    The aim of this study is to reframe the influence of Russian modern art on Japanese modern art in the 1920s, in the social and political context before the start of Soviet totalitarianism and Japanese fascism. It is said that Western European art had a great impact on Japanese modern art, because many Japanese artists studied fine art in France or Germany. But Russian art became an alternative model of a new art tendency for the younger and more radical Japanese artists after the October Revolution in 1917. Considering the recent previous studies, this research demonstrates how the most radical wing of Japanese modern artists and critics were influenced by and attracted to Russian modern art, and consequently, they came to support socialist realism as a style of art.
