Research subject summary

  • The physical properties of pai-conjugated molecules can be precisely controlled by structural modification. The goal of our projects is to create organic compounds with unique electronic, optical, and magnetic properties. In addition, we are developing precisely designed macromolecules such as dendrimers that can be thought of as highly organized nanostructures. From this point of view, we are conducting research on the development of efficient construction methods for pai-conjugated molecules and nanoscale molecules.

    Abstract

Two types of dendrimers with a bipyridine unit in the center of their rigid backbones were prepared. One dendrimer has two azide groups and the other has one ethynyl terminal. These dendrimers were coupled by the copper‐mediated Hüisgen 1,3‐dipolar cycloadditions of the ethynyl and azide terminals to afford a trimer with three bipyridine cores. The addition of Fe(II) to a solution of the trimer resulted in an absorption change characteristic of the formation of tris(bipyridine)Fe(II) complexes. The structural properties of the tris(bipyridine)Fe(II) core are likely reflected in the conformation of the timer because the bipyridine units are attached to the rigid backbones.

A small fused polycyclic molecule containing a phenothiazine and diazapyrene skeleton as the donor and acceptor, respectively, has a redox potential similar to those of the corresponding donor and acceptor molecules, indicating that the inherent electronic properties of the donor and acceptor were retained due to weak orbital interactions.

<p>We designed and synthesized a triphenylphenylnitroxide–(nitronyl nitroxide) dyad with a structure isoelectronic with trimethylenemethane. Crystal structure analysis demonstrated that the dihedral angle between the nitroxide and nitronyl nitroxide moieties was excessively small due to the steric effects of the triphenylphenyl moiety. The coplanarity of the two radical systems induced an excessively strong ferromagnetic intramolecular interaction (2<i>J</i>/<i>k</i>B ≥ +2000 K; <i>H</i> = −2<i>J</i><b>S1/2</b>•<b>S1/2</b>).</p>

In recent years, Bulk heterojunction organic solar cells (BHJ OSCs) based small molecules take leading position of industrialization for their considerable opto-electronic properties and uncomplicated fabrication process. Materials based on cyclopentadithiophene (CPDT) have been widely used thanks to their interesting structural and electronic characteristics. Here we report a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of a CPDT-based material namely 6,6′-(2,5-bis (hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene) bis(2-methyl -4H- cyclopenta [2,1-b:3,4-b'] dithiophen-4-one) (CPDT-alt-BHP) as donor small molecule in a BHJ OSC. The synthesized molecule shows a rigid and planar structure with small band gap energy. The electronic properties have been investigated by means of Density Functional Theory (DFT) at B3LYP/6-31g(d) level of theory. The studied molecule displayed an optical absorption in the visible region with nm. Transition density matrix (TDM) plot was carried out to get insight into the hole-electron coherences at the first excited state. The photovoltaic parameters of CPDTBHP:[70]PCBM system were simulated using wxAMPS software. The designed BHJ OSC exhibited respectable fill factor (FF) of 81.13%, short-circuit current density (Jsc) of 6.089 mA cm-2 and power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 4.922%. The studied compound offers significant structural and optoelectronic properties that could be enhanced via judicious molecular tuning.

<p>Organic-based open-shell π-electronic molecules are promising components for next-generation electronic devices because of the diversity in their design. In the past two decades, nitronyl nitroxides and its related radicals were widely utilized for organic spin sources mainly because of their stability. These derivatives were generally prepared by the condensation reactions of a corresponding bis-hydroxylamine compound with various aldehydes followed by oxidation. However, the procedure was unsuccessful sometimes particularly when highly electron-donating or electron-accepting aromatic aldehydes were used. One of the key approaches for solving this problem is to develop metal-introduced nitronyl nitroxide at the C2 position: This radical-metal complex can be used as a stable equivalent of the C2-H deprotonated anion of the parent nitronyl nitroxide and can be applied to the cross-coupling reagent to introduce the nitronyl nitroxide skeleton in the reaction with aryl halides. We have also found that the developed radical-metal complexes have metal-dependent low oxidation potentials and one of them can be converted to a new iminonitroxide-Au trimer complex with a quartet ground state. Here, we report recent progress of synthetic methods of new functional nitronyl nitroxides as "π-system figuration for open-shell molecules" and their unique electrochemical and magnetic properties.</p>

An artificial allosteric system composed of a zinc porphyrin moiety as a ligand-binding site, diphenylanthracene moieties as sterically bulky shielding units, and bipyridine terminals as Fe(II) ion-binding sites, was designed, synthesized, and characterized. The allosteric system forms an [Fe(bpy)3]-type complex in the presence of Fe(II) ions and induces a large conformational change in the alkyl side chains and shielding units, in which the anthracene groups would cover both the top and bottom of the porphyrin Zn(II) center. Consequently, the ligand-binding ability of the zinc porphyrin unit was allosterically suppressed. We found that the formation of the Fe(II) complex resulted in a 9.5-fold reduction in the binding constant between the zinc porphyrin and 3,5-bis(3,5-di-<i>tert</i>-butylphenyl)pyridine at 20 °C. Comparisons of entropy and enthalpy changes in the absence and presence of Fe(II) ions led to the conclusion that the allosteric suppression was mainly due to the destabilization of the Zn(II)-coordinated complex owing to the steric repulsion between the ligand and the shielding unit.

