    A model describing the dynamic behavior of a few-mode erbium-doped fiber amplifier (FM-EDFA) is derived using the average inversion level. In that model, when the amplification overlap factor and equivalent area are independent of time, the dynamic behavior of an FM-EDFA is described by a differential equation of the average inversion level. This condition is satisfied for an FM-EDFA with a ring-core erbium-doped fiber (EDF). The derived model is validated in simulations and experiments of transient and frequency responses of a 2-LP mode EDFA with a ring-core EDF.

    To realize a highly sensitive glass-capillary-encapsulated long-period fiber grating (LPFG) sensor, we propose filling the capillary with a liquid-phase material, which was not proposed previously. It was found theoretically that high sensitivity can be achieved by using a liquidphase filler with a thermal conductivity of 0.1 W/(m K) or more, large negative thermo-optic coefficient (TOC), and a refractive index of 1.46 (optical fiber cladding refractive index) or less. On the basis of theoretical results, ethanol, ethylene glycol, silicone oil #TSF-431, and silicone oil #TSF-451 were selected as liquid-phase fillers in this study. The shift of the resonance wavelength spectrum with respect to the unit temperature was used as the temperature sensitivity. The temperature sensitivity was determined to be 75.5 pm/°C when LPFG was filled with ethanol, 70.0 pm/°C when filled with ethylene glycol, 84.8 pm/°C when filled with silicone oil #TSF-431, and 86.8 pm/°C when filled with silicone oil #TSF-451. The use of liquid fillers with high thermal conductivity, a refractive index close to 1.46, and high TOC can significantly improve the temperature sensitivity compared with the case without fillers. It was also experimentally confirmed that high sensitivity is possible. Furthermore, a capillary-encapsulated LPFG sensor with a temperature sensitivity of 83.3 pm/°C was realized using silicone oil #TSF- 451, which showed the highest temperature sensitivity in our experiments.

    <p>We propose a network management method using a novel adapter that translates OpenFlow-based commands and vendor-specific commands using a single-board computer to achieve a low-cost centralized management of heterogeneous network devices including various vendors. The adapter is implemented in wired and wireless network devices and its operation is verified. Moreover, we compare the cost in two scenarios, i.e., the management of a smart home network and a small- and medium-sized enterprise network. The results show that the proposed method works efficiently and is low-cost than the conventional method.</p>

    It is important to reduce the cost of the sensing system to promote the social implementation of optical fiber sensors. The light source and the photodetector with analysis functions, e.g., optical spectrum analyzer, are the most expensive components of an optical fiber sensing system. To solve this problem, we have proposed an Ethernet-based temperature sensing system. This system uses an inexpensive optical transceiver (OTR) as a light source for the Ethernet and a photodetector and a single-board computer with temperature evaluation functions to reduce the system cost. In this letter, we propose a method to enhance the temperature sensing function in our proposed Ethernet-based temperature sensing system by using multiple OTRs with different output wavelengths and an optical switch to expand the measurement temperature range. In addition, we constructed the proposed system and conducted a demonstration experiment to expand the temperature range that can be measured using five OTRs, one optical switch, Raspberry Pi, and a long-period fiber grating as an optical fiber sensor. The experimental results show that the temperature range from 60 to 760 °C can be expanded with an error of approximately ±5 °C.
