  • Dr. Jihyun Kim’s research focuses on ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs), and she has been a key contributor to the Telescope Array project, the largest UHECR observatory in the Northern Hemisphere. She investigates their nature and origin by analyzing arrival direction distributions and spectral features. Understanding UHECRs remains one of the most important unresolved questions in modern physics and astrophysics.

    Her recent work includes identifying a new excess of cosmic ray events potentially linked to the Perseus-Pisces Supercluster, as well as examining the declination dependence in the cosmic ray energy spectrum. These studies advance our understanding of how UHECRs originate and propagate across the universe.

    <jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>Optical emissions associated with Terrestrial Gamma ray Flashes (TGFs) have recently become important subjects in space‐based and ground‐based observations as they can help us understand how TGFs are produced during thunderstorms. In this paper, we present the first time‐resolved leader spectra of the optical component associated with a downward TGF. The TGF was observed by the Telescope Array Surface Detector (TASD) simultaneously with other lightning detectors, including a Lightning Mapping Array (LMA), an INTerFerometer (INTF), a Fast Antenna (FA), and a spectroscopic system. The spectroscopic system recorded leader spectra at 29,900 frames per second (33.44 s time resolution), covering a spectral range from 400 to 900 nm, with 2.1 nm per pixel. The recordings of the leader spectra began 11.7 ms before the kA return stroke and at a height of 2.37 km above the ground. These spectra reveal that optical emissions of singly ionized nitrogen and oxygen occur between 167 s before and 267 s after the TGF detection, while optical emissions of neutrals (H I, 656 nm; N I, 744 nm, and O I, 777 nm) occur right at the moment of the detection. The time‐dependent spectra reveal differences in the optical emissions of lightning leaders with and without downward TGFs.</jats:p>

  • At a kickoff symposium of the International Research and Education Center at Osaka Metropolitan University, aimed at fostering a more diverse environment for international researchers and students, I reviewed and analyzed the current situation and discussed how to strengthen and implement our efforts to make OMU a global hub for international talent.

  • We held a joint symposium between the International Research and Education Center at Osaka Metropolitan University and Universidad Mayor de San Andrés. I introduced the Department of Physics, as well as my research fields, to prospective international students in Bolivia so that they could consider Osaka Metropolitan University as a possible destination for their studies.

  • I conducted in-depth interviews with four international graduate students currently enrolled in the Graduate School of Science at Osaka Metropolitan University in order to better understand their lived experiences, identify friction points in the admissions process, and uncover specific support needs. These interview sessions were conducted as part of the effort to renovate the Graduate School of Science website in order to attract more international students. I summarized the interview findings, which were used as a basis for my presentation at a kickoff symposium for the International Research and Education Center and will also be uploaded to the website.
