Research subject summary

  • 固体の電気的性質を研究しています. 1  熱を直接電気に変換する熱電材料という物質の研究をしています.優秀な熱電材料の発見を目指して,結晶成長や,その評価のための電気抵抗・熱起電力・熱伝導度の測定,実験結果を理解するための数値計算などを行っています.長さ1mm程度の小さい試料の熱伝導度を測定するのは大変難しく,そのための装置開発に力を入れています. 2 有機伝導体など電気を流す新しい物質の,低温・高圧・高磁場中での興味深い振る舞いを研究しています.例えば,室温で金属のように電気をよく流す物質でも,液体ヘリウムを使って極低温まで冷やすと,絶縁体に相転移してしまうことがあります.この絶縁体の状態は,1万気圧などの高圧下では再び金属のように電気を流すようになりますが,さらに高磁場中では再び絶縁体になったりします.このような新規な相転移や電気物性を発見・理解するための研究を行っています.

    The magnetoresistance of quasi-1D two-chain organic conductor HMTSF-TCNQ (hexamethylenetetraselenafulvalene-tetracyanoquinodimethane), which shows charge density wave transition at ambient pressure, was studied under pressure up to 27 T and 31 T, in two high field facilities. We found a kink structure in the magnetoresistance reminiscent of field-induced spin density wave at an intermediate pressure of 1.5 GPa between 0 and 2 GPa. We speculate that these are successive quantum phases induced by magnetic field.

    Electronic properties of the $\pi$–d system (EDT-DSDTFVSDS)2FeBr4 are investigated under high pressure up to 6.5 GPa, where EDT-DSDTFVSDS = ethylenedithiodiselenadithiafulvalenothioquinone-1,3-diselenolemethide. In order to extract the $\pi$–d interaction, the nonmagnetic anion analogue salt (EDT-DSDTFVSDS)2GaBr4 is also investigated for comparison. Both salts show metallic electrical resistivity at high temperature, but exhibit insulating behaviors in two pressure regions, in the low-pressure region, i.e., [$P<3.5$ GPa (2.0 GPa)] for the FeBr4 (GaBr4) salts, as well as in the high-pressure region, i.e., ($P>3.0$ GPa) for both salts. Below 3.5 GPa, the low-pressure insulating state of the FeBr4 salt is enhanced by the $\pi$–d interaction. Whereas, the high-pressure insulating state of the FeBr4 salt is not enhanced above 3.5 GPa. On the other hand, the $\pi$–d interaction may affect the nonmetallic behavior of the resistance above 200 K in the FeBr4 salt owing to the scattering of $\pi$ electrons from thermally fluctuating d spins.

    Electronic properties of the $\pi$–d system $\beta$-(EDT-DSDTFVSDS)2FeBr4 are investigated, where EDT-DSDTFVSDS = ethylenedithiodiselenadithiafulvalenothioquinone-1,3-diselenolemethide. Clear contrast between the FeBr4 salt and the nonmagnetic anion analogue salt, $\beta$-(EDT-DSDTFVSDS)2GaBr4, was observed in the electrical resistance and magnetoresistance (MR). The FeBr4 salt exhibits a giant negative MR of 85% at 0.7 K and 14 T. Furthermore, MR of the FeBr4 salt has a deep and sharp dip anomaly associated with the spin flop of the d spin at around 1.8 T below Néel temperature $T_{\text{Nd}} = 3.3$ K. A model calculation, based on the assumption that antiferromagnetic arrangement of the d spins enhances an insulating state, qualitatively reproduced the experimental result. These results demonstrate the strong $\pi$–d interaction in the FeBr4 salt. Further, it is remarkable that in the higher angle of magnetic field from the easy axis, two anomalies associated with spin flop were observed. This behavior is neither explained by the conventional three-dimensional Ising nor XY models. The magnetic susceptibility of the FeBr4 salt obeys the Curie–Weiss law without a peak, which is characteristic of the usual low-dimensional antiferromagnet at higher temperature than Néel temperature.

    The solidification pressure of Daphne 7373, which is widely used as a pressure medium in high pressure studies, was examined at room temperature. Using a new generation clamp-type pressure cell, we found that Daphne 7373 solidifies at 2.2 GPa at room temperature. This is exactly on the natural extrapolation of the melting curve obtained at lower pressures and temperatures in our previous report. The solidification pressure of Daphne 7373 is twice as high as that of another well-known medium Fluorinert 77/70 (0.9 GPa). This allows us to hold hydrostatic pressure even in the newly developed BeCu–NiCrAl clamp-type pressure cell, which exceeds the limit of 1.5 GPa generated by a conventional BeCu cell.

    The temperature–pressure ($T$–$P$) phase diagram of the reduced $\pi$-donor system (MeDH-TTP)2AsF6 is studied using resistivity measurement, where MeDH-TTP stands for 2-methyl-5-(1,3-dithiolan-2-yliden)-1,3,4,6-tetrathiapentalene. The insulating phase is suppressed completely beyond $P_{\text{c}} = 2.4$ GPa. Above $P_{\text{c}}$, we find two distinct metallic states that are regarded as the Fermi liquid (FL) state at lower temperatures and the "bad metal" at higher temperatures. Around $P_{\text{c}}$, remarkable enhancements in the residual resistivity $\rho_{0}$ as well as in the $T^{2}$-term coefficient $A$ associated with FL behavior are found. We discuss the origin of the insulating phase and the possible quantum critical point at $P_{\text{c}}$ in (MeDH-TTP)2AsF6.