We have designed and synthesized chiral molecules with nitronyl nitroxide (NN) radicals directly bound to the chiral centers, (<i>S</i>)-1,3-dioxolane-4-NN (<b>1</b>) and (<i>R</i>)-oxazolidine-4-NN (<b>2</b>). These radicals were synthesized from <small>D</small>-mannitol in four steps for <b>1</b> and from <small>L</small>-serine in six steps for <b>2</b> in moderate yields. They were characterized by means of mass spectrometry, electron spin resonance, elemental analyses, and X-ray crystal structure analyses. Their magnetic properties were also investigated using a SQUID magnetometer. The temperature dependence of paramagnetic susceptibility (χp) indicates the presence of a weak antiferromagnetic intermolecular interaction with <i>J</i>/<i>k</i>B = −3.1 K and <i>θ</i> = −5.5 K for <b>1</b>, and a weak ferromagnetic intermolecular interaction with <i>J</i>/<i>k</i>B = +0.5 K for <b>2</b>. We also succeeded in preparing the metal complex [Mn(hfac)2(<b>2</b>)]2–[Cu(hfac)2], which was characterized by a strong antiferromagnetic interaction (<i>J</i>/<i>k</i>B = −140 K) between [Mn(hfac)2] and <b>2</b> along with a much weaker antiferromagnetic interaction (<i>J</i>/<i>k</i>B = −0.11 K) between the [Mn(hfac)2(<b>2</b>)] unit and [Cu(hfac)2].

Dendritic architectures provide attractive scaffolds for the precise arrangement of considerable numbers of antenna chromophores. Multichromophoric antennas are advantageous for obtaining intense absorption over the entire visible light spectrum. The strategic arrangement of various antenna chromophores produces the lowest excitation energy gradient for efficient energy transfer. Large light-harvesting systems can be constructed by the proper arrangement of the antennas.

Photoinduced charge separation of a phenothiazine–anthraquinone dyad <b>1</b> with a rigid bicyclo[2.2.2]octane spacer was investigated by means of picosecond and nanosecond transient absorption and time-resolved ESR spectroscopies. Irradiation of the anthraquinone chromophore in <b>1</b> produced the charge-separated (CS) state in THF. Time constants of the formation and the decay of the CS state were determined to be 1.3 ns and 1.0 µs, respectively. Time-resolved ESR showed spin-polarized all-emission signals due to the formation of the CS state via the triplet mechanism.

Dendrimers containing rigid conjugated backbones were prepared by a convergent method where the attachment of dendritic branches and the extension of phenylene-ethynylene units were alternatively manipulated on the structure of AB2 substituted phenylacetylene in a combination with Suzuki-Miyaura and Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions. These dendrimer structures were applied for the construction of several light-harvesting antennas and charge-separating systems. The conjugated network inside the dendritic structure was shown to play an important role as a mediator in both the photoinduced energy- and electron-transfer processes. In addition, we describe a novel methodology for the stepwise construction of shape-persistent assemblies using the dendrimers with conjugated backbones as the key modular building blocks. These examples demonstrate advantage of the dendrimer with conjugated backbones for the construction of nanoscale molecular devices such as artificial photosynthetic systems.

Photoinduced charge transfer is one of the important processes for the conversion of solar energy into chemical and/or electric energies. Recently, various studies including multi-step electron transfer processes have investigated. However, these systems do not always exhibit efficient, long-lived CS states. One of the most promising strategies to obtain long-lived CS states seems to be a spin control approach. Here, we report on photoinduced charge-separation of a Pt-porphyrin-viologen dyad and a triphenylamine-Pt-porphyrin-naphthalenediimide triad. In these complexes, the Pt-porphyrin moiety acts as a triplet photosensitizer. The transient absorption spectra in nano-second laser flash photolysis exhibited absorption bands assignable to the donor radical cation and the acceptor radical anion, indicating the generation of the CS states with relatively long lifetime.

