Micrometer-scale organic liquid droplets are of particular interest due to their excellent lasing performance together with extreme flexibility and responsivity. Here, we report the synthesis of novel lasing microdroplets with suppressed spontaneous emission. A supramolecular complex of a dye and a cyclodextrin works as robust and excellent laser dye in the droplet. Moreover, the laser emission from the single droplet is strong enough for all directions irrespective of the observation angle and detectable without an objective lens.

Chiral 1,1′-bi-2-naphthol (BINOL)-substituted boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) derivatives with different numbers of phenyl groups at the 2 and 6 positions (denoted as nPh-B-BODIPY; n = 0, 1, 2) were newly synthesized to examine the aggregation-enhanced emission and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) in the red and near-infrared (NIR) regions. Upon injection of THF solution of nPh-B-BODIPY into H2O, 0Ph-B-BODIPY underwent controlled self-assembly to produce fibrous nanoarchitectures, whereas spherical nanoparticles were formed in 1Ph-B-BODIPY and 2Ph-B-BODIPY. Absorption and CD spectra of 0Ph-B-BODIPY nanofibers demonstrated a red-shifted and split spectrum corresponding to the 0-0 band, suggesting strong interaction between neighbouring 0Ph-B-BODIPY units. Such fibrous assemblies exhibited a broad emission spectrum with multiple bands ranging from the visible to the near-infrared (NIR) region due to the multiple aggregate states. Consequently, 0Ph-B-BODIPY nanofibers demonstrated a broad circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) spectrum in the red to NIR regions together with the enhanced dissymmetry factors (glum) relative to 0Ph-B-BODIPY (monomer) and 1Ph-B-BODIPY nanoparticles.

Near-infrared photoluminescence (NIR PL) at regions over 1000 nm is used by advanced optical technologies such as quantum communication and deep tissue bioimaging. We demonstrate that covalent attachment of a diarylethene derivative to single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) introduces sp3 carbon defects into the crystalline sp2 carbon networks of SWCNTs through chemical functionalization by which red-shifted and bright NIR PL band at 1142 nm appears. Moreover, its PL wavelength switching is achieved reversibly and repeatedly based on photoisomerization of the diarylethene moieties on the nanotubes. The photoswitching phenomena confirmed by spectroscopic measurements and theoretical calculations reveal that the band gaps for PL change according to the diarylethene isomerization on the nanotubes.

The mononuclear M(hfa)(3) complexes (M=Eu, Y) with a P-chiral diphosphine dioxide, tpdpb(=O)(2), were also prepared, and comparison of their photophysical properties for the Eu-III complexes revealed that significant chiral induction from the P-chiral centers arises on the achiral M(hfa)(3) units through intramolecular pi-pi stacking constraint in the dinuclear system.

Photochromic molecules display reversible isomerization reactions between two isomers accompanied by an exchange between heat and chemical potential. A considerable part of the absorbed light energy is stored in and released from the present E-type photochromic molecules, which undergo cyclization reactions under UV light excitation and backward reactions after application of oxidative stimuli. The photochromic nature, thermal stability, and cascade ring-opening reaction of the closed form isomers of eight photochromic terarylenes are studied, and energy storage efficiencies at a single wavelength, eta, as high as 23% are experimentally demonstrated. Their efficient photochemical quantum yield for the cyclization reaction markedly contributes to the high energy storage efficiency as well as showing the capability of efficient cascade cycloreversion reactions. Spontaneous cycloreversion reactions are well-suppressed because the forbidden nature of the cycloreversion reaction gives rise to sufficient heat storage duration.

A series of doped gold superatoms M@Au12 (M = Ru, Rh, Ir) was synthesized by capping with the bidentate ligand (Ph2)PCH2P(Ph2). A single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis showed that all the M@Au12 superatoms had icosahedral motifs with a significantly higher symmetry than that of the pure Au13 counterpart due to different coordination geometries. The Ru@Au12 superatom exhibited a room-temperature phosphorescence with the highest quantum yield of 0.37 in deaerated dichloromethane. Density functional theory calculations suggested that the efficient phosphorescence is ascribed to a rapid intersystem crossing due to the similarity between the singlet and triplet excited states in terms of structure and energy.

