    <p>Large-scale production of nano-sized LTA-type zeolite particles by beads-milling and recrystallization method were demonstrated. The particles were finely milled, and their crystallinity decreased with increasing milling time. The beads-milled particles retained a zeolitic local structure of Al and Si but cause partial amorphization and loss of gas adsorption ability. Recrystallization recovered the long-range order of the zeolite crystal structure and gas adsorption ability. Smaller beads lead to finer particles and inhibit amorphization of the zeolite.</p>

    <p>Xonotlite, with a chemical formula of Ca<sub>6</sub>(Si<sub>6</sub>O<sub>17</sub>)(OH)<sub>2</sub>, has been widely used as a thermal insulation material due to its high porosity and chemical/physical stabilities. As a potential recycle use of Xonotlite, CO<sub>2</sub> fixation is promising when considering its high alkali content and macroporous structure. In this study, Xonotlite was chemically activated to form nanocomposites of silica and calcium salt by optimizing an acid treatment. It was found that Xonotlite treated with acetic acid at 1.0 mol/L keeps the original macroporous structure of Xonotlite, and simultaneously segregates calcium salt on the surface of the residual silica. The nanocomposite of silica and calcium salt exhibits the capability of CO<sub>2</sub> fixation and high cycle stability thanks to the unique structural feature of the composite.</p>

    The high-pressure behavior of a monomer and 2D polymerized C60 crystals were investigated using DFT-D3 calculations. Although covalent bonds were not observed in monomer P a 3 ¯ upon simple compression, C60 moieties in two-dimensional polymer phases (Immm and R 3 ¯ m phases) exhibited intermolecular electron density, which indicates the formation of covalent bonds between C60 moieties. The C60 crystals were highly compressed under high pressure; however, small compression was observed at the C60 moieties. Both internal energies and PV terms contributed similarly to enthalpy. The deformation of crystals prevented polymerization. These results suggested a different behavior from that of typical inorganic materials.

    <p>Stoichiometric hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanoparticles were prepared by the solution-precipitation method at 37 °C. During the 72-h maturation period, the Ca/P molar ratio first rapidly increased to >1.6, and then reached 1.67 relatively slowly. The crystallite sizes of the stoichiometric HAp nanoparticles were estimated to be 11.0(3) and 25.7(3) nm from 300 and 002 diffractions, respectively. The crystallite size in the [001] direction continued to increase after the 72-h maturation period at a constant Ca/P molar ratio of 1.67. The obtained stoichiometric HAp nanoparticles also exhibited higher thermal stability than commercially available HAP-100 and prevented grain growth during sintering. This material is suitable for use in various sintering methods.</p>

    <p>The reaction of stoichiometric hydroxyapatite (HAp) with different crystallinity in Mg<sup>2+</sup> aqueous solution was investigated using X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES). Crystallinity is one of important factors for the properties of HAp. Therefore, this study aimed to clarify the effect of crystallinity on the behavior of HAp in aqueous solutions. Stoichiometric HAp samples with different crystallinities were prepared using an aqueous solution precipitation method and subsequent calcination. The Mg-<i>K</i> XANES spectra of the HAp pellets after immersing in Mg(NO<sub>3</sub>)<sub>2</sub> aqueous solution were classified into two groups: those of Mg-doped HAp and Mg(OH)<sub>2</sub>. This difference is caused by the solubility of the HAp pellets in water, owing to their crystallinity. This result provides insights into the reaction mechanism of HAp in the human body and facilitates selection of suitable biomaterials.</p>

    The fabrication of nano-sized zeolites with an average size of 200 to 400 nm was attempted by the bottom-up process such as the hydrothermal technique, in which zeolite nucleation and crystal growth were controlled during the hydrothermal synthesis. Effect of hydrothermal parameters like synthetic temperatures, holding times, and compositions of starting materials on the microstructures of zeolites were mainly investigated. In addition, influence of aging of mixture of starting materials at room temperature before hydrothermal treatments was examined. In this study, in special, homogeneous zeolite A (LTA type structure) nanocrystals without an average size less than 100 nm and coarse zeolites over 500 nm were successfully synthesized by the present bottom-up process under optimum hydrothermal conditions at 60 oC for 3 hr after aging at room temperature.

