Research subject summary

  • Moulding method, strength and damage behaviour until fracture of carbon fibre composites have been experimentally and analytically evaluated for their wider application in real primary structures and to establish optimized structural design. The originality can be found in my concept that aims better damage tolerance in carbon fibre composites structures by hybridizing and multi-material technique using metal films or polymer meshes inserted in the composite laminates.

    Multipoint measurements for resin flow during VaRTM process are carried out by using embedded fiber optic sensors to evaluate the effect of a resin distribution medium which is incorporated on a fiber preform as a surface layer on resin impregnation behavior. By simultaneously infusing epoxy resin into two glass fiber preforms with or without a distribution medium that are separated by a plastic film, resin amount impregnated through in-plane flow and out-of-plane flow via the distribution medium are compared. It has been indicated that resin amount impregnated through the out-of-plane flow via the distribution medium is found to be dominant especially for thinner fiber preform and be constant at each evaluated region of the resin flow. Numerical calculation for resin impregnation during the VaRTM process is also performed using coefficient of permeability both in in-plane and through-the-thickness direction in the fiber preform. The simulated resin amount impregnated through out-of-plane flow via the distribution medium is found to be constant during the impregnation process due to a constant slope angle of flow front, and be comparable with the experimental results.

  • Damage Behavior Evaluation of Thermoplastic Resin Based CF/PA6 Laminate Composites with Fiber Discontinuity Reviewed

    The tensile tests of the unidirectional CFRP laminate composites (CF/PA6) with fiber discontinuity were performed, and mechanical properties were obtained. The laminate stacking sequence of the specimens is [0<sub>24</sub>], and the specimens have fiber discontinuity of 6, 12 and 18 layers. And, the damage growth behaviors were investigated by microscopic observation and acoustic emission (AE) monitoring. Furthermore, the delamination onset stresses were predicted by the simple analysis model. As a result, the stress-strain curves showed nonlinear behavior, and nonlinear starting points became early with increase of the fiber discontinuity layers. It is found that the initial damage of the specimen was the crack between fiber discontinuity end/resin interface by microscopic observation and AE monitoring. And, the delamination between continuous/discontinuous ply around the resin occurred. After that, the resin at the fiber discontinuity was broken at the time of maximum applied stress, then the delamination grew extensively in the specimen, finally the specimens was broken. In addition, the delamination onset stresses were predicted by analysis model using energy release rate, and these stresses were almost agree with experimental values.

    Mechanical properties and damage onset stress in 24 or 25-ply unidirectional CFRP laminates that contain different thicknesses and gap lengths of fiber discontinuity are investigated by tensile testing and analytical model. Same damage behavior, as with previously reported, that interlaminar delamination between fiber continuous and discontinuous plies follows after crack initiation at the edge of the discontinuous fibers is observed even if thinner and longer gap of the fiber discontinuities are introduced. It has been shown that the laminates with long gap fiber discontinuity show higher stress of crack onset than that with short gap, and the crack onset stress decreases with the number of the discontinuous plies. A similar trend can be seen for the onset stress of the interlaminar delamination though no delamination has been observed in the short and long gap 1-ply and long gap 2-ply discontinuous laminates. The crack onset stress is evaluated by representing the energy release rate with crack initiation by using stress change in shear-lag model. Due to the fact that the relation between the number of discontinuous plies and crack onset stress can be predicted for both short and long gaps of fiber discontinuity by assuming a certain value of critical energy release rate, it is shown that the crack onset behavior is not affected by thickness and gap length of the fiber discontinuity. Another analytical model with an assumed critical energy release rate has successfully predicted the delamination onset stress regardless of sizes of fiber discontinuities by applying the exact thicknesses of continuous and discontinuous plies. By comparing the predicted delamination onset stress and fracture stress of the laminates, it is concluded that two and more fiber discontinuous plies can affect the overall damage behavior of the laminates.

    In fabricating complicated laminated composite structures by using prepregs, various kinds of fiber discontinuities such as ply drop-off and seams can be formed. Special care must be taken for the fiber discontinuity since they can induce stress concentration, and damage onset and growth originated from them may lead to catastrophic failure of the structure. The present study evaluates mechanical behaviour in unidirectional CFRP laminates that contain centered or dispersed fiber discontinuities fabricated by using interlaminar-toughened CFRP prepregs. Tensile testing has shown that higher onset stress of the interlaminar delamination between continuous and discontinuous plies can be achieved by interlaminar-toughened CFRP with centered fiber discontinuity compared to that for conventional CFRP prepregs. As for the specimen with dispersed fiber discontinuities, fracture stress keeps almost constant with more than 20 mm of interval of the dispersed fiber discontinuities. By applying the onset stress of the delamination that is experimentally obtained using centered discontinuity to an analytical model, critical energy release rate by the delamination onset is calculated. Then it is indicated that one can predict the fracture stress of the specimen with the dispersed fiber discontinuities with more than 20 mm interval of the discontinuities by using the critical energy release rate. This indicates that fracture of the laminate is dominated by the interlaminar delamination between discontinuous plies with more than 20 mm of interval.

