    We study the dynamics of vorticity distribution and vortex generation induced by shear flow instability in a phase-separated two-component Bose-Einstein condensate by means of numerical analysis of the Gross-Pitaevskii equations. Our previous study has classified the pattern formation of the interface by the Weber number We, defined by extending the theory on the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in classical fluids. On the straight interface of a two-component superfluid with shear flow, there is a flat distribution of vorticity called a vortex sheet. When We << 1, this vortex sheet deforms like a finger and quantized vortices are generated at the tip of the fingers. On the other hand, for We >> 1, the microscopic properties in the vortex sheet become more important, where the vorticity distribution and vortex generation show different dynamics from that for We << 1. When the interface is large, the vorticity forms a stripe structure and vortex-antivortex pair formation subsequently occurs. When the relative velocity is fast, vortices cannot be released from the interface into the bulk because the localized vorticity has not reached the single quantum circulation kappa.

    The domain-area distribution in the phase transition dynamics of Z2 symmetry breaking is studied theoretically and numerically for segregating binary Bose-Einstein condensates in quasi-two-dimensional systems. Due to the dynamic-scaling law of the phase ordering kinetics, the domain-area distribution is described by a universal function of the domain area, rescaled by the mean distance between domain walls. The scaling theory for general coarsening dynamics in two dimensions hypothesizes that the distribution during the coarsening dynamics has a hierarchy with the two scaling regimes, the microscopic and macroscopic regimes with distinct power-law exponents. The power law in the macroscopic regime, where the domain size is larger than the mean distance, is universally represented with the Fisher's exponent of the percolation theory in two dimensions. On the other hand, the power-law exponent in the microscopic regime is sensitive to the microscopic dynamics of the system. This conjecture is confirmed by large-scale numerical simulations of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equation for binary condensates. In the numerical experiments of the superfluid system, the exponent in the microscopic regime anomalously reaches to its theoretical upper limit of the general scaling theory. The anomaly comes from the quantum-fluid effect in the presence of circular vortex sheets, described by the hydrodynamic approximation neglecting the fluid compressibility. It is also found that the distribution of superfluid circulation along vortex sheets obeys a dynamic-scaling law with different power-law exponents in the two regimes. An analogy to quantum turbulence on the hierarchy of vorticity distribution and the applicability to chiral superfluid He3 in a slab are also discussed.

    We revisit the fundamental problem of the splitting instability of a doubly quantized vortex in uniform singlecomponent superfluids at zero temperature. We analyze the system-size dependence of the excitation frequency of a doubly quantized vortex through large-scale simulations of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation, and find that the system remains dynamically unstable even in the infinite-system-size limit. Perturbation and semi-classical theories reveal that the splitting instability radiates a damped oscillatory phonon as an opposite counterpart of a quasi-normal mode.

    We show theoretically that a collision of two superfluid droplets can effectively cause a two-dimensional symmetry breaking phase transition. Three-dimensional nucleation of quantized vortices and/or hedgehogs in the collision are considered the formation of domain walls and/or point vortices due to the Kibble-Zurek mechanism in a projected two-dimensional space. This problem is generally applicable to arbitrarily ordered media that undergo spontaneous breaking of continuous symmetries.

    Domain size distribution in phase separating binary Bose-Einstein condensates is studied theoretically by numerically solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equations at zero temperature. We show that the size distribution in the domain patterns arising from the dynamic instability obeys a power law in a scaling regime according to the dynamic scaling analysis based on the percolation theory. The scaling behavior is kept during the relaxation dynamics until the characteristic domain size becomes comparable to the linear size of the system, consistent with the dynamic scaling hypothesis of the phase-ordering kinetics. Our numerical experiments indicate the existence of a different scaling regime in the size distribution function, which can be caused by the so-called coreless vortices.

    Percolation theory is applied to the phase-transition dynamics of domain pattern formation in segregating binary Bose-Einstein condensates in quasi-two-dimensional systems. Our finite-size-scaling analysis shows that the percolation threshold of the initial domain pattern emerging from the dynamic instability is close to 0.5 for strongly repulsive condensates. The percolation probability is universally described with a scaling function when the probability is rescaled by the characteristic domain size in the dynamic scaling regime of the phase-ordering kinetics, independent of the intercomponent interaction. It is revealed that an infinite domain wall sandwiched between percolating domains in the two condensates has a noninteger fractal dimension and keeps the scaling behavior during the dynamic scaling regime. This result seems to be in contrast to the argument that the dynamic scale invariance is violated in the presence of an infinite topological defect in numerical cosmology.