    High-pressure studies on organic conductors and superconductors are reviewed. It is stressed that almost all the organic conductors are studied by means of high pressures, but the role or meaning of pressure effect has been dependent on the salts and physics of interests. In organic molecular crystals, many intriguing physical phenomena such as the appearance of charge- and spin-density-waves, superconductivity, Mott insulator and charge ordering have been found. The application of hydrostatic and uniaxial pressures plays an essential role for understanding the nature of these electronic states, for guiding the material design, and for creating the unexpected quantum states as well as high-<TEX>$T_{\text{c}}$</TEX>superconductivities. This review includes the history, pressure techniques, and works under conventional pressures of up to 1.5 GPa, ultra-high pressures up to 10 GPa as well as uniaxial pressure, but the topics which are dealt with in this same special issue are not covered.

    Recently, a conductive coordination compound [Cu(TANC)](F)0.5 with new radical frameworks was synthesized, where TANC stands for 5,6,11,12-tetraazanaphacene. We have measured the electrical resistivity of [Cu(TANC)](F)0.5 under high pressures up to 8.0 GPa. At ambient pressure, the temperature dependence of the resistivity shows semiconducting behavior described by a variable range hopping conduction, <TEX>$\rho(T) \sim \exp(T_{0}/T)^{\eta}$</TEX>. The value of <TEX>$T_{0}$</TEX>increases with increasing pressure up to 6.5 GPa, beyond which it decreases abruptly. The pressure dependence of <TEX>$T_{0}$</TEX>is discussed in terms of the increase of the pureness of one-dimensionality and the strength of the random potential due to disordered F- ions.

    Quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) organic conductors with simple open Fermi surfaces have provided novel angular dependent magnetoresistance oscillation (AMRO) phenomena for the last two decades. Both semiclassical and quantum mechanical theories well explain these phenomena, but detailed study of the field dependence probably gives a crucial test. Recently it was proposed that a kind of AMRO that is known as "Lee-Naughton oscillations (LNO)" observed for (TMTSF)(2)ClO4 is a result of dimensional crossover of electronic system from one-to two-dimension on changing the field orientation. We have studied the field dependence of the magnetoresistance of Q1D superconductors (TMTSF)(2)ClO4 and (DMET)(2)I-3 by using a 46-T pulsed magnetic field system and found the B-1/2-behavior at minima of LNO.

    The field and angle dependence of magnetoresistance of (TMTSF)(2)ClO4 was studied by a pulsed magnetic field system up to 40 T. The third angular effect of this quasi-one-dimensional metal was clearly observed as well as Lee-Naughton oscillations with small amplitude for ab-plane rotation of the magnetic field. Saturating behavior of the field dependence of the magrietoresistance at a local minimum of the angular dependence contrasts with non-saturation (or divergence) at general field orientations to the crystal. This unconventional behavior may be explained by crossover of electronic system from one-to two-dimensional suggested by recent theories based on quantum mechanics.

    To understand the interplay between transport and magnetic properties, quasi-two-dimensional (Q2D) organic conductor tau-(EDO-S,S-DMEDT-TTF)(2) (AuCl2)(1+y) was studied by measurements of electric resistivity (rho(a), rho(c)), magnetoresistance (MR), susceptibility (Z) and specific heat (C) in the temperature region between 1 K and 300 K. In spite of the fact that the drastic changes were observed in rho(a), rho(c), MR and chi at T-c = 20 K, no anomaly was seen in C. The concentration of spins estimated from M-H curve is about 360 ppm, which is difficult to detect anomaly in C. These data suggest that the number of spins is very small in the ground state like spin-glass system.

    We report the magnetoresistance (MR) in 2D-organic conductor, beta"-(EDO-TTFVO)(2)FeCl4. We found an anomaly at 8T in MR, which is field-angle-independent. We speculate that this behavior is associated with from antiferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition, occurring at the same magnitude of magnetic field irrespective of field direction. To realize this situation, comparable magnitude of J(pi d) and J(d) is required, which is rather rare the case. The isotropic nature in the magnetic transition is remarkable in the anisotropic organic conductors.

    The effect of thermal treatment on the transport properties is studied for a two-dimensional organic conductor <TEX>$\tau$</TEX>-(EDO-S,S-DMEDT-TTF)2(AuBr2)1+y, (<TEX>$y \le 0.875$</TEX>). The temperature dependence of the electric resistivity below room temperature was found to be changed from metallic down to low temperature to semiconducting by heating up to 420\,K. One of the two frequencies of Shubnikov--de Haas oscillations are found to be different between the non-heated and heated parts from a single crystal, while no evidence of structural change in X-ray photograph was observed. The present result clearly shows that nominal valence or band filling can be controlled by simple thermal treatment for the quasi-two-dimensional organic metal. The mechanism of the change in the band filling is discussed in terms of anion decomposition.

    With the interest of ground state near CDW at low temperature, the electronic properties under high pressure, at low temperature and in high magnetic field of HMTSF-TCNQ are examined. Up to 8 GPa, the overall resistivity-temperature behaviour are unchanged, i.e. broad resistance minimum around 100-150 K and subtle resistance decrease below around 30 K. The pressure insensitive nature is not consistent with previous data.. At 1.5 -1.6 GPa, but not at P = 0, a novel hysteretic behaviour and probable quantum oscillations in magnetoresistance are found in a clear form.