Photoirradiation of a pyridine solution of Ag-29 nanoclusters (NCs) with red photoluminescence (PL) at 680 nm activated intense PL in the near infrared (NIR) region, giving a PL quantum yield (PLQY) of 33% at 770 nm. The use of Au-doped silver NCs further boosted the PLQY to more than 45% at 800 nm. Photoirradiation is considered to induce a change in the charge localization in the NCs, leading to the formation of NIR emitting sites.

A molecular motor that has been previously shown to rotate when fueled by electrons through a scanning tunneling microscope tip has been functionalized with a terarylene photo-chrome fragment on its rotating subunit. Photoisomerization has been performed under UV irradiation. Variable-temperature H-1 NMR and UV-vis studies demonstrate the rotational motion and its braking action after photoisomerization. The braking action can be reversed by thermal heating. Once the rigid and planar closed form is obtained, the rotation is effectively slowed at lower temperature, making this new rotor a potential motor with an independent response to electrons and light.

Propagation and amplification of chirality are considered to play an important role in the chemical evolution of biological homochirality. Stereochemical communications have been demonstrated to have a significant effect on the formation of chiral hierarchical structures in helical polymers, surface assemblies and supramolecular polymers. The formation of supramolecular copolymers based on chiral and achiral bichromophoric perylenediimide (PDI) dyes having a binaphtyl- and biphenyl-core-bridging unit, respectively, was investigated in terms of chiral amplification and propagation. The biphenyl-bridged PDI dye was expected to perform as a prochiral component to adopt both right- and left-handed twisting structures with the free rotation over the phenyl-phenyl linkage upon partnered with the chiral binaphtly PDI dye in the coassemblies. The coassemblies between the chiral and achiral PDI dyes with dissimilar core units demonstrated the composition dependent control in the length of supramolecular nanofibers as well as amplification of optical activity.

We here report a systematic study of structural and conformational variations in a series of terarylene molecules designed for use as photohydride generators. This family of compounds have been shown to facilitate selfcontained hydride release, without the need for external sources of hydrogen in a manner analogous to previously reported photoacid generators. A systematic analysis has been carried out on the effects of minor structural changes on each of the three key constituent parts of the core terarylene framework. Through UV-vis, NMR, Mass Spectrometry and quantum photon counting methods, the effect of these changes in each part of the framework on hydride release efficiencies have been established. Based upon this detailed NMR and conformational DFT analysis have been carried out to quantify the yields of hydride release and to establish optimal structural motifs within the design of the photogenerator to maximize hydride release efficiencies.

Systems that show circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) are usually constructed in one of two possible ways: either covalently binding the chiral moieties (usually organic compounds) to luminophores (inorganic or organic compounds) or associating the luminophores as guests with chiral hosts (usually organic compounds). Herein, we propose inorganic-based CPL-active systems constructed by the "chiral host-luminescent guest" strategy, in which silica acts as a chiral host to endow various luminescent guests with CPL. The chiral silica was modified by silane coupling with amino or phenyl groups to allow interaction with luminescent guests, and then used in combination with acidic achiral dyes, lead-halide type perovskites, and aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens). Interestingly, when these achiral guests were noncovalently confined in surface-modified chiral silica, the guests showed chiroptical behavior in the circular dichroism (CD) spectra, and thus became CPL active, even though they are not inherently chiral. The surface functional groups on the silica play very important roles in transferring the chiral information from the silica to the guests. This work provides a new concept for constructing CPL-active systems using inorganic materials as a chiral source.

The efficient switching that can occur between two stable isomers of diarylethenes makes them particularly promising targets for opto- and molecular electronics. To examine these classes of molecules for electronics applications, they have been subjected to a series of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments, which are the focus of this Review. A brief introduction to the chemical design of diarylethenes in terms of their switching capabilities along with the basics of STM are presented. Next, initial STM studies on these compounds under ambient conditions are discussed. An overview of how molecular design affects the isomerization and self-assembly of diarylethenes at the solid-liquid interface as investigated by STM is then presented, as well as single-molecule studies under ultrahigh vacuum. The last section presents further prospects for molecular design in the field.