Recently, a number of electron donor and acceptor dyads and triads have been designed and synthesized in order to search for systems of long-lived radical ion pairs. Here, we have designed and synthesized a new system of bipyridine-diacetylide platinum linked with electron donor and acceptor moieties. Bipyridine-diacetylide platinum complexes are known as good phosphors at room temperature, which can be utilized as a triplet photosensitizer. We have succeeded in highly efficient generation of spin-correlated charge separated states with relatively long lifetime by the excitation of the platinum complex moiety.

Pincer-type Pt-complexes have attracted much attention as new materials possibly applied to molecular electronics. In order to add a new functionality to pincer type Pt-complexes, we designed and synthesized (nitronyl nitroxide)-directly introduced Pt-complexes. The oxidation of these radical-Pt-complexes selectively produced the tetravalent Pt(IV) complex or the cationic (nitrosonium nitroxide)-Pt(II) complex, depending on the oxidation conditions. We report the detailed synthetic procedures and crystal structures of these complexes.

Organic high-spin molecules have attracted continuing attention as important building blocks of molecule-based magnets. Nitronyl nitroxide radical (<B>NN</B>), imino nitroxide radical (<B>IN</B>) and tert-butyl nitroxide radical (<B><I>t</I>BuNO</B>) have been well studied as components of organic high-spin molecules because of their stabilities and metal-complexation abilities. For the creations of new high-spin building blocks with extraordinary strong intermolecular spin-spin interactions, we have designed and synthesized a directly-linked (nitronyl nitroxide)-nitroxide diradical (<B>NN-<I>t</I>BuNO</B>) and (imino nitroxide)-nitroxide diradical (<B>IN-<I>t</I>BuNO</B>). These diradicals are very stable even in aerated conditions. ESR spectra in frozen diethyl phthalate at low temperature showed clearly spin-allowed and spin-forbidden transition signals assigned to triplet species of diradicals. The measurements of magnetic susceptibility demonstrated that the diradical are in a triplet ground state with a large intramolecular exchange interaction.

Recently, we have shown that simple triphenylamine-naphthaldiimide dyads using highly twisted (diphenylethynyl)benzene spacers give long-lived charge separated states of microsecond order with high efficiencies. For understanding the photophysical properties of these dyads, we have designed and synthesized similar triphenylamine-naphthaldiimide dyads linked with non-twisted or twisted oligophenylene as spacers whose lengthes are shorter than those of diphenylethynyl)benzene. In the twisted dyad system, it was found that triplet charge separated state was generated via the intersystem crossing within the radical ion pair.

Photochemical electron transfer reactions provide a good tool to investigate such system. We have previously shown that phenothiazine trimer radical cation exhibits a strong intramolecular CT band because of its unique structure. When the phenothiazine trimer framework is incorporated in an intramolecular electron transfer system, the initially formed radical ion pair as well as the geometrically relaxed radical ion may be observed. Recently, a number of electron donor and acceptor dyads and triads have been designed and synthesized in order to search for systems of long-lived radical ion pairs. Here, we have designed a new system of bipyridine-diacetylide platinum linked with electron donor and acceptor moieties. A bipyridine-diacetylide platinum chromophore is known as a good phosphor at room temperature. Here, we utilized this chromophore as a triplet photosensitizer. Excitation (355 nm) of the bipyridine-diacetylide Pt (II) moiety produced a long-lived charge separated state with a high quantum efficiency. In this presentation, we report their details including the study of time resolved EPR measurement.

Nitroxyl radicals have played important roles as building-blocks of molecule-based magnets because of their stability and metal-coordinated ability. Recently, we have designed and synthesized a new nitroxyl-diradical composed of nitronylnitroxide (NN) and tert-butylnitoxide (<I>t</I>BuNO). Temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility showed that the diradical has a triplet ground state with ca. <I>J</I> = +300 K. An X-ray crystal analysis of the diradical showed that the dihedral angle between NN and <I>t</I>BuNO is 65 degree. A much stronger magnetic interaction can be expected by decreasing the dihedral angle between two radicals. For the realization of stronger exchange interaction, we have designed a new diradical, NN-triplenylphenylnitroxide (TPPNO). Computer calculation suggested that NN-TPPNO has a considerably small dihedral angle between NN and TPPNO (ca. 21 degree) due to the moderate steric hindrance. In this presentation, we report the synthetic study of NN-TPPNO and its magnetic properties.

