  • Immigration modulates audiovisual emotional processing in adults: is this really an influence of the host culture? 査読

    Introduction

    Individuals from Western cultures rely on facial expressions during the audiovisual emotional processing of faces and voices. In contrast, those from East-Asian cultures rely more on voices. This study aimed to investigate whether immigrants adopt the tendency of the host culture or whether common features of migration produce a similar modification regardless of the destination.

    Methods

    We examined how immigrants from Western countries to Japan perceive emotional expressions from faces and voices using MRI scanning.

    Results

    Immigrants behaviorally exhibited a decrease in the influence of emotions in voices with a longer stay in Japan. Additionally, immigrants with a longer stay showed a higher response in the posterior superior temporal gyrus, a brain region associated with audiovisual emotional integration, when processing emotionally congruent faces and voices.

    Discussion

    These modifications imply that immigrants from Western cultures tend to rely even less on voices, in contrast to the tendency of voice-dominance observed in native Japanese people. This change may be explained by the decreased focus on prosodic aspects of voices during second language acquisition. The current and further exploration will aid in the better adaptation of immigrants to a new cultural society.

    This study investigated cultural differences in the perception of emoticons between Japanese and Dutch participants. We manipulated the eyes and mouth of emoticons independently and asked participants to evaluate the emotion of each emoticon. The results show that Japanese participants tended to focus on the emotion expressed with the eyes while Dutch participants put weight on the shape of the mouth when evaluating emoticons. This tendency is consistent with a previous cross-cultural study comparing people from Japan and the United States (Yuki et al., 2007).

    This study investigated the developmental paths in the use of audiovisual information for the perception of emotions and phonemes by Japanese speakers. Children aged 5 to 12 years and adults aged 30 to 39 years engaged in an emotion perception task in which speakers expressed their emotions through their faces and voices, and a phoneme perception task using phonemic information in speakers' lip movements and speech sounds. Results indicated that Japanese children's judgement of emotions by using auditory information increased with increasing age, whereas the use of audiovisual information for judging phonemes remained constant with increasing age. Moreover, adults were affected by visual information more than children. We discuss whether these differences in developmental patterns are due to differential integration processes for information indicative of emotions and phonemes, as well as possible cultural / linguistic reasons for these differences.

    In Japanese, some homophones can be distinguished by their lexical pitch accentual<br> patterns. When and how do Japanese children start using pitch accent information as<br> a cue to lexical distinction? In this research, we taught children two novel labels as<br> names for two different objects. One label was a novel homophone whose accentual<br> pattern was different from a familiar word, and the other, a novel non-homophone of<br> a familiar word. The children 's learning of these two labels was tested by a picture<br> fixation task and an object choice task. The two-year-old children learned the novel<br> non-homophone; however, they failed to learn the novel homophone (Experiment 1).<br> On the other hand, three- to five-year-old children succeeded in learning both the la-<br>bels, and their performance improved with age (Experiment 2). These results suggest<br> that Japanese children gradually develop the ability to use pitch accent information<br> as a cue to lexical distinction in words throughout their childhood. The findings are<br> discussed in terms of how Japanese children pay attention to pitch information in the<br> learning of words.

    In Japanese, pitch accent information related to words is useful for comprehending degraded speech sounds. During language development, therefore, can Japanese children utilize pitch accent for word recognition when speech sounds are degraded? In the present research, 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds were presented with low-pass filtered words, for which frequency components apart from fundamental frequency contours (pitch accent) had been erased, and asked to choose the picture that represented the meaning of each word. Although the percentage of correct answers was above chance in all age groups, 4- and 5-year-olds performed better than 3-year-olds. Moreover, the children's performance was correlated with their vocabulary size. These data suggest that children's skill in utilizing pitch accent is acquired by the age of 3 and develops with chronological age and vocabulary growth.

    単語アクセントには, 地域差や世代差によるゆれが見られる。日本人母語話者は, そのようなアクセントのゆれに対しても, 音韻情報に基づいて意味を解釈することで, 支障なくコミュニケーションを進めることができる。本研究は, このようなアクセントのゆれへの耐性が, いつから, どのようにして獲得されるのかを調べるために, 年少児（3～4歳）・年中児（4～5歳）を対象に, 正しいアクセント, あるいは誤ったアクセントで発音された単語を聴取し, 該当するターゲット写真を図版から選択する課題を行った。その結果, 年少児のターゲット選択数は, 誤ったアクセントで発音された場合に, より少なくなることが示された。一方, 年中児はアクセントの正誤にかかわらずターゲットを選択することができた。さらに, かな文字の知識がアクセントのゆれへの耐性を促進させる可能性を検討するために, かな文字を習得している幼児と, 未習得の幼児の間で課題遂行成績を比較したところ, 差は見られなかった。これらの結果より, 年中までにアクセントのゆれへの耐性が獲得されることが示された。考察では, この能力の獲得を促進させる要因について議論を行った。
