    This paper reports the selective fabrication of a zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) cover layer over the outer surface of silica hard-shell microcapsules (HSMC) to improve the microencapsulation technique of phase change materials for heat storage materials. ZIF-8 was formed not only over the HSMC but also in the synthesis solution side when using a conventional batch operation owing to the rapid formation rate of ZIF-8 in the aqueous solution at 293 K. In this study, a semi-batch operation, which can control the concentration of the components in the synthesis solution by gradually dropping the components, was employed to decrease the formation rate of ZIF-8. X-ray diffraction results suggested that dropping ingredients strongly affected the obtained products; the addition of the Zn2+ aqueous solution into a 2-methylimidazole (Hmim) aqueous solution was suitable for the formation of ZIF-8, whereas the addition of an aqueous solution of Hmim into the Zn2+ aqueous solution formed Zn hydroxides as unfavorable by-products. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy results confirmed that the semi-batch operation with the addition of Zn2+ into the Hmim aqueous solution selectively formed a ZIF-8 cover layer over the HSMC. We conclude that the semi-batch operation is an effective procedure for suppressing the unfavorable homogeneous nucleation on the solution side and making heterogeneous nucleation dominant without any additives to fabricate the ZIF-8 cover layer.

    The role of hydrodynamic interaction between micron-sized particles on the motion of a single magnetic probe particle, on which an external magnetic force is exerted, is studied. The motion of a probe particle in an index-matched suspension of surrounding particles is investigated using an optical microscope and image analysis technique. When inter-surface distance is smaller than the diameter of probe particle, the velocity of probe particle is reduced but rarely affected by the size of surrounding particles. The reduction of probe particle velocity is well associated with Péclet number of surrounding particles, but the degree of the suppression becomes significant below the critical inter-surface distances. The hydrodynamic interaction becomes many-body problems under the condition, and as a result, the bulk viscosity becomes larger than that under complete dispersion.

    In this study, a Taylor-Couette flow reactor (TCFR) was applied to starch hydrolysis accompanied with an intricate viscosity change during reaction for the purpose of process intensification. In industries, several reactors are used in starch hydrolysis, namely gelatinization, liquefaction, and saccharification. It was possible to conduct a continuous starch hydrolysis with one TCFR. In addition, a sufficient reducing sugar yield was obtained in the Taylor vortex flow regime. However, the yield decreased at a higher effective Reynolds number (Re ) due to axial dispersion through a bypass flow generated by the wavy motion of Taylor cells. In order to immobilize Taylor vortex flow at this condition, a ribbed inner cylinder was employed which suppressed axial dispersion at the higher Re .     Gas absorption enhancement of gas-liquid slug flow by adding non-porous fine particles into the liquid phase was investigated. A glass tube with a millimeter-size diameter was used as the flow channel, and the gas and liquid slugs were air and distilled water, respectively. When the absorption rates of oxygen with and without the addition of non-porous silica fine particles in water were compared by the llquld-stde mass-transfer coefficient, k^ the rate with particles was enhanced and increased as the concentration and diameter of the particles increased. This u because the frequency of partlde circulation in the liquid slug increased at higher concentration, and the larger particles caused stronger disturbances at the boundary layer at the interface on the liquid-phase side.,,.

    © 2019 Elsevier Ltd and IIR The sedimentation and flow characteristics of micro-encapsulated phase change materials have been investigated. As a phase change material, trimethylolethane clathrate hydrate having 218 kJ kg−1 of latent heat was used and encapsulated in silica hard-shell microcapsules, which size distribution has two peak at 15 µm and 59 µm. A cationic surfactant, oleylbishydroxyethylmethylammonium chloride with a counter-ion, sodium salicylate was used as drag reducing additives and poly vinyl alcohol was used as a stabilizer. From the results, it was found that the combination additive prevents effectively the microcapsule sedimentation. The drag reduction was also observed to occur in the high Reynolds number region. Thus, the present additive was concluded to be promising for the latent heat transportation by use of silica hard-shell microcapsules containing phase change materials.

