  • Started from a research on organizational knowledge creation in Japanese firms as a Doctoral student, Takaya Kawamura has been seeking for new forms of organization and its management that facilitate knowledge creation and the long-term sustainable development from an interdisciplinary perspective with emphases on sociology, psychology, philosophy, and critical action research. His recent research interest centres on the knowledge-based innovation management of pubic/not-for-profit organizations in the fields of healthcare, social welfare, arts and culture, education, regional activation, human rights protection, and environmental preservation, from the perspectives of organizational knowledge creation, community of practice, cultural-historical activity theory, new institutional theory, communitarian organization, professional/organizational ethics, and critical management studies.

    <p>Critical Management Studies (CMS) has been flourishing world-wide since the 1990s with the UK as its geographical centre. However, it is less known in Japanese academia on business administration probably due to the wide range of difficult theoretical research topics. This study conducts a systematic review of CMS literature to date to clarify what CMS is, what the term "critical" means, how it has emerged, and which field it has actively studied. We found that: 1) Originated in the research on Critical Theory, recent CMS is based on a diverse theoretical background, and adopts such various perspectives as race, environment, sexuality, and gender, and 2) major reviews on CMS share the view that CMS can be characterized by denaturalization, reflexivity, and (non) performative intent. We also found that in recent years there has been a growing research on "critical performativity", which has evolved from the debate on the (non) performative intent.</p>

    部下の職務動機づけについて看護部長が形成している持論(職務動機づけモデル)の解明に向け,調査票設計の基礎的資料を得る目的で,民間病院の看護部長4名を対象に半構成的面接を実施し,構成要素と成果を質的帰納的に分析した.その結果,構成要素では【欲求と価値の尊重】【目標管理】【職務の充実】【評価・報酬】【組織の歴史と革新】【仕事と生活の均衡1】【課題】が抽出された.成果では【人的資源】【サービス・クオリティ】【コスト】【象徴】が抽出された.この結果をワーク・モティベーションの統合モデルと比較したところ,構成要素には偏りがあることが示唆された.(著者抄録)

    This research shows how the introduction of a regional SNS by Yatsushiro municipal government in Japan has been transforming the activity system of regional public communication and thus facilitating endogenous and sustainable regional development since 2004. Using the activity theory as an analytical framework, it compares and analyzes the activity system of regional public communication mediated by a regional SNS with the one mediated by conventional media. Through the operation of the regional SNS, Yatsushiro municipal government has built a communication platform that promotes sharing of interests, information, and knowledge among diverse citizens.

    In the era of globalization, knowledge-creating organizations need to be managed as self-organizing networks of interactive, overlapping, and self-managing communities of practice. Because communities of practice bear the risks of closure, homogenization, and oppression, knowledge-creating organizations need to create an organizational environment that can prevent the malfunctions of communities of practice and can facilitate their dynamic evolutions. The activity theory provides a methodology of organizational knowledge creation for communities of practice in and around formal organizations. When practitioners define their activity systems, they can also identify "internal contradictions" as problems to be solved by creating new knowledge and practices, which lead to the transformation and development of the activity systems.

    This action research aims at facilitating managerial innvation at small enterprises in Japan through worksite health promotion. Employees and managers at small enterprises in Japan risk their health at worksite where working conditions and environment are not so favorable due to financial limitations. Health promotion at worksites has proved to be quite beneficial to financial performances of larger enterprises in U.S.It is therefore possible to improve financial performances of small enterprises in Japan through health promotion at worksites.     This paper proposes a theoretical framework to analyze how private nonprofit organizations (NPOs) simultaneously adapt to and remain autonomous against the institutional environment. Existing theories of organization-environment relationship fall short of explaining how NPOs take advantage of institutions. The proposed framework supposes that NPOs can acquire and maintain certain degree of autonomy by utilizing the conflicts between institutions around the organization as deterrent.

    米国病院組織研究では,病院組織は複数機能・目的をもつ高度に複雑な規範的ヒューマンサービス組織であり,高度な専門知識・技能・業務を独占し患者を統制する複数の専門職が,職種間・内で競争しつつ官僚制による統制と対抗する,「専門職官僚制」とされる.一般企業と比べ非競争的な患者市場とより競争的な労働市場,政府と職能団体による「弱い経営」のもとで,日本の病院組織は,専門経営者ではなく医療職が主導する専門職官僚制となり,組織の内部調整の時間・コストの増大,患者価値と労働者価値を向上させるイノベーションの抑制が懸念される.患者による価値決定が複雑・困難なサービスを提供する病院組織では,一般企業の経営技法の多くは有効性が限定されリスクも高い.イノベーションを促進するには,患者と病院職員が共同でより善い社会を探求・構築する,高度に複雑・創発的な組織が必要である.(著者抄録)

Stories of exploited/exhausted paramedics and care workers and of impeded improvements of patients/users' value unveil the resilience of modern institutional constellations featured by the enlightening and paternalistic dominance of physicians, who are still monopolizing and controlling the most privileged segment of the isolated market of health/social care labour. Prolonging the life of heavy-weight "gladiator" advanced medicine by supplementing with the leaner "auto-repair shop" acute care and the "total institution" of long-term community care is favoured by the risk-averting and austerity government, which is struggling to contain healthcare expenditures while preserving the power to control the national health insurance as the mainstay of zombie-like "welfare-state".