    An experimental investigation of fabricating biodegradable composite pipes by filament winding (FW) method using ramie yarn as continuous fibre reinforcements is conducted. Though ramie fibres are discontinuous fibres in origin, ramie yarns can be handled as continuous fibre due to high aspect ratio of the fibre. Influence of use of the yarn on mechanical properties of the FW pipes is also evaluated. Axial and circumferential tensile tests are conducted for the FW pipes fabricated with various winding tensions. Results demonstrate that the winding tension affects not fracture load but only fibre volume fraction of the composites. Furthermore, properties of ramie yarn in FW pipes have been focused on. It has been shown that the elastic modulus of FW pipes using ramie yarns is lower than that of angle-plied laminates while mechanical properties of FW pipes and angle-plied laminates using glass or carbon fibre are comparable. From experimental evidences, it has been found that waviness of the ramie yarns caused by their own large diameter strongly affects the mechanical properties of the FW pipes, and that the ramie yarns do not exert their properties adequately in the FW pipes.

    In the present paper, effects of titanium skin layer on impact damages in GFRP core of Ti/GFRP laminates as Fibre-Metal Laminates under impact loadings were investigated. Low-velocity impact tests using a drop-weight tower were conducted on Ti/GFRP laminates with single titanium layer as a face sheet. In these tests, the titanium skin or GFRP layer were considered to be as an impact surface, and damages in the GFRP layer after the impact loading were observed in each case. From the experimental evidence, it was found that out-of-plane deformation and internal damages of GFRP layer were constrained by the titanium layer which was set at the opposite side of impact. Furthermore, four-point bending tests were conducted using the GFRP core derived from Ti/GFRP laminates after impact loadings. Experimental results showed that the specimens impacted from the GFRP layer side exhibited superior residual bending strength and bending stiffness compared to those impacted from the titanium layer side. Numerical analyses of impact damages in Ti/GFRP laminates using a finite element method were executed in order to evaluate damage development in the GFRP layer. The calculated damage state in the GFRP layer agreed well with the experimental results. As a consequence, it was revealed that the titanium layer at the opposite side of impact plays a major role in preventing damages in the GFRP core under low-velocity impact loading on Ti/GFRP laminates.

    In the present paper, the impact responses and overall damages of Fibre-Metal Laminates based on titanium alloys and glass fibre-reinforced polymers (Ti/GFRP) as Ti/FRP laminate system were evaluated. Low-velocity impact tests using a drop-weight tower were conducted for the cross-plied GFRP laminates and the Ti/GFRP laminates, and the impact responses during impact loading were obtained. Impact damages such as cracks in titanium layer and delamination of titanium-GFRP interface or matrix cracks and interlaminar delamination in GFRP layer were observed from the impact direction. From the experimental evidence, it was found that the Ti/GFRP laminates showed same impact damage modes as of other types of Fibre-Metal Laminates. Internal damages in the Ti/GFRP laminates were restrained by the reinforcing effect of titanium and adhesive layer compared to the cross-plied GFRP laminates. The Ti/GFRP laminates showed two patterns of the impact responses and damages with the threshold impact energy of about 4.8J. With higher impact energy than this threshold, single crack was presented in titanium layer at non-impacted side. The interlaminar delamination area in GFRP layer increased sharply due to the occurrence of this crack. Numerical analysis model that represent the impact behaviour of the Ti/GFRP laminates using finite element method was suggested based on the damage observations. The impact responses obtained by the dynamic analyses agreed well with the experimental results. The calculated area of interlaminar delamination in GFRP layer as a function of impact energy showed same behaviour as seen in the experiments. As a consequence, it was shown by the analysis as well that the drastic increase in the internal damage area of the Ti/GFRP laminates was induced by the fracture in outer titanium layer under the out-of-plane impact loading.

    In the present paper, the fatigue damage behaviour of fibre metal laminates based on a titanium alloy and glass fibre-reinforced polymers (Ti/GFRP) as Ti/FRP system was investigated in detail. Static tensile tests and tensile-tensile fatigue tests were conducted on open-hole specimens of these laminates that were assembled by bonding Ti alloy sheets and GFRP plates. The fatigue damage modes of the Ti/GFRP during the tests were observed. From the experimental evidence, the dominant damage modes were identified as cracks in the Ti layer, delaminations between the Ti layer and the adhesive layer, transverse cracks in the 90° layer and 0°/90° interlaminar delaminations in the GFRP layer near the open-hole. A finite element model that represents these fatigue damages in the laminates was developed based on the damage observations. The model predictions were compared to experimental results for the stiffness degradation. The model was able to capture the stiffness reduction trends for the Ti/GFRP. This result indicated that this model could be considered to be available to predict the mechanical properties of the Ti/GFRP. Then, the stress intensity factor at the crack tip in the Ti layer was also evaluated by using this finite element model. The calculated stress intensity factor at the crack tip of the Ti layer of the laminates kept almost constant with the crack growth. From these results, it was shown that the stress concentration at the crack tip was reduced by the GFRP layer, and then, the cracks in the Ti layer exhibited the stable growth by following the Paris's law relationship.