KGaA, Weinheim Biological liquid crystals, a rich set of soft materials with rod-like structures widely existing in nature, possess typical lyotropic liquid crystalline phase properties both in vitro (e.g., cellulose, peptides, and protein assemblies) and in vivo (e.g., cellular lipid membrane, packed DNA in bacteria, and aligned fibroblasts). Given the ability to undergo phase transition in response to various stimuli, numerous practices are exercised to spatially arrange biological liquid crystals. Here, a fundamental understanding of interactions between rod-shaped biological building blocks and their orientational ordering across multiple length scales is addressed. Discussions are made with regard to the dependence of physical properties of nonmotile objects on the first-order phase transition and the coexistence of multi-phases in passive liquid crystalline systems. This work also focuses on how the applied physical stimuli drives the reorganization of constituent passive particles for a new steady-state alignment. A number of recent progresses in the dynamics behaviors of active liquid crystals are presented, and particular attention is given to those self-propelled animate elements, like the formation of motile topological defects, active turbulence, correlation of orientational ordering, and cellular functions. Finally, future implications and potential applications of the biological liquid crystalline materials are discussed.

    © 2018 Elsevier B.V. This study investigated the position of ultrasonic irradiation source and reactor geometry on fragmentation rate of a layered compound, α-zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP). By numerically solving the acoustic pressure distribution using COMSOL Multiphysics®, it is clarified the mechanism whereby the operating factors influenced the α-ZrP dispersion to make a suggestion of guideline of the process design method. Two vessels made of glass with a flat-bottom and a spherical-bottom, respectively, were used. Although the flat-bottom vessel at lower horn position showed the best performance of fragmentation, the region of high acoustic pressure field in the flat bottom vessel sharply narrowed and the transmittance became prominently low. On the other hand, no significant difference of the transmittance value in the spherical bottom vessel between the cases of low and high horn positions could be observed and the spherical bottom vessel was robust for the horn position. These results suggest that not only the magnitude of acoustic pressure but also the size of high acoustic pressure region is also an important factor and a spherical bottom vessel is one of suitable shape which gives large size of high acoustic pressure region regardless of the horn position.

    © 2019 The Society of Chemical Engineers, Japan Batch distillation is a useful separation technique for obtaining a pure product from a multi-component mixture. However, it is less energy-efficient than continuous distillation. This paper describes the system we developed for an internally heat-integrated batch distillation column (Batch or Semi-batch HIDiC) to minimize the energy consumption of the batch distillation process. We simulated the isopropyl alcohol dehydration process as a non-ideal system. The applicability of the system was examined using a commercial process simulator, Aspen Plus Dynamics®, to evaluate energy-saving performance. The energy evaluations of the Batch and the Semi-batch HIDiC model were compared against the conventional batch distillation model. It was found that with the Semi-batch HIDiC, this system has the potential to reduce process time and energy consumption more effectively than with conventional batch distillation.

This study observed human motions of whipping conducted by five expert confectionery hygiene mistresses, because mixing performance can be easily estimated by change of physical properties in heavy cream. Mixing state of heavy cream was evaluated by an overrun which indicates the amount of gas phase in the cream. Rheological properties of the cream were also measured for mixing state estimation. Agitating behaviors were recorded by a high-speed camera. Fluid flow motion was numerically observed by the Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) method. The experts' motions were classified into two patterns, i.e. vertically elliptical rotation and horizontally reciprocating. Numerical analysis suggested that these motions with large amplitude produced large disturbances and high shear on the liquid surface and consequently enhanced the uptake of air as fine bubbles. It is considered that elliptical and reciprocating motions are effective for whipping because the shearing on fluid and efficient air uptake improve the whipping performance.

  • 香港城市大学のSteven Wang博士の招待により,国際共同研究に関する打ち合わせを行った。

  • 2019年度から3年間科研費事業「国際共同研究加速基金(国際共同研究強化(B))」の支援のもと,化学工学における複雑流体の渦動力学の体系化に取り組んでおり,国際共同研究のパートナーである国立台湾大学の研究グループとの打ち合わせを行った。流動可視化実験のノウハウを学ぶため,対面での交流を行った。また,台湾の他のグループ(国立精華大学,国立中央大学)との交流や共同研究基盤の構築も行った。