    We show theoretically that periodic density patterns are stabilized in two counterpropagating Bose-Einstein condensates of atoms in different hyperfine states under Rabi coupling. In the presence of coupling, the relative velocity between the two components is localized around density depressions in quasi-one-dimensional systems. When the relative velocity is sufficiently small, the periodic pattern reduces to a periodic array of topological solitons as kinks of the relative phase. According to our variational and numerical analyses, the soliton solution is well characterized by the soliton width and density depression. We demonstrate the dependence of the depression and width on the Rabi frequency and the coupling constant of the intercomponent density-density interactions. The periodic pattern of the relative phase transforms continuously from a soliton array to a sinusoidal pattern as the period becomes smaller than the soliton width. These patterns become unstable when the localized relative velocity exceeds a critical value. The stability-phase diagram of this system is evaluated with a stability analysis of countersuperflow, by taking into account the finite-size effect owing to the density depression.

    Counter-rotating vortices in miscible two-component Bose-Einstein condensates, in which superflows counter-rotate between the two components around the overlapped vortex cores, are studied theoretically in a pancake-shaped potential. In a linear stability analysis with the Bogoliubov-de Gennes model, we show that counter-rotating vortices are dynamically unstable against splitting into multiple vortices. The instability shows characteristic behaviors as a result of counter-superflow instability, which causes relaxation of relative flows between the two components in binary condensates. The characteristic behaviors are completely different from those of multiquantum vortices in single-component Bose-Einstein condensates; the number of vortices generated by the instability can become larger than the initial winding number of the counter-rotating vortex. We also investigate the nonlinear dynamics of the instability by numerically solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equations. The nonlinear dynamics drastically changes when the winding number of counter-rotating vortices becomes larger, which lead to nucleation of vortex pairs outside of the vortex

    Nambu-Goldstone modes in immiscible two-component Bose-Einstein condensates are studied theoretically. In a uniform system, a flat domain wall is stabilized and then the translational invariance normal to the wall is spontaneously broken in addition to the breaking of two U(1) symmetries in the presence of two complex order parameters. We clarify the properties of the low-energy excitations and identify that there exist two Nambu-Goldstone modes: an in-phase phonon with a linear dispersion and a ripplon with a fractional dispersion. The signature of the characteristic dispersion can be verified in segregated condensates in a harmonic potential. © 2013 American Physical Society.

    In certain field theoretical models, composite solitons consisting of a domain wall and vortex lines attached to the wall have been referred to as 'D-brane solitons'. We show that similar composite solitons can be realized in phase-separated two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. We discuss the similarities and differences between topological solitons in the Abelian-Higgs model and those in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. On the basis of the formulation of gauge theory, we introduce the 'boojum charge' to characterize the D-brane soliton in Bose-Einstein condensates. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd.

    We study composite solitons, consisting of domain walls and vortex lines attaching to the walls in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. When the total density of the two components is homogeneous, the system can be mapped to the O(3) nonlinear sigma model for the pseudospin representing the two-component order parameter, and the analytical solutions of the composite solitons can be obtained. Based on the analytical solutions, we discuss the detailed structure of the composite solitons in two-component condensates by employing the generalized nonlinear s model, where all degrees of freedom of the original Gross-Pitaevskii theory are active. The domain wall pulled by a vortex is logarithmically bent as a membrane pulled by a pin. It bends more flexibly than the domain wall in the sigma model, because the density inhomogeneity results in a reduction of the domain wall tension from that in the sigma model limit. We find, however, that the curvature of the wall bending pulled by a vortex is still greater than that expected from the reduced tension due to only the density inhomogeneity. Finally, we study the composite soliton structure for actual experimental situations with trapped immiscible condensates under rotation, through numerical simulations of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations.

    We theoretically study the instability of helical shear flows, in which one fluid component flows along the vortex core of the other, in phase-separated two-component Bose-Einstein condensates at zero temperature. The helical shear flows are hydrodynamically classified into two regimes: (1) a helical vortex sheet, where the vorticity is localized on the cylindrical interface and the stability is described by an effective theory for ripple modes, and (2) a core-flow vortex with the vorticity distributed in the vicinity of the vortex core, where the instability phenomena are dominated only by the vortex-characteristic modes (Kelvin and varicose modes). The helical shear-flow instability shows remarkable competition among different types of instabilities in the crossover regime between the two regimes.

