    <p>The layer thickness dependence of Vickers hardness was investigated in Ni–Co–Cu/Cu multilayered films having layer thicknesses <i>h</i> ranging from 10 nm to 300 nm. The Ni–Co–Cu/Cu multilayered films were fabricated by electrodeposition. In the layer thickness range of <i>h</i> ≥ 75 nm, the hardness increased with decreasing layer thickness. Conversely, the hardness decreased with decreasing layer thickness at <i>h</i> ≤ 75 nm. At <i>h</i> = 10 nm, the hardness decreased to 97 HV, although the local maximum at <i>h</i> = 75 nm was 210 HV. In the X-ray diffraction (XRD) profiles around the fcc (111) peak, the 10 nm multilayered film revealed a single peak, while two peaks corresponding to the Ni–Co–Cu and Cu layers were detected in the other multilayered films. The low hardness of the 10 nm film can be understood from the absence of interface strengthening, which was deduced from the single XRD peak. For 20 nm ≤ <i>h</i> ≤ 75 nm, the two (111) peaks approached each other. The decreased hardness in this region could be related to sparse misfit dislocations, which can be estimated from the XRD peak angles.</p>

    <p>We fabricated Ni-P / Zn-Ni multilayered structures on a steel substrate using alternate electroplating with two electrolyte baths. We prepared two series of the multilayered structures to elucidate the effects of component layer thickness and annealing on hardness and wear resistance. In one series, the Ni-P and Zn-Ni layers had equal thicknesses of 200 nm, 500 nm, and 1000 nm, whereas the other series had constant 500 nm Ni-P layer thickness. Then, the electroplated films were annealed at 573 K for 2 hr. For all multilayered structures, the annealing increased the hardness and wear resistance because of Ni-P layer hardening. Among the multilayers having equal component thicknesses, the 500-nm layer thickness exhibited the highest hardness and wear resistance. In the annealed multilayers having constant 500 nm Ni-P thickness, the hardness and wear resistance increased concomitantly with decreasing Zn-Ni layer thickness. Our key finding is that the annealed multilayers consisting of 500-nm Ni-P and 100-nm Zn-Ni layers exhibited three times higher wear resistance than an annealed Ni-P film.</p>

    <p>The estimation of the slip deformation under the multiaxial stress state in the polycrystalline structure, which is caused by highly anisotropic deformation in microscopic scale of material, can provide an important information to understand the deformation mechanisms of crystalline material. In the present study, an evaluation method of slip deformation in the microscopic local region is proposed by coupling the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) Method and the crystalline plasticity theory. Microscopic strain field and slip deformation of the polycrystalline pure copper under uniaxial tension were evaluated using the proposed method. The nonuniform deformation in the crystal grain was firstly evaluated by DIC. Then, the slip deformation for all grains and all slip systems were estimated using the proposed method. Although the initial crystalline orientations were similar for different grains, the active slip systems for the grains did not coincide due to the interaction with surrounding grains. The multiple slip deformation occurred for almost crystal grain regardless of the degree of the total slip in the FCC metal.</p>

    <p>In order to predict the nonuniform deformation behavior of engineering materials, both the evaluation and modeling of the strain field are very important. Recently, accurate and contactless measurement of the strain field was performed using digital image correlation (DIC). Evaluation of the stress field is also required to model the nonuniform deformation behavior of the material. In this study, the stress and strain fields are evaluated by coupling the DIC and the finite element methods (FEM). The local strain can be decomposed into elastic and inelastic parts, based on the stress equilibrium around the displacement-measurement points. The local stress tensor can then be obtained by introducing the elastic strain components into a generalized Hooke's law. The large deformation theory, based on the updated Lagrange method, is also introduced to evaluate the local true stress and true strain tensors for large strain range. The stress and strain fields for pure copper specimens that had two different shapes, namely, specimens NU and U, were evaluated during tensile tests. The cross-section of specimen NU continually changes whereas it is constant for specimen U. Furthermore, two specimens with different crystal grain size were used to investigate the effect of the microscopic heterogeneity. The local true stress ̶true strain relationship spanned regions in the proximity of the global response, while the relationship for specimens NU and U were almost similar. The effect of the microscopic heterogeneity on the macroscopic nonuniform deformation was investigated using the evaluated stress and strain fields. In larger-grain specimens, the evaluated stress gradient was lower than that estimated using the strain gradient since the hardening rate spatially distributed owing to the microscopic heterogeneity.</p>