We prepared a rigid conjugated oligomer with flexible C11 alkyl side chains as novel building brocks for snowflake-shaped dendrimers. 2,2'-Bipyridyl terminals were incorporated in both the conjugated and the side chains to control a conformation of flexible side chains by metal complexation. The oligomer was mixed with FeCl2 at room temperature in toluene-methanol (1:1) to form deep red solution. The UV-vis spectra of the solution show MLCT bands around 500 nm characteristic for a [Fe(II)(bpy) 3]2+ type complex. The UV-vis spectroscopic titration indicated almost quantitative formation of the 1:1 complex. In addition, ESI-MS showed molecular ion peak for the 1:1 complex at <I>m</I>/<I>z</I> = 656. The detailed properties and structure of complexes will be presented.

Here, we have designed a new system with bipyridine-diacetylide platinum linked by electron donor and acceptor moieties. The bipyridine-diacetylide platinum complex is known as a molecule emitting phosphorescence at room temperature, which is utilized as triplet photo-sensitizer in our proposed system. The desired platinum complexes have been prepared from a corresponding donor (triphenylamine) and acceptor (naphthaldiimide) acetylene derivatives, and bipyridine-platinum complex by mixing them in dichloromethane. With the nanosecond laser excitation at 355 nm, the absorption band assigned to the triphenylamine radical cation species and that of the naphthaldiimide radical anion species were observed in the transient absorption spectra of the platinum complex, which indicates the generation of the charge-separated state. The charge-recombination lifetime was estimated to approximately 200 ns. In the presentation, we discuss detailed photophysical properties of those platinum complexes.

We prepared Zn porphyrin-anthraquinone dyads with polar and less-polar substituents (1a and 1b, respectively) on the conjugated bridge. A series of model compounds, 2a and 2b, were also synthesized to investigate the effect of the dipole moment of the substituents on the electron transfer rate. To evaluate the efficiency of electron transfer, the fluorescence study was examined in dichloromethane. The model compounds with a phenyl terminal (2a and 2b) showed an identical fluorescence spectrum with strong intensity. This result indicates that the fluorescence intensity is independent on the dipole moment of the substituents for the phenyl terminal dyads (2a and 2b). On the other hands, the fluorescence was effectively quenched in the anthraquinone derivatives (1a and 1b). 1a revealed a lower fluorescence intensity than 1b, indicating that the presence of polar substituents effectively enhances the quenching efficiency. The detailed synthetic procedure and photo-physical properties of the dyad 1 will be presented.

Snowflake-shaped dendrimers are advantageous to assemble multiple functional groups and provide attractive building blocks for the construction of nano-scale molecular devices and machines. Here, we prepared a covalently linked assembly of the five snowflake-shaped dendrimers and investigated photo-physical properties.Sonogashira coupling reactions of the snowflake-shaped dendrimers with an iodo and three phenyl terminals and four ethynyl terminals at the end of conjugated chains afforded the desired assembly. The UV-vis spectrum of the assembly in THF showed characteristic bands for porphyrin units (lambda max = 433 nm, 519, 559, 601, 649 nm). Fluorescence at 614, 657, and 719 nm (phif = 0.063) is observed for the assembly in THF by excitation at 571 nm. From the shape and intensity of the fluorescence spectra of the assembly and model compounds, the efficient energy transfer process from the outer Zn-porphyrin units to the inner free-base porphyrin unit was clarified.

The detailed synthetic procedure and properties of the dendron will be presented.

Recently, we have prepared new oxygen-bridged triphenylamines. We now report syntheses, structures, and magnetic properties of FeCl4- and GaCl4- salts of the oxygen-bridged triphenylamines. These salts were synthesized by the oxidation of the neutral triphenylamines using thianthrenium radical cation salts (FeCl4- and GaCl4-) as an oxidant. From the X-ray structure analysis, the followings became apparent, 1) the structures of FeCl4- and GaCl4- salts were isostructural each other, 2) intermolecular short contacts were observed between the adjacent radical cations or between the radical cations and counter ions. We report the structures and magnetic properties of these salts.

We prepared the dendron 1 with both Zn porphyrin and C60 terminals from the previously reported dendron 2. Incorporation of the C60 terminals was achieved by the coupling reaction of C60 with acetylide anion. The anion was generated from dendron 1 using LHMDS as a base. The UV-vis absorption spectrum of dendron 1 in DMF has characteristic absorption bands for the Zn porphyrin unit (Soret band: lmax = 430 nm, Q-bands: 562, 603 nm) as well as the C60 absorption band at ca. 330nm accompanied with weak long-wavelength bands. The detailed synthetic procedure and photophysical properties will be presented.

     More details

Request for collaborative research:The private sector, such as other institutions

    Type of research exchange:Joint research

    Application fields / methods etc:基板と分子を結合させることにより、従来よりもさらに小さなピコメータースケールの構造を基板上に作ることが可能となる。

    Core knowledge, technology, information etc:巨大分子システムの合成

    Expected ripple effect:
