Research subject summary

  • Climate change and the heat island effect in urban areas, caused mainly by carbon dioxide emissions, have significant impacts on people's lives and health. The building sector is responsible for one-third of these emissions, and reducing carbon dioxide emissions from buildings is now a national policy. Zero Energy Building (ZEB) and Zero Energy House (ZEH) concepts have emerged as a result. Increasing building envelope reflectivity, by incorporating retro-reflectivity into the outer skin, is a measure taken to address these issues. While we have achieved various results in retro-reflective research, we need to focus on optimizing the thermal properties of the envelope for the best possible energy savings for the building as a whole.

    This in-depth study explores the intricate dynamics of reflective materials, emphasizing their impact on the indoor thermal environment and urban heat island (UHI) mitigation. Examining diffuse highly reflective (DHR), general reflective (GR), and retro-reflective (RR) materials on a simplified building model during summer days, the research utilizes outdoor experiments to analyze air and surface temperatures, as well as solar radiation. Prioritizing key metrics—mean radiant temperature (MRT), operative temperature (OT), and solar reflectance (ρ)—the study uncovers nuanced distinctions in DHR, GR, and RR materials. Solar reflectance calculations consistently show higher values for DHR and RR materials compared to GR material, highlighting reflectance's pivotal role in influencing surface temperatures and indoor thermal environment. When evaluating the impact of exterior wall materials on building temperatures, RR material with a 76% reflectance performs similarly to DHR material (82%). Notably, with a 6% lower reflectance in RR, the temperature contrast between external and internal walls is only about 1.5 °C at its maximum, underscoring RR's effectiveness as an outer wall material for UHI mitigation and building energy conservation, surpassing both DHR and GR materials.

    The escalation of climate change caused more extreme rainfall, increasing flood damage in Japan since around 2010. Therefore, it is crucial to examine climate change's impact on extreme rainfall events over the past 100 years and assess whether the existing return level standards effectively address the requirements for mitigating urban flood risks in the present scenario. The annual maximum hourly rainfall data from six major cities in Japan are divided into two distinct periods: 1921–1970 and 1971–2020. These datasets were then subjected to fitting with the Generalized Extreme Value distribution using two methods: Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) and Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC). The results demonstrate that the MCMC method provides more precise and accurate estimates, resulting in a narrower range of uncertainty for the high period of interest. Furthermore, the return levels for the 100-year return period in Nagoya and Fukuoka, based on the data for 1971–2020, are 24.4 mm/h and 13.4 mm/h greater than the corresponding standard values, respectively. This suggests significant changes in extreme rainfall patterns in certain cities in Japan and highlights the need for Nagoya and Fukuoka to update their criteria for return levels based on the latest rainfall data using the MCMC method.