    The cyclic response of the SUS316L stainless steel with the nanostructure induced by profuse twinning during equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) at 423 K was investigated with the focus on the shape of the hysteresis loops and their evolution with cycling. The SUS316L steel with the nanostructured twins showed a very high stress amplitude if compared to their conventional counterparts. However, unlike the as-quenched specimens, the ECAPed SUS316L steel revealed considerable cyclic softening at plastic strain amplitudes above 2 &times; 10<sup>&minus;4</sup>. Besides, the ECAPed specimens showed characteristic stress asymmetry behavior during fatigue. At the initial stages of the fatigue tests, a tensile peak stress of the hysteresis loop was higher than a compressive one. Then, the tensile peak stresses gradually decreased with increasing cycles and finally became lower than the compressive peak stress under plastic strain amplitudes higher than 2 &times; 10<sup>&minus;4</sup>. Since no stress asymmetry was detected for the as-quenched sample, the observed stress asymmetry behavior was attributed to the specific asymmetric response of the directionally sheared microstructure created during ECAP.

    Mechanical properties and microstructure of Ni/Cu multilayered films have been investigated. The Ni/Cu multilayers were fabricated by electrodeposition technique. Thickness of individual Ni and Cu layers was set at h=20nm and 50nm, and total thickness of the multilayers was about 4μm. From electron diffraction patterns obtained by transmission electron microscope (TEM) observation, both the Ni and Cu layers were epitaxially grown during the electrodeposition. After being removed from a substrate, the Ni/Cu multilayered films were monotomcally strained to examine tensile strength. Prior to the tensile test, some multilayers were annealed. Ultimate tensile strength of the as-deposited multilayer of h=20nm was about 900MPa. After the annealing at 573K for 1 hour, the ultimate tensile strength of the 20nm multilayer increased up to 1GPa. However, the annealing at 773K significantly lowered tensile strength because disappearance of the multilayered microstructure. From the X-ray diffraction analysis of the as-deposited 20nm multilayer, the X-ray peaks from the Ni and Cu layers were unclear: both the layers had almost the same lattice constant. On the other hand, clear Ni and Cu peaks were detected at the annealed 20nm multilayer. It is thus probable that the increased strength in the annealed 20nm multilayer was caused by appearance of misfit dislocations which normally exist at an interface between the crystals having different lattice constants.

  • Orientation Dependence of High-Angle Grain Boundary Formation during Sliding Wear in Copper Single Crystals Reviewed

      Sliding wear tests were conducted on copper single crystals having (110) and (111) surface, and polycrystalline copper. Evolution of high-angle grain boundaries during the sliding wear was investigated by the electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) technique. The high-angle grain boundaries, which were formed in the vicinity of the worn surface, could be classified into two kinds from their morphology: one is parallel to the worn surface (Type A high-angle boundary) and the other is a grain boundary surrounding an equiaxed fine grain (Type B high-angle boundary). At Type A high-angle boundaries, a rotational axis between adjoining grains was almost parallel to <i>z</i>-axis which is defined as the direction perpendicular to both wear direction and worn surface normal. Grain boundary character distribution of Type A boundaries was sensitive to crystallographic orientation of the <i>z</i>-axis. When the <i>z</i>-axis was <110>, orientation relationship of Σ33a had high frequency. On the other hand, high Σ31a frequency was obtained at the sliding wear occurring under <111> <i>z</i>-axis condition. It is concluded that the evolution of Type A boundaries was caused by lattice rotation induced by sliding wear. For Type B high-angle boundaries, fractions of low-Σ coincident site lattice (CSL) boundaries were high, and the frequency distribution of CSL boundaries was almost independent of wear direction and worn surface orientation. Unlike Type A boundaries, rotational axes at Type B boundaries showed no preferred orientation. These crystallographic features suggest that recrystallization is the most plausible origin for Type B boundary evolution. Consequently, the high-angle boundaries were produced probably by two different processes during sliding wear.<br>

