the top and bottom walls with a temperature difference, while the adiabatic boundary conditions are applied to the lateral side walls. In addition to turbulent heat transfer of the air flow, the heat conduction of the porous material is simultaneously solved. Despite the confinement by the lateral side walls, the large-scale transverse wavy motion due to the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is developed just over the porous wall. It is found that the intensified turbulence over the porous wall due to the relaxation of the wall-blocking effect significantly enhances the secondary flow, and the advection by the enhanced secondary considerably contributes to the heat transfer near the top wall. In contrast, the heat transfer near the porous wall interface is dominated by the turbulent transport. Analyzing the volume and Reynolds averaged energy equation, we confirm that the heat flux term due to the mean velocity dispersion considerably contributes to the heat transfer deeply inside the porous wall while the advection by the macroscopic velocity induced by the penetrating secondary flow is significant near the porous interface.

    © 2019 Cambridge University Press. Particle image velocimetry measurements have been carried out to assess the fully developed turbulence in square-sectioned porous duct flows. To the bottom duct wall, this study applies two types of porous media whose porosities are approximately 0.8 and ratios of wall-normal to streamwise permeabilities are 0.8 and 7.8. Both over- and under-surface turbulence of the porous layers are discussed at inlet flow Reynolds numbers of and 7500. Cross-sectional secondary flows are detected with an enhanced magnitude of approximately 6 % of the inlet bulk velocity. The secondary flow pattern consisting of four large vortices is observed to be insensitive to the porous structures. Over the porous wall, although turbulence is enhanced by the permeability, it is confirmed that turbulence over and under the porous surfaces is rather insensitive to the wall-normal permeability compared with the streamwise permeability as seen in porous-wall channel flows. In the present range of streamwise permeability Reynolds numbers of, the wall-normal fluctuations become dominant once underneath the porous surface while the streamwise ones become dominant again deep inside the porous layer. Applying streamwise-spanwise plane averaging, which covers a 52 % area in the middle of the duct, to the flow quantities, it is confirmed that the correlations between the pore-scale Reynolds number and the log-law parameters are similar to those seen in a wide range of porous-wall channels. The above characteristics are generally the same as those of porous-wall channels in the same range of porosities and permeability Reynolds numbers even with the enhanced secondary flows. However, from the spectral analysis of flows at the porous walls, it is found that, near the symmetry planes, the wavelengths of the Kelvin-Helmholtz waves become a little shorter than those in turbulent porous-wall channels possibly because of the sidewall boundary layers, particularly at low Reynolds numbers.

    © 2019 Author(s). An algebraic nonequilibrium wall-stress model for large eddy simulation is discussed. The ordinary differential equation (ODE) derived from the thin-layer approximated momentum equation, including the temporal, convection, and pressure gradient terms, is considered to form the wall-stress model. Based on the concept of the analytical wall function (AWF) for Reynolds-averaged turbulence models, the profile of the subgrid scale (SGS) eddy viscosity inside the wall-adjacent cells is modeled as a two-segment piecewise linear variations. This simplification makes it possible to analytically integrate the ODE near the wall to algebraically give the wall shear stress as the wall boundary condition for the momentum equation. By applying such integration to the wall-normal velocity component, the methodology to avoid the log-layer mismatch is also presented. Coupled with the standard Smagorinsky model, the proposed SGS-AWF shows good performance in turbulent channel flows at Reτ = 1000-5000 irrespective of the grid resolutions. This SGS-AWF is also confirmed to be superior to the traditional equilibrium wall-stress model in a turbulent backward-facing step flow.