    Transparent hygroscopic composite films using 4A zeolite particles with a primary particle size of 50 run, which is smaller than the wavelength of visible light, with the ability to absorb moisture as a filler were fabricated. Nano-sized 4A zeolite has the following problems as a filler of resin. The nano-sized particles easily agglomerate and it is particularly difficult to disperse into a hydrophobic resin. Therefore, in order to improve dispersibility, the surface of nano-size 4A zeolite was modified by using surface modifiers. Furthermore, in this work, it was found that the surface modifiers with different refractive indices resulted in mixtures of zeolite and resin with different optical properties. In other words, the use of a surface modifier with a refractive index close to that of the resin was found to yield a transparent hygroscopic film. Finally, a transparent resin sheet with zeolite content of 30wt% and the haze of less than 30% was fabricated. The dispersibility and transparency were improved by treating zeolite with a primary particle size of 50 run by a surface modifier of high refractive index, and mixing it with a resin of low refractive index.

    <p>Zirconia nanoparticles were synthesized by using the supercritical hydrothermal method from zirconium basic carbonate, which is insoluble in water at ambient temperature. The diameters of these nanoparticles were 10–20 nm. They contained both tetragonal and monoclinic phases. A long treatment in supercritical water induced the phase transition from the tetragonal phase to the monoclinic phase with the desorption of carbonate ions. These results indicated that the carbonate ions absorbed on the surface works as a stabilizer of the unstable tetragonal phase. The process developed here allows us to bypass wastewater treatment along with the product refining because byproducts are only water and carbon dioxide.</p>

    We clarified that the bandgap of inorganic materials is strongly correlated with their effective coordination number (ECoN) via first-principles calculations and experimental confirmations. Tin mono-sulphide (Pnma) and germanium mono-sulphide (Pnma) were selected as model cases since these materials successively alter the ECoN as the cell volume changes and show an uncommon relationship between cell volume and bandgap. Contrary to the common semiconductors, the bandgaps of SnS (Pnma) and GeS (Pnma) have a positive relationship with respect to cell volume. This unique phenomenon was explained by incorporating the concept of ECoN into the theoretical studies. The theory proposed in this study is widely applicable to semiconductors with low-symmetry structures. Further, we experimentally demonstrated that the bandgap of SnS (Pnma) can be broadly tuned by changing the unit cell volume via alloying with alkali-earth (A.E.) metals, which could allow SnS to be applied to Si-based tandem photovoltaics. Alloying with A.E. elements also stabilised Cl as an n-type donor, which enabled n-type conduction in the bandgap-widened SnS film in the SnS-based semiconductors.

    Chiral inorganic materials have attracted increasing attention in the fields such as catalysis, electronics, photonics, and sensing. A new class of functional materials with chirality is extensively explored. Herein, we demonstrate the synthesis of nanometric nickel layered hydroxide salt (Ni-LHS) modified with chiral amino acids, (D- or L-) phenylalanine (PHE). An alkalization reaction in a starting mixture of nickel-phenylalanine aqua complexes was induced by using propylene oxide, leading to intercalate and adsorb phenylalanine on the surface and into the interlayers of Ni-LHS in an in-situ manner. The chiral molecules also act as surface modifier to inhibit the extensive crystal growth and aggregation, to form Ni-LHS with a diameter of 2–3 nm in a state of stablly-suspended in a solvent. It was also found that Ni-LHS exhibit induced circular dichroism (ICD) in the spectral range of d-d transitions of Ni(II) metal centres. The layered nanomaterials with chiroptical response demonstrated here is a promising option as an advanced adsorbent for detection of molecules. [Figure not available: see fulltext.]

    Colloidal suspension of NiGa2O4 nanoparticles was synthesized by gel-sol method. Starting from an aqueous solution of Ni(NO3)2·6H2O, Ga(NO3)3·nH2O and a β-diketone ligand (acetylacetone), a precursory hydrogel was obtained through an epoxide-mediated alkalization. Then, a mild thermal treatment at 80 °C induces the deflocculation of the hydrogel, resulting in the formation of NiGa2O4 nanoparticles which is stably suspended in a solvent. The formation mechanism of the colloidal suspension was closely studied, revealing that chelation of acetylacetone to Ni cation with the formation of NiGa2O4 nanoparticles plays a key role to impart dispersion stability.