      A sliding wear test was conducted on a copper single crystal having (001) surface. Formation of fine grains was recognized locally near the worn surface. To find a criterion for generation of low-angle boundaries during the sliding wear, lattice rotation of the matrix and misorientation between adjoining points were measured using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis. Particularly, we paid attention to the low-angle boundaries that were distant from the worn surface. Beneath the fine-grained area, orientation of the matrix continuously changed along the direction of depth. The continuous lattice rotation was understood from a concept of geometrically necessary (GN) dislocations whose density is proportional to a lattice rotation gradient ∂φ/∂<i>x</i>. Increase in the lattice rotation gradient that was measured from the EBSD analysis was recognized near the worn surface. However, at the subsurface layer where low-angle boundaries were generated, the lattice rotation gradient was no longer a function of depth, and was smaller than that of the region where the continuous lattice rotation occurred. Accordingly, the generation of the low-angle boundary could be caused by rearrangement of the dislocations that was induced by the sliding wear.<br>

    <p>Severe plastic deformation such as the equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) has been received attention in the field of grain refinement strengthening. There are several studies on low-cycle fatigue of ECAPed materials having fcc and bcc lattice structures, but low-cycle fatigue behavior has not been understood in an ECAPed materials having a hcp lattice structure yet. In the present study, a hot-extruded ZK60A magnesium alloy was processed by the ECAP for 1 to 8 passes at a die temperature of 200°C. Microstructure, tensile strength, and low cycle fatigue property of the ECAPed ZK60A alloy were investigated. The low-cycle fatigue test were conducted under a constant plastic strain amplitude of <i>ε</i><sub>pl</sub>=10<sup>-3</sup>. In tensile deformation tests, the ECAPed samples processed for 1 and 2 passes revealed high tensile strengths. However, after 4 and 8 ECAP passes, tensile strengths decreased in comparison with the 1 and 2 pass samples. In low-cycle fatigue tests, the initial stress amplitudes of ECAPed samples were certainly higher than that of the as-extruded sample. Among the ECAPed samples, the 2-pass sample showed the highest intial stress amplitude. The initial stress amplitudes of the other ECAPed sample were almost equal, even though the 1-pass sample showed a higher tensile strength. Until 2000 cycles, all the ECAPed samples exhibited no significant cyclic softening behavior, while rapid softening has been observed in ECAPed samples including copper and strainless steel. The absence of the cyclic softening seems to be of advantage in an application for engineering purpose. In the 4- and 8-pass samples, stress amplitudes decreased gradually with increasing cycles. The fatigue life cycle of the 1-pass sample was less than 2000 cycles, which was shorter than the as-exruded sample. However, for the 4- and 8-pass samles, the fatigue life cycles were extended up to 6000 cycles.</p>

    <p>To investigate an interaction between macroscopic and microscopic nonuniform deformation of polycrystalline pure copper, uniaxial tensile tests using various specimens having different curvature and different crystal grain size were performed. Specimens were annealed by different to vary grain size, and radius of curvature was changed in gage section to induce various stress gradient. To evaluate heterogeneous strain field in the surface of specimen, digital image correlation method was used in this study. The maximum stress for each specimen under uniaxial tension was also evaluated. Similar to Hall-Petch relation, the maximum stress increases with decreasing grain size. The curvature of specimen also affects to the maximum stress. The macroscopic nonuniform deformation enlarges the microscopic nonuniform deformation, and it increases the hardening due to GND. This trend was found for each annealing temperature. In fine grain specimen, strain distribution depends on specimen shape. In contrast, if grain size is large, order of microscopic heterogeneity approaches order of macroscopic nonuniform deformation. In such case, strain distribution depends on not only specimen configuration, but also grain distribution.</p>

    <p>Evaluation of microscopic deformation behavior of polycrystalline metals is very important to predict the mechanical property of the material. In this study, a development of the microscopic deformation field of polycrystalline pure copper is evaluated by digital image correlation method. Then, slip deformation on each slip system is estimated from the in-plane components of strain tensor based on the concept of the crystalline plasticity theory. Experimental results clarified that microscopic nonuniform deformation in the crystalline grain were evaluated, and that slip deformation occurred on specific slip systems.</p>

    <p>The semi-crystalline polymer has complex hierarchical structure. The material composes a two-phase laminar composite structure consisting of the lamella is about several ten nm. During crystallization process, the lamella grows radially and makes a spherical shape structure called as spherulite. The distribution and size of spherulite are closely related to the mechanical property of the semi-crystalline polymer. Therefore, an evaluation of the deformation behavior of the spherulite-distributed microscopic structure is important to know the mechanical property of the material. In this study, effect of thermal history on the crystallization process on the microscopic structure and inelastic deformation behavior is evaluated. Uniaxial tensile tests were performed using PP films and plates with different spheulite structures under constant displacement rate. Distribution of spherulite and relationship between stress and strain were considerably changed by thermal history.</p>
