Research subject summary

  • 生物の集団は、それを取り巻く環境の中で特定の空間構造を作り出す。近年生態学において、生物集団の空間構造の形成過程や、空間構造が個体群維持機構や多種共存機構に与える影響について調べる研究が続けられている。このような研究は植物生態学においては、主に雌雄同株植物について行われてきた。  ところで、植物は種によって多様な性表現を持つ。その中で雌雄異株の植物は個体レベルで雌雄の機能を分業している。植物にとって、種子段階は生活史の中で唯一分散可能な重要な段階だが、雌雄異株植物の場合、雄個体は種子の供給源とはなり得ず、種個体群の空間構造に重大な影響が出ると考えられる。したがって植物集団の動態を解析するには、雌雄の区別が当然必要である。本研究は、植物集団の動態研究に雌雄異株性を組み込む試みであり、植物の雌雄異株性の評価に新しい評価を与えられることを期待している。

    <p>Researches on <i>Taraxacum officinale</i>, an invasive plant in Japan, have been conducted in urban areas and their suburbs where human activities are high. However, it has been recently reported that <i>T. officinale</i> has invaded alpine areas in Japan, where the influence of humans was minimal. In this study, we investigated the invasion of <i>T. officinale</i> and hybrids between the alien and the Japanese native one in three alpine regions: Mt. Ibuki (1,377 m), Mt. Hakusan (2,702 m) and the Ushirotateyama Mountain Range (2,932 m). In the three alpine regions, the alien and hybrid dandelions were found growing in places under anthropogenic disturbance, such as parking lots and gondola stops. Approximately half of the individuals judged to the alien dandelions based on their morphology were hybrid dandelions, and the proportion of hybrids tended to rise with increasing the altitude. In Mt. Ibuki and Mt. Hakusan, the clonal diversity of the invasive dandelions was low, and a limited number of clones tended to increase the population. On the other hand, the diversity of clones in the Ushirotateyama Mountain Range was high, suggesting that clones of invasive dandelions with various genotypes have established.</p>

    Although <i>Osmunda japonica </i>and <i>Plenasium banksiifolium </i>often occur sympatrically in southern Kyushu, Japan, no natural hybrids have been reported between them. In this study, hybrids of <i>O. japonica </i>and <i>P. banksiifolium </i>were artificially generated. Using the morphological characteristics of these artificially produced hybrids as a key, possible natural hybrids alongside the parent species were discovered in Kaeda Valley in Miyazaki Prefecture, southern Kyushu. However, all of the natural hybrids were juvenile sporophytes, and no sexually mature natural hybrids have yet been discovered. The finding suggests that natural hybrids between <i>O. japonica </i>and <i>P. banksiifolium </i>are ephemeral, which may partly explain the lack of reports of such hybrids to date.

    <p>Geographical variation in soil bacterial community structure in 26 tropical forests in Southeast Asia (Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore) and two temperate forests in Japan was investigated to elucidate the environmental factors and mechanisms that influence biogeography of soil bacterial diversity and composition. Despite substantial environmental differences, bacterial phyla were represented in similar proportions, with Acidobacteria and Proteobacteria the dominant phyla in all forests except one mangrove forest in Sarawak, although highly significant heterogeneity in frequency of individual phyla was detected among forests. In contrast, species diversity (α-diversity) differed to a much greater extent, being nearly six-fold higher in the mangrove forest (Chao1 index = 6,862) than in forests in Singapore and Sarawak (~1,250). In addition, natural mixed dipterocarp forests had lower species diversity than acacia and oil palm plantations, indicating that aboveground tree composition does not influence soil bacterial diversity. Shannon and Chao1 indices were correlated positively, implying that skewed operational taxonomic unit (OTU) distribution was associated with the abundance of overall and rare (singleton) OTUs. No OTUs were represented in all 28 forests, and forest-specific OTUs accounted for over 70% of all detected OTUs. Forests that were geographically adjacent and/or of the same forest type had similar bacterial species composition, and a positive correlation was detected between species divergence (β-diversity) and direct distance between forests. Both α- and β-diversities were correlated with soil pH. These results suggest that soil bacterial communities in different forests evolve largely independently of each other and that soil bacterial communities adapt to their local environment, modulated by bacterial dispersal (distance effect) and forest type. Therefore, we conclude that the biogeography of soil bacteria communities described here is non-random, reflecting the influences of contemporary environmental factors and evolutionary history.</p>