    We discuss the configurations of vortices in two-dimensional quantum turbulence, studying energy spectrum of superfluid velocity and correlation functions with the distance between two vortices. We apply the above method to quantum turbulence described by Gross-Pitaevskii equation in Bose-Einstein condensates. We make two-dimensional quantum turbulence from many dark solitons through the dynamical instability. A dark soliton is unstable and decays into vortices in two- and three-dimensional systems. In our work, we propose a method of discriminating between the uncorrelated turbulence and the correlated turbulence. We decompose the energy spectrum into two terms, namely the self-energy spectrum E (self) (k) made by individual vortices and the interactive energy spectrum E (int) (k) made by interference of two vortices. The uncorrelated turbulence is defined as turbulence with E (int) (k)a parts per thousand E-a (self) (k), while the correlated turbulence is turbulence where E (int) (k) is not much smaller than E (self) (k). Our simulations show that in the decay of dark solitons, the vortices created consist of correlated pairs of opposite circulation vortices, leading to the correlated turbulence.

    In brane cosmology, the Big Bang is hypothesized to occur by the annihilation of the brane-anti-brane pair in a collision, where the branes are three-dimensional objects in a higher-dimensional Universe. Spontaneous symmetry breaking accompanied by the formation of lower-dimensional topological defects, e.g. cosmic strings, is triggered by the so-called 'tachyon condensation', where the existence of tachyons is attributable to the instability of the brane-anti-brane system. Here, we discuss the closest analogue of the tachyon condensation in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. We consider annihilation of domain walls, namely branes, in strongly segregated two-component condensates, where one component is sandwiched by two domains of the other component. In this system, the process of the brane annihilation can be projected effectively as ferromagnetic ordering dynamics onto a two-dimensional space. Based on this correspondence, three-dimensional formation of vortices from a domain-wall annihilation is considered to be a kink formation due to spontaneous symmetry breaking in the two-dimensional space. We also discuss a mechanism to create a 'vorton' when the sandwiched component has a vortex string bridged between the branes. We hope that this study motivates experimental researches to realize this exotic phenomenon of spontaneous symmetry breaking in superfluid systems.

    We theoretically study the helical shear-flow instability in phase-separated two-component Bose-Einstein condensates by considering the case where one component forms a quantized vortex and the other component is localized in the vortex core with an uniform velocity. The analysis for a flat interface is applicable for a sufficiently large radius of the circular interface. On the other hand, when the interface radius is small, the analysis for flat interface is inapplicable and the instability is much affected by the outer vortex. The helical shear-flow instability is investigated with the interface wave model and the Bogoliubov-de Gennes model.

    We theoretically study the instability of vortices in pancake-shaped trapped binary Bose-Einstein condensates. We consider that a quantized vortex is at the center of each condensate and two condensates rotate in the opposite directions. The total circulation is zero in BECs having the overlapped vortices because there is relative rotation, which is the rotation of one component in relation to the rotation of the other, but no total rotation, which is the sum of the rotation in both components. We think that the zero-quantum vortices are unstable because this system is locally countersuperflow, two counterpropagating miscible superflows. In a uniform system, the countersuperflow is unstable when the relative velocity between the two condensates exceeds a critical value. We investigate the dynamics of the zero-quantum vortices by numerically solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equations. To understand the results of the numerical calculations, we apply the countersuperflow instability to our present system.

