    The large size geotextile sandbags filled with dredged soil are buried along the shore line to protect sea shore erosion. One of the geotextile sandbags at the Ooida coast in Miyazaki city was broken by high waves of the typhoon in 2014. Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) investigated the breakage mechanism of the geotextile sandbag. The reason of the breakage was that a concrete brock under the sandbag penetrated the geotextile. In this study, a series of the model tests were carried out to elucidate the breakage mechanism of geotextile sandbag by bending sandbags.

    The most powerful earthquake, the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake, occurred on March 11, 2011. The north-eastern region of Japan have been most seriously damaged by the tsunami waves devastated the Pacific coast. Total amount of tsunami sediment was estimated around ten million ton in Miyagi, Iwate and Fukushima prefectures. It is necessary to use the tsunami sediment soil by construction materials in reconstruction works in north-eastern area in Japan. In this paper, an author proposed a reuse method of tsunami sediment soil by mixing with stabilizers, such as steel slug and concrete sludge. To improve strength of tsunami sediment, the blast furnace slug was used, however, a long time is necessary to enhance the strength of soft soil improved by blast furnace slug alone. To accelerate the hardening time, the author added concrete sludge as an alkaline irritant to awake the potential hardening effect of blast furnace slug. The strength of tsunami sediment soil improved by blast furnace slug rapidly increased by adding the concrete sludge. The improved tsunami sediment achieved the target strength for construction materials within short period and it was applicable for the construction of embankment or fill material.

    Pullout resistance of reinforcement was very important factor to design the reinforced earth wall structure. Reinforced earth walls with discrete-layout reinforcements were constructed by considering the dilatancy effect. A series of small model test was performed to compare deformation behaviors. Difference in deformation behaviors of reinforced earth walls between normal-layout and discrete-layout reinforcements was discussed. The width of model reinforcement was changed among three types of the width such as full width, 10%, and 20% narrowing. In conclusion, horizontal displacement of front panel in 10% narrowing was smaller than that full width. The discretelayout has an advantage to reduce the horizontal displacement by selecting the reasonable width of reinforcement.

  • Effect of Surface Holding on Stabilizing Mechanism of Reinforced Natural Slope

    In recent years, various reinforced earth methods of natural slope are proposed. The authors also proposed a new reinforced natural slope method which consists of five main parts such as rock bolts, tie rods, steel wing plates, cap plates and pressure plates and has a holding effect of slope surface by combining with five parts. We have investigated and confirmed the surface holding effect on stabilizing mechanism of natural slope through direct and zone shear tests. In this paper, we investigated the surface holding effect through direct and zone shear tests and compared the proposed method with concrete frame method with reinforcements about the surface holding effect. And we also performed the same tests in a different ground condition. As the results, the surface holding effect on stabilizing mechanism of dense sand was clear in the zone shear test. It was confirmed that the proposed method and concrete frame method have similar shear strength and surface holding effect in the dense sand.

    In the 2004 Mid-Niigata Prefecture and the 2007 Noto-Peninsula Earthquakes, many road infrastructures, especially road embankments, suffered severe damages. Seismic countermeasures for road embankments had not been considered up to then; however, these earthquakes emphasized the necessity of seismic countermeasures for road embankments. A series of shaking table tests was performed to confirm the dynamic performance of road embankments with partially improved slope toes. The increase in dynamic performance, such as settlement and acceleration at the top of the embankment, was confirmed in the road embankments with partially improved toes.

    The Mid Niigata Prefecture Earthquake of 2004 was an inland earthquake characterized by damage focused in local and mountainous areas. The damage of road infrastructures is also marked by the characteristics of the local area. In order to prevent or reduce earthquake damage in the future, it is important to clarify the characteristics of the damage level and the road traffic performance in the local and mountainous area, and reflect them in future earthquake prevention measures.<BR>This paper highlights the damage of road embankments and discusses the effects of road closures on local societies, based on related documents and field investigations. The study also quantitatively estimates the damage levels of road infrastructures, road traffic performances in the local and mountainous areas and the relationships between the seismic intensity scale and both damage level and road traffic performance. From these evaluations, new lessons for future earthquake prevention measures have been obtained.

    This study proposed reinforcement method to prevent sudden change of road vertical alignment by faulting. It is reasonable to smooth road vertical alignment as the design concept of reinforcement for the road embankment. Based on this design concept, shaking table test of the embankment models carried out to demonstrate smoothing performance of road vertical alignment by some reinforcement methods.<BR>As a result, the embankment model put approach cushion slab on the edge of box culvert showed the high smoothing performance. Moreover, approach cushion slab shows a higher smoothing performance by combining with the geotextile and soil improvement.

    Most muddy soils are difficult to reuse as construction materials because of high water content and low strength, and the disposal sites for soils have been decreasing. Therefore, it is very important to develop a significant improvement method for such soils from the view point of natural resource preservation and environmental impact mitigation. The purpose of this study is to clarify the possibility of non-aging steel slag acting as an additive which affects the strength characteristic of muddy soils.Results of this study suggest that the strength of the muddy soil mixed with non-aging steel slag increases because the water content of the muddy soil decreases by the absorption of slag. The larger the mixing rate of the steel slag, the higher the CBR of the treated soils becomes. Also, the effect on strength continues during the two-day aging period. However, remarkable results are obtainable within the first day after mixing.

