• From Religious Mind to Religious Demand: The Positioning of Masahisa Uemura in the Philosophy of Religion in Japan Reviewed

Tadayoshi FURUSO

More details

Publishing type:Research paper (bulletin of university, research institution) International / domestic magazine:Domestic journal

This paper aims to situate the thought of Masahisa Uemura in the context of the philosophy of religion in Japan. Heavily influenced by Pascal, Vinet, and other thinkers of the Francophone world, Uemura discussed religion from the standpoint of religious mind. Like Uemura, Manshi Kiyozawa and Kitarô Nishida, who have already been placed within philosophy of religion in Japan, used “religious mind” or “religious demand” as a point of departure in elaborating their philosophy of religion. Uemura’s ideas connect deeply with those of Kiyozawa and Nishida. Although their contents were based on Christian beliefs, Uemura’s discussions on the philosophy of religion were aimed at helping readers to acquire a religious mind free from the constraints of Christianity, with reference to ancient and modern ideas and literature, both western and eastern. This style of thought is similar to that of Ryôsen Tsunashima, who discussed religion from a foundation of religious experience. Accordingly, by positioning Masahisa Uemura at the starting point of philosophy of religion in Japan, we can view this field as the development of various strains of thought, including those of Ryôsen Tsunashima, that have not been situated within Japanese philosophy of religion until now.

This paper examines Keiji Hoshikawa’s research on “Religion as a System of Language Games” in order to consider the effectiveness of Wittgenstein’s theory of language-games as a basis for analyzing conversation among people close to Ryôsen Tsunashima about their religious experiences and faiths.
Because Hoshikawa assumes that religious experience is private and internal, and that the language of religious experience is a private language, he sees Zen masters and disciples from different religious backgrounds and various religions from different religious traditions as playing separate language-games with their own systematic rules. At the same time, he also envisioned one language game that would allow for dialogue between the different language-games.
In response, this paper argues that conversations among people with different religious experiences and religious backgrounds can be viewed as one language-game. Furthermore, it suggests that discussions in the late Meiji era between those who understood religious experiences and those who criticized them, based on the modern way of understanding religious experiences, can be analyzed as one language-game.

To place Tsunashima Ryosen’s thought in the context of the philosophy of religion in Japan, the study clarifies the development of his philosophy of religion with the deepening of his religious experience. Until 1903, his philosophy of religion intendedto elucidate the reasons behind the objective reality and authority of religious symbols created by subjectivity. However, as he began to feel the existential God in 1903, he considered such thought unnecessary. Instead, he aimed to verbalize the human conditions of the Son of God by means of Christian and Pure Land Buddhist ideas. Furthermore, he began to practice Christian and Pure Land Buddhist prayer. In this manner, he developed his philosophy of religion as a post-religious philosophy that utilized the philosophy of religion and religious traditions. To the best of my knowledge, such thought is worthy of being placed at the origin of the philosophy of religion in Japan.

Tsunashima Ryōsen (1873‒1907) based his religious thought on seeing God, that is, feeling God and interacting with God. He did not align with the religious thought of his time that claimed that the individual self should be fused into God or the nation. He emphasized the importance of a separate individual personality that acts and works ethically with God.
This paper argues that Tsunashima was able to distance himself from late Meiji era trends of thought by emphasizing rational criticism in his religious thinking. First, we clarify that in his religious thought prior to his decisive religious experience of seeing God, faith and rational criticism were closely intertwined yet maintained their independent spheres of activity. Next, we explain that after the experience of seeing God, his thought comprised a critical reflection on faith and religious experience.

TSUNASHIMA Ryôsen (1873–1907) claimed, on the basis of his religious experience, that, while human beings sense themselves to be at one with God, they are “Children of God” who maintain their ethical autonomy and realize their ideals. Therefore, his thought is appreciated by some researchers because it provides a religious basis for ethical actions and is different from the mysticism and nationalism of the later Meiji era that tried to eliminate the autonomy of the Individual. However, we must examine whether the Individual, grounded in religious experience, can independently produce an ethical action in reality. To that end, we chronologically analyze the evolution of Tsunashima’s religious thought; further, on the basis of this analysis, we demonstrate that apart from some essays, such as “Yo ga kenshin no jikken (My mystical awareness of the presence of God),” in which he emphasized his mystical rapture, he consistently tried to demonstrate that the “child of God” devotes ethical efforts to his/her self-realization. We conclude that Tsunashima’s idea of the “child of God” theoretically explains a religious Individual who can produce ethical actions.