    We investigate the magnetic response of a dirty-normal-Fermi-liquid-spin-triplet-superfluid proximity system consisting of liquid He-3 and aerogel. In contrast to bulk superfluids, Pauli spin susceptibility in the proximity system exceeds its normal-state value locally around the interface. This enhanced Pauli paramagnetism originates from odd-frequency s-wave pairing arising due to spatial inhomogeneity.     Quantum hydrodynamics in superfluid helium and atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) has been recently one of the most important topics in low temperature physics. In these systems, a macroscopic wave function (order parameter) appears because of Bose-Einstein condensation, which creates quantized vortices. Turbulence consisting of quantized vortices is called quantum turbulence (QT). The study of quantized vortices and QT has increased in intensity for two reasons. The first is that recent studies of QT are considerably advanced over older studies, which were chiefly limited to thermal counterflow in He-4, which has no analog with classical traditional turbulence, whereas new studies on QT are focused on a comparison between QT and classical turbulence. The second reason is the realization of atomic BECs in 1995, for which modern optical techniques enable the direct control and visualization of the condensate and can even change the interaction; such direct control is impossible in other quantum condensates like superfluid helium and superconductors. Our group has made many important theoretical and numerical contributions to the field of quantum hydrodynamics of both superfluid helium and atomic BECs. In this article, we review some of the important topics in detail. The topics of quantum hydrodynamics are diverse, so we have not attempted to cover all these topics in this article. We also ensure that the scope of this article does not overlap with our recent review article (arXiv:1004.5458), "Quantized vortices in superfluid helium and atomic Bose-Einstein condensates", and other review articles.     We show theoretically that a domain-wall annihilation in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates causes tachyon condensation accompanied by spontaneous symmetry breaking in a two-dimensional subspace. Three-dimensional vortex formation from domain-wall annihilations is considered a kink formation in subspace. Numerical experiments reveal that the subspatial dynamics obey the dynamic scaling law of phase-ordering kinetics.     We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the drag force acting on a high porosity aerogel immersed in liquid He-3 and its effect on sound propagation. The drag force is characterized by the Knudsen number, which is defined as the ratio of the quasiparticle mean free path to the radius of an aerogel strand. Evidence of the Knudsen-hydrodynamic crossover is clearly demonstrated by a drastic change in the temperature dependence of ultrasound attenuation in 98% porosity aerogel. Our theoretical analysis shows that the frictional sound damping caused by the drag force is governed by distinct laws in the two regimes, providing excellent agreement with the experimental observation.

    We study a mechanism to create a vorton or three-dimensional skyrmion in phase-separated two-component BECs with the order parameters Psi(1) and Psi(2) of the two condensates. We consider a pair of a domain wall (brane) and an antidomain wall (antibrane) stretched by vortices (strings), where the Psi(2) component with a vortex winding is sandwiched by two domains of the Psi(1) component. The vortons appear when the domain wall pair annihilates. Experimentally, this can be realized by preparing the phase separation in the order Psi(1), Psi(2), and Psi(1) components, where the nodal plane of a dark soliton in Psi(1) component is filled with the Psi(2) component with vorticity. By selectively removing the filling Psi(2) component gradually with a resonant laser beam, the collision of the brane and antibrane can be made, creating vortons.

    We theoretically study the instability of countersuperflow, i.e., two counter-propagating miscible superflows, in uniform two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. When the relative velocity of the counterflow exceeds a critical value, the instability causes the nucleation and expansion of vortex rings. A lot of vortex reconnections are caused and lead to binary quantum turbulence, where both components become turbulent. Then we introduce the unique velocity in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates and investigate the probability distribution of the velocity in the binary quantum turbulence to obtain the probability distribution whose tail in the high-velocity region is considerably suppressed compared to single-component quantum turbulence.

    We theoretically propose a new method of making quantum turbulence from many dark solitons in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. We solve numerically the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We set initially many solitons so that they can form a square grid. A dark soliton is known to be stable in one-dimensional systems, but unstable in two- or three-dimensional systems and decay to vortices. Our simulation shows that these solitons decay to a lot of vortices which move around in the system and eventually lead to two-dimensional quantum turbulence. The probability distribution function of the superfluid velocity obeys a Gaussian distribution in the low-velocity region and a power-law distribution in the high-velocity region. The decay of the total number of vortices obeys a power-law for a relatively long period. This scenario may be experimentally realized through interference of Bose-Einstein condensates in a trap potential.

Expansion of the vortex rings drastically accelerates the momentum exchange, leading to a highly nonlinear regime caused by intervortex interaction and vortex reconnection between the rings. For a sufficiently large interaction between the two components, rapid expansion of the vortex rings causes isotropic turbulence and the global relative motion of the two condensates relaxes. The maximum vortex line density in the turbulence is proportional to the square of the relative velocity. © 2011 American Physical Society.