    Genetic diversity is important for all levels of biodiversity because the extents and patterns of genetic diversity influence population viability and adaptation in changing environments, the generation of new species, and the function of ecosystems as well. DNA molecular markers are also widely used for rapid identification of species and for investigating spatial and temporal patterns of gene flow, which are important for understanding the population stability. Here we synthesize knowledge from evolutionary and population genetic studies of tropical forest trees, especially for dipterocarp species in Southeast Asia, and give a brief introduction of the related theoretical population genetic background. First we focus on DNA divergence between species, and how the comprehensive molecular phylogeny of the dipterocarp species is useful. Second we highlight the research studying the extents and the geographic distributions of genetic variations within species, and then discuss how to elucidate the biogeographic history of Sundaland based on the pattern of DNA variations. Future opportunities using genetic data in tropical forestry and ecology are discussed.

    We used microsatellite DNA analysis to assess the gene flow through pollination and the fine-scale spatial genetic structure (FSGS) of dipterocarp tree species in a tropical rain forest in Borneo. The results suggest that the intensity of FSGS of dipterocarp populations is dependent on tree density and pollination system. We found notable FSGS in beetle-pollinated tree populations but not in bee-pollinated tree populations. Both high and low density beetle-pollinated species had clear FSGS, in which genotypes of nearby trees were similar but those of distant trees were genetically different from each other. FSGS was especially strong for beetle-pollinated species with low tree density. These results are particularly important because they suggest that the effects of forest fragmentation by logging might be largely dependent on individual tree species. Logging is likely to form fragmented populations consisting of patches of genetically related trees. Thus, forest fragmentation may intensify FSGS, especially for tree species that have a pollination system with low mobility, such as beetle-pollinated trees. Increasing FSGS of tree populations may lead to loss of genetic diversity, high frequency of inbreeding and reduction of regeneration by inbreeding depression. Even for species pollinated by highly mobile bees, such negative effects on regeneration might be unavoidable under logging fragmentation.

    奈良県御蓋山における木本種の幹肥大成長の季節パターンを単純ロジスチック曲線に当てはめ,種ごとに成長パラメーターを推定した.成長パターンは,生活形(落葉広葉樹,常緑広葉樹,常緑針葉樹)によりカテゴリー分けできた.落葉広葉樹は短期間に速く成長した.これは葉の寿命が短いことと光合成速度が高いことと関係するものと考えられた.これに対し,針葉樹は長期間にわたってゆっくりと成長した.常緑広葉樹は,落葉広葉樹と針葉樹の中間的な傾向を示した.針葉樹と常緑広葉樹は,低い光合成速度を長い成長期間で補い,十分な成長量を維持していると考えられた.針葉樹と常緑広葉樹の中では,高緯度地域まで分布する種ほど春の成長開始時期が早かったが,落葉広葉樹では,関係は見られなかった.一年中葉をつけている常緑樹は,春に環境条件が整うと,ただちに光合成を開始できることが関係しているものと思われる.針葉樹の中では早い時期に成長を開始する種ほど,一方,落葉広葉樹の中では遅い時期まで成長を続ける種ほど,成長期間が長かったが,常緑広葉樹では,関係は見られなかった.落葉樹は春に新葉を生産するためにコストを要するため,十分成長するためには,遅い時期まで成長を続けることが必要だと考えられた.成長パターンが樹種により異なることは,林内での木本種の共存を促進すると考えられた.

