<p>Ultrasonic wave is applied to damage evaluation of GFRP laminate degraded by hot water from one surface. GFRP vessels have been used for storage of both acid solution and alkaline solution because of their excellent corrosion resistance. In these days, integrity evaluation of GFRP vessels has attracted much attention as the number of aged vessels increases. Although degradation proceeds gradually from the inner surface of vessels, sensors can only be attached on the outer surface. Then the through-thickness method for damage evaluation is required. In this research, GFRP plates are degraded by hot water from one surface, and through-thickness ultrasonic inspection is conducted to reveal the dependence of ultrasonic characteristics on damage state of the plates. Beside wave attenuation and velocity, characteristics of reflected waveforms from the degraded surface are analyzed. It is found that the envelope of echo from the degraded surface reflects damage propagation in the thickness direction, and it can be used as damage index of GFRP vessels.</p>

A new technique using Lamb wave is proposed to detect uncured region in GFRP laminates nondestructively. Polymer based composites play an increasingly important role in the field of civil engineering in recent years. For example, laminated sheets consisting of thermoplastic layer, organic fabric sheets and SMC (sheet molding compound) are used to rehabilitate aged sewerage pipes. The cylindrical laminate is inserted in the pipe, and is inflated and cured by steam blowing to create close-fit pipe. This CIPP (cured in place pipe) is one of several trenchless rehabilitation methods to repair aged pipes. In this study, ultrasonic Lamb wave is applied to the detection of uncured region in a laminated composite plate. Oblique incidence method in which ultrasonic waves are launched by the transducer inclined at a selected angle is applied to excite specific mode of Lamb waves in the laminate. Wheel type probes are used to improve inspection efficiency. Beside wave attenuation, AU parameters which are derived from power spectrum of a broadband signal are introduced. It is found that application of AU parameters leads to the improvement of the detectability of uncured region.

Electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) is applied to resin cure monitoring in manufacturing process of fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) by resin transfer molding (RTM) method. The RTM is suitable for fabrication of FRP products of three-dimensional complex shape. In order to reduce the cost by minimizing the cycle time, cure monitoring is required. Authors have already ensured that the EMAT can detect the resin flow front in RTM process by monitoring the change in reflection coefficient at mold surface due to resin impregnation. The reflection factor is also affected by the resin viscosity. In this study, during the curing process, we measure the attenuation coefficient of standing wave introduced in the mold. Results are compared with impedance of dielectric sensor located inside the mold, showing that the degree of cure can be evaluated by EMAT at outer surface of the mold.

Numerical model for simulation of magnetoelastic interactions in polycrystalline ferromagnets is proposed. In ferromagnetic materials, individual grain is divided into many magnetic domains. In the demagnetized state, domains magnetized parallel to one of the easy axes are randomly distributed. When magnetic field or stress is applied, domain walls move and rotation magnetization starts to occur. In this study, change in the total volume of domains of each direction is calculated for every grain. Volume exchange between domains is assumed to be proportional to the difference of internal energy. The constant of proportionality is decided from the magnetization curve. Rotation magnetization is also introduced to the simulation. Magnetization direction of the most preferable domains is rotated so as to minimize the sum of internal energy. Results are compared with the experimental results, showing that stress dependence of magnetic properties can be predicted and that the effect of heat treatment can be explained by only two parameters.

Electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs) are applied to detection of resin flow front in manufacturing process of fiber reinforced plastics by resin transfer molding (RTM) method. In order to improve the quality of RTM products, real-time monitoring of resin flow is required. Dielectric sensors have been used for such purposes, although they should be embedded in the products. In this study, we propose to detect the resin flow front by measuring the amplitude of multiple echoes in the mold. Reflection coefficient of ultrasonic wave depends on the boundary condition. During the passage of flow front across the measuring area, echo amplitude decreases. Multi-point EMAT, which dispenses with the sensor scan, is also developed. It was ensured that the resin flow front passage can be detected as stepdown of echo amplitude using the EMAT set on the outer surface of the mold.

Magnetostriction curves of nickel are measured under various levels of applied stress. Several techniques using magnetic properties have been developed for the nondestructive stress measurement in ferromagnetic materials. We have already revealed that the maximum value and the knee point value of the magnetostriction curves can be used for the nondestructive stress evaluation in steel and Invar alloy, respectively. The minimum value of the magnetostriction normal to the magnetization direction was also proved to be useful. Accurate measurement of magnetic field was not required in measuring such characteristic values. In this study, in order to examine the possibility of stress measurement using magnetostriction, we measure the stress dependence of the magnetostriction of nickel in both directions parallel and normal to the magnetic field. The results can be explained considering the domain realignment by the stress. It is found that the saturation values in these magnetostriction curves can be applied to the nondestructive stress evaluation.

High-order Lamb waves of symmetric mode are applied to flaw detection in steel plates. In inspection of thin plates, Lamb wave of the lowest symmetric mode is preferable, because effect of the velocity dispersion, which distorts the waveform, is small in the low frequency region. However, for thick plates, the frequency should be lowered and the wavelength becomes large. Then, the flaw detectability is reduced. In this study, we suggest to make use of high-order Lamb wave at frequency of its maximum group velocity in order to avoid the interference with the other modes. Electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs), each of which consists of an electromagnet and a meander line coil, are designed for three modes of Lamb wave in 6mm-thick steel plate, using theoretically obtained dispersion curves. Optimum magnetic field strength is investigated, ensuring that the wave generation and detection are based on the magnetostriction. Dispersion curves are measured by sweeping the excitation frequency, which reveals the optimum frequency. Echoes from drilled holes are detected to discuss the flaw detectability of each mode.

     More details

    Type of research exchange:共同研究

    Application fields / methods etc:

    Detail description:

     More details

    Type of research exchange:共同研究

    Application fields / methods etc:

Detail description:
