    The low-temperature behavior of the lattice specific heat near structural quantum critical points (sQCPs) is compared between Sr1-x Ca x TiO3 and Ba1-x Sr x Al2O4 with optical and acoustic soft modes, respectively. We will show that the low-temperature lattice specific heat of Sr1-x Ca x TiO3 is almost independent of the Ca concentration, although a small dip appears in the Debye temperature (Theta(D)) at x = 0.001 near the sQCP composition. This behavior is in sharp contrast to that of Ba1-x Sr x Al2O4 that exhibits a large decrease in Theta(D) toward the sQCP. These results indicate that the character of the soft mode significantly affects the thermal nature at the sQCP.

    Sillen-Aurivillius layered perovskite oxyhalides Bi4MO8X (M = Nb, Ta; X = Cl, Br) are of great interest because of their potential as lead-free ferroelectrics in addition to their function as visible-light-responsive photo-catalysts. In this work, we revisited the crystal structure of Bi4NbO8Br (space group: P2(1)cn), revealing that the intralayer polarization is not based on the reported NbO6 octahedral tilting but is derived from the stereochemically active Bi3+ lone pair electrons (LPEs) and the octahedral off-centering of Nb5+ cations. The revised structure (space group: Ic) has additional interlayer polarizations (calculated: 0.6 mu C/cm(2)), in agreement with recent experiments on Bi4NbO8Br. The occurrence of polarization due to stereochemically active LPEs and Nb-site off-centering is similar to Aurivillius-type ferroelectrics (e.g., Bi2WO6), with comparable spontaneous polarizations in the in-plane direction (calculated: 43.5 mu C/cm(2)). This, together with the out-of-plane polarization, indicates that Sillen-Aurivillius compounds have great potential as ferroelectric materials.

  • Structural phase transition in cobalt oxyfluoride Co3Sb4O6F6 observed by high-resolution synchrotron and neutron diffraction Reviewed

    A structural transition was observed in non-centrosymmetric oxyfluoride Co3Sb4O6F6 at TS ∼180 K from a cubic phase (I4‾3m) to a c > a tetragonal phase (I4‾), through high-resolution neutron and synchrotron powder diffraction. In addition, specific heat, magnetization, and dielectric measurements were performed to investigate this phase transition. Although the specific heat and dielectric constant showed anomalies at TS, no transition to a ferroelectric phase was observed in the polarization hysteresis loop down to 30 K. Moreover, a magnetic structure analysis using neutron powder diffraction data revealed a transition from a paramagnetic phase to a G-type antiferromagnetic phase at TN ∼67 K, at which a peak was also observed in the specific heat measurements. The magnetic moments of Co2+ were aligned along the tetragonal c-axis with a Co2+ moment of 2.80(1) μB at 13 K. The rotation and deformation of the CoO2F4 octahedron due to the large displacement of F atoms were observed at TS from the structural analysis, which play an important role in the structural phase transition in Co3Sb4O6F6.

    The effects of structural quantum criticality on the strong-coupling superconductivity of (Sr1-xCax)3Rh4Sn13 have been investigated via electrical resistivity and specific heat measurements. We demonstrate that the lattice specific heat at low temperatures considerably increases toward the structural quantum critical point (SQCP), xc approximate to 0.9. The superconducting gap increases with x in the exact same fashion as the low-temperature lattice specific heat, clearly indicating that the abundant low-energy phonons cause strong-coupling superconductivity. Despite the electron-phonon interaction, which is much more enhanced than the electron correlation, the low-temperature electrical resistivity in the normal state varies as proportional to T2 near the SQCP. This finding suggests that structural quantum fluctuation affects the electron-phonon scattering.

    Layered perovskite oxyhalides Bi4MO8X (M = Nb, Ta; X = Cl, Br) are promising visible-light photocatalysts for water splitting, where the polar structure may enhance the conductivity of photocarriers. In this study, the domain structure of Bi4NbO8Br single crystal was investigated using piezoresponse force microscopy and transmission electron microscope. We observed a rare domain structure with a ferroelectric 180 degrees domain in the nanoscale ferroelastic 90 degrees domains developed in theabplane. We also discuss the effect of these domain structures on the dynamics of photocarriers, which may provide new ideas for the design of highly active photocatalyst.

    © 2019 American Physical Society. Amorphous solids are known to exhibit excess heat capacity that shows a hump near 10 K and diverges from the Debye T3 law at low temperature below 1 K. Here we report that these glassy features are also observed in an insulating crystalline solid. Substitutional chemical suppression of the structural phase transition temperature (TC) of the ferroelectric oxide Ba1-xSrxAl2O4 results in the disappearance of the TC at x=0.07. For the compositional window of x=0.2-0.5, the lattice heat capacity shows a large hump below 10 K and diverges from the T3 law below approximately 2.5 K. Synchrotron x-ray diffraction experiments on single crystals reveal the short-range correlation in the crystal structure that survives down to low temperature; this short-range correlation is responsible for the observed glasslike features in its lattice heat capacity.