    Dendrographic records for four tropical rainforest trees, collected by Drs K. Yoda and H. Sato at the Pasoh Forest Reserve in June 1971, suggested the rhythmic diurnal changes in trunk radii. The Fourier transform (FT) was applied to the radius oscillations of the four sample trees for understanding the trunk behavior in frequency domains. The maximum FT amplitude occurred at a specific frequency (f<sup>*</sup>) of 0.0469 h<sup>-1</sup> in all trees and suggested consistent diurnal changes in trunk radii, although f<sup>*</sup> = 0.0469 <sup>-1</sup> does not correspond to the ideal period of 24 h. The phase angle at a given frequency (f), or θ<sub>i</sub>(f), for an individual tree with identification number (i) was not significantly correlated with θ<sub>i</sub>(f) for another individual with the identification number j (i≠j, p> 0.05). Autocorrelation coefficients between θ<sub>i</sub>(f) and θ<sub>i</sub>(f + Δf), designated with f and the lag frequency Δf, were not significant for most Δf, suggesting a lack of order in θ<sub>i</sub>(f) with respect to f. The frequency distribution of θ<sub>i</sub>(f) followed a uniform distribution within the range of ±π(± 12 h d<sup>-1</sup>), where π is the circular constant. These traits of θ<sub>i</sub>(f) associated with trunk radii corresponded well with the traits of a different θ<sub>i</sub>(f) calculated from sap flow sequences of conifers, implying temporal partitioning of soil-water resources among trees. The ecological significance of temporal resource partitioning on an hourly basis within small land areas is discussed with reference to hydraulic architecture and hydraulic lift (or redistribution), which are known to be important mechanisms facilitating the coexistence of competing plant species or individuals within a forest stand.

    奈良市に位置する春日山原始林特別天然記念物指定域(34°41'N,135°51'E;298.6ha)に発達する照葉樹林は,奈良公園一帯に生息するニホンジカの局所個体群の増加を背景に,さまざまな影響を受けている.本研究は700年代に春日大社に献木されたのが起源とされる中国地方以南分布種である国内外来種ナギ(Podocarpus nagi)および1930年代に奈良公園に街路樹として植栽された中国原産の国外外来種ナンキンハゼ(Sapium sebiferum)が,春日山原始林の照葉樹林域に侵入していることから,これら2種の分布を定量的に把握し,外来種の空間分布を示すGIS図を作成することによって,照葉樹林への外来種の侵入を明らかにしたものである.現地調査は2002年7月から10月までの期間に,奈良公園側の春日山原始林域西端から東側に約45haの範囲で調査を行った.当年生実生を含む全個体または個体パッチの位置をGPSを用いて記録するとともに,高さ1.3m以上の個体の胸高直径(DBH)を測定し,両種の分布をサイズ別にGISマップに示した.両種が生育していた林冠タイプをギャップ,ギャップ辺縁,疎開林冠および閉鎖林冠に区分し,個体数比率を算出した結果,ナンキンハゼ(n=4543)はギャップ下において出現頻度が高く(54.4%),ナンキンハゼの侵入はギャップ形成に依存する傾向を示した.一方,ナギ(n=6300)は閉鎖林冠下で出現頻度が高く(57.9%),それぞれの種は異なる光環境の立地に侵入していた.両種をサイズクラスに分けて空間分布を把握した結果,ナギは照葉樹林の西端(天然記念物ナギ群落が成立している御蓋山の北側の調査地域に相当する)に多く分布し,調査地域内において西側から東側への密度勾配を示した.一方,ナンキンハゼは顕著な密度勾配はみられなかった.生態的特性の異なる2種の外来種は侵入時期が異なるものの,照葉樹林に侵入後,広域的に拡大していることが明らかになった.春日山照葉樹林は文化的景観によって世界文化遺産に登録されているが,外来種の拡大によって,今後,組成的にも景観的にも大きく変化する可能性が示唆された.