    We study the asymptotic interaction between two half-quantized vortices in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. When two vortices in different components are placed at distance 2R, the leading order of the force between them is found to be (ln R/xi - 1/2)/R-3,in contrast to 1/R between vortices placed in the same component. We derive it analytically using the Abrikosov ansatz and the profile functions of the vortices, confirmed numerically with the Gross-Pitaevskii model. We also find that the short-range cutoff of the intervortex potential linearly depends on the healing length.

    We theoretically study the nonlinear dynamics of the instability of counter-superflow in two miscible Bose-Einstein condensates. The condensates become unstable when the relative velocity exceeds a critical value, which is called counter-superflow instability. We reveal that the counter-superflow instability can lead to quantum turbulence by numerically solving the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. The modes amplified by the instability grow into solitons and decay into quantized vortices. Eventually, the vortices become tangled and quantum turbulence of two superfluids. We show that this process may occur in experiments by investigating the dynamics in a 2D trapped system.

    Dynamical instabilities at the interface between two Bose-Einstein condensates that are moving relative to each other are investigated using mean-field and Bogoliubov analyses. Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is dominant when the interface thickness is much smaller than the wavelength of the unstable interface mode, whereas the counter-superflow instability becomes dominant in the opposite case.     We theoretically study the development of quantum turbulence from two counter-propagating super-fluids of miscible Bose-Einstein condensates by numerically solving the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. When the relative velocity exceeds a critical value, the countersuperflow becomes unstable and quantized vortices are nucleated, which leads to isotropic quantum turbulence consisting of two superflows. It is shown that the binary turbulence can be realized experimentally in a trapped system.

    We theoretically study the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in phase-separated two-component Bose-Einstein condensates using the Gross-Pitaevskii and Bogoliubov-de Gennes models. A flat interface between the two condensates is shown to deform into sawtooth or Stokes-type waves, leading to the formation of singly quantized vortices on the peaks and troughs of the waves. This scenario of interface instability in quantum fluids is quite different from that in classical fluids.

    We theoretically study Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in phase-separated two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with shear flow at T=0. The stability of the shear flow state is investigated with the Gross-Pitaevskii and the Bogoliubov-de Gennes models, compared with a hydrodynamic model. The dynamics of the instability is revealed by numerically solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. In the nonlinear development, singly-quantized vortices are released from the interface between the two condensates.

    We study interfacial topological defects called boojums, a vortex ending or a connecting point of two kinds of vortex cores, in rotating two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. First, we show that the boojum exists at a vortex ending that connects to the interface of the strongly phase-separated condensates. Next, we study various boojums appearing between two phases characterized by different vortex structures, where the intercomponent s-wave scattering lengths are spatially varied. Using three-dimensional simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equations, we reveal the detailed structure of the boojums by visualizing its density distribution and effective superflow vorticity.

    We propose a different type of Landau instability in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates by a helically moving environment. In the presence of quantized vortices, the instability can cause spontaneous radiation and amplification of Kelvin waves. This study gives a microscopic understanding of the Donnelly-Glaberson instability which was known as the hydrodynamic instability in superfluid helium. The Donnelly-Glaberson instability can be a powerful tool for observing the dispersion relation of Kelvin waves, vortex reconnections, and quantum turbulence in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates.

    The Donnelly-Glaberson (DG) instability causes the amplification of Kelvin waves on vortex lines in superfluid 4He and 3He-B at finite temperatures due to mutual friction between vortex lines and the normal fluid component. In this letter, we theoretically show that the DG instability is possible in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates even at T = 0 K without the normal component. The DG instability in atomic condensates can lead to observe the dispersion relation of Kelvin waves, vortex reconnections and quantum turbulence. © 2009 IOP Publishing Ltd.

    We consider circular motion of a heavy object in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) at T = 0 K. Even if the linear velocity of the object is smaller than the Landau critical velocity, the object may radiate quasiparticles and thus experience the quantum friction. The radiation process is similar to Zel'dovich-Starobinsky (ZS) effect-the radiation by a rotating black hole. This analogy emerges when one introduces the effective acoustic metric for quasiparticles. In the rotating frame this metric has an ergosurface, which is similar to the ergosurface in the metric of a rotating black hole. In a finite size BEC, the quasiparticle creation takes place when the ergosurface is within the condensate and occurs via quantum tunneling from the object into the ergoregion. The dependence of the radiation rate on the position of the ergosurface is investigated.