    Ground vibration characteristics generally have a relationship with surface ground conditions. Ground vibration characteristics were analyzed from the distribution of predominant periods by measuring micro-tremors in Kusatsu city, Shiga prefecture. The seismic micro-zoning map in Kusatsu city was made by using a geographic information system. The distribution of predominant periods was visually compared with surface ground conditions such as topographic and geological characteristics. The round ranges of predominant periods in all ground conditions could be grasped, in which the predominant period increased as the thickness of the surface layer increased.

    Because the Mid Niigata Earthquake in 2004 occurred at the local and mountainous regions, the highway facilities such as road embankments and road slopes were damaged severely and the road performance were interrupted at many sites. For future earthquake disaster prevention, it is very important to clarify the characteristics of damage factor, damage level and road performance induced by earthquakes.<BR>This study conducts to estimate the characteristics of damage level of road facilities such as embankment, slope and bridge and the regulation of road traffic after the earthquake based on the data obtained by field investigation and other references. Several effective lessons on the damage level and road performance just after the earthquake can be obtained in this study.

    Vibration arising from running cars propagates through soil resulting in a ground vibration in their neighborhood. This paper describes a measurement example conducted on a plane road located on the south side of the Kyoto prefecture. In order to examine the propagation property of ground vibration, road traffic vibration and microtremor were measured at surface ground and underground. Then, the results are compared with the results of high quality ground instrument, i.e. elastic wave exploration.

    In recent years, the utility of small specimens in a laboratory testing of soil has been recognized. In order to spread the use of small specimen furthermore, the effect of specimen size on test results must be investigated in every soil testing.<br>In this report, the effect of specimen size on a triaxial K0 consolidation test results of clays is investigated through the experiments. Specimens of three kinds of size are used in the experiments. A strain path controlled triaxial apparatus is used in a series of experiments. Also, an oedometer test is carried out at the same time. The Compression curves in a triaxial K0 consolidation tests almost match an oedometer test. Also, the specimen size is not associated on triaxial K0 consolidation test results of clays.<br>

    PC wall-pile barriers are practically used to isolate ground vibration originated from construction works, factories, road and railway traffics. Their effectiveness has been recognized through a number of past our studies.<br>In this study, the isolation effect of three PC wall-pile barriers with different weight was examined through field model tests. Three aggregates with different density were used to make PC wall-piles. Also, to generate the ground vibration, 2.5 kilograms weight was used. It was suggested through the field model test results that the weight of PC wall-piles affects their isolation behaviors.

    In the recent earthquakes, the liquefactions of sands containing fines and clays were reported. The authors carried out a series of cyclic torsional tests to investigate the effect of soil properties on liquefaction strength. As a result, three conclusions were obtained. 1)The liquefaction strength decreases as increasing the non-plastic fines and low plastic clays. Its tendency is clearer in case which the sand contains low plastic clay. 2)The liquefaction strength has a good relation between clay content. 3)The liquefaction strength has a good relation between the inter-fines void ratio.

    Many types of reinfrocements are used as the construction works of reinforced earth walls increases. In situ reinforced earth walls with wire grid and geosynthetic reinforcements were constructed to investigate their deformation behaviors and rainfall effect on deformation behaviors during construction. Consequently, both vertical and lateral deformations in the reinforced earth wall with wire gird reinforcement were smaller than those with geosynthetic reinforcement. Also, the effect of rainfallon deformation behavior was recognized.

    As an effective reuse method of surplus soil and sludge, the authors proposed the crushed cement-stabilized sludge which is made of cement, polymer, surplus soil and dewatered sludge.Its geotechnical properties and applicability to the drainage material in sand drain and sand compaction pile methods were investigated.The geotechnical properties were almost similar to those of general granular materials except high alkaline.The crushed cement-stabilized sludge was applicable to the dranage material judging from its acceleration effect of soil consolidation.

    In the 2004 Mid-Niigata Prefecture and the 2007 Noto-Peninsula Earthquakes, many road infrastructures, especially road embankments, suffered severe damages. Seismic countermeasures for road embankments had not been considered up to then; however, these earthquakes emphasized the necessity of seismic countermeasures for road embankments. A series of shaking table tests was performed to confirm the dynamic performance of road embankments with partially improved slope toes. The increase in dynamic performance, such as settlement and acceleration at the top of the embankment, was confirmed in the road embankments with partially improved toes.

    The authors performed a series of pullout tests to elucidate the reinforcing mechanism of steel grid reinforced earth and to evaluate the bearing resistance mobilized on transverse members. The bearing resistance was major part of the total pullout resistance in the steel grid reinforced earth, which was equally mobilized on each transverse member in case of wider interval between transverse members than 200mm and increased in proportion to the number of transverse members. It is because longitudinal members of steel gird reinforcement hardly extended during pullout tests and all transverse members equally displaced. Considering the bearing resistance characteristics of steel grid reinforced earth, the authors proposed an equation to estimate the bearing resistance which was based on the bearing capacity theory. The applicability of the proposed equation was confirmed through the comparison between analytical and experimental test results for both frictional and cohesive-firictional backfill soils.
