    Catalytic hydrothermal oxidation of 4-chlorophenol (CP) has been examined using the slurry flow reactor system. The mixed suspension containing CP, hydrogen peroxide and Cu<sub>2</sub>O catalyst was reacted with pressure, temperature and flow rate controlled at 10 MPa, 100-200°C and 1.0-16.0 cm<sup>3</sup>/min, respectively. The remarkable enhancement of CP decomposition by Cu<sub>2</sub>O catalyst was observed at 133-166°C. The semi-quantitative analysis of hydroxyl radicals generated by catalytic hydrothermal oxidation using salicylic acid as a molecular probe revealed that the production of hydroxyl radical was substantially enhanced by Cu<sub>2</sub>O catalyst at the same temperature as the decomposition of CP was enhanced. It was thus indicated that hydroxyl radicals were formed by Fenton-like reaction with Cu<sup>+</sup> ions. It was also found that the degradation of CP was complete in less than 10 sec and that oxalic acid was produced as an intermediate.

    It has been revealed that hydrothermal oxidation of persistent organochlorine substances is dramatically facilitated with the aid of Cu-based catalysts such as Cu-supported WO<sub>3</sub>, because the Fenton-type reaction catalyzed by Cu ions undergoes substantial acceleration under subcritical conditions of water at around 200~300℃, leading to the increased formation of hydroxyl radicals which possess a strong oxidative power. In this study, the catalytic hydrothermal oxidation of 4-chlorophenol with CuO or Cu<sub>2</sub>O has been examined using the slurry flow and catalyst packed-bed reactor systems. It is found that Cu<sub>2</sub>O has a remarkable catalytic activity for the hydrothermal oxidation of 4-chlorophenol compared with those of CuO and Cu-supported TiO<sub>2</sub>. The conversion of 4-chlorophenol reached nearly 100% at reaction temperatures around 130℃ when Cu<sub>2</sub>O was used as catalyst, indicating that it is possible to substantially reduce the reaction condition required for the complete decomposition of persistent organochlorine substances by the hydrothermal oxidation. The continuous treatment of 4-chlorophenol has been also conducted using the packed-bed reactor system with Cu<sub>2</sub>O. The results demonstrated that 4-chlorophenol could be degraded for up to 22 hours without significant loss of the catalytic activity.

    The catalytic and photocatalytic hydrothermal oxidation of chlorobenzene has been examined at reaction temperatures ranging from 25 to 400 °C and at a fixed pressure of 30 MPa, using Cu(II)-grafted tungsten trioxide (Cu/WO<sub>3</sub>) as the catalyst and hydrogen peroxide as the oxidizing reagent. The decomposition efficiency of chlorobenzene is dramatically promoted with the aid of Cu/WO<sub>3</sub>, and approximately 100% decomposition efficiency has been achieved in the dark at a reaction temperature of 200 °C. It is proposed that the formation of hydroxyl radicals from hydrogen peroxide via the Fenton-type reaction catalyzed by Cu ions is subjected to substantial acceleration under subcritical conditions of water at around 200–300 °C, resulting in enhancement of the decomposition efficiency. Irradiation of catalysts with near-UV–visible light also facilitates the decomposition of chlorobenzene because of the photocatalytic action.

    Catalytic hydrothermal oxidation of <i>p</i>-chlorophenol has been examined using two types of reactor systems, i.e., a flow-type reactor system in which the catalyst powder was suspended in the reaction mixtures and a fixed-bed reactor system in which the sintered catalyst was packed in the reactor. Cu- or Fe-grafted TiO<sub>2</sub> was employed as a catalyst and hydrogen peroxide was used as an oxidizing reagent. The decomposition efficiency of <i>p</i>-chlorophenol treated by the flow-type reactor system is considerably enhanced with the help of Cu-grafted TiO<sub>2</sub> at reaction temperatures around 200°C; whereas, little effect is observed at any temperature for Fe-grafted TiO<sub>2</sub>. It is suggested that the Fenton-type reaction catalyzed by Cu ions contained in the Cu-grafted TiO<sub>2</sub> and/or dissolved out in the solution undergoes substantial acceleration at high temperatures, leading to the increased generation of OH· radicals that can effectively oxidize <i>p</i>-chlorophenol. On the other hand, it appears that the Fe-ion-catalyzed Fenton reaction is suppressed in the hydrothermal environment. The prolonged treatment of <i>p</i>-chlorophenol using the fixed-bed reactor system, that is more suitable for practical use than the flow-type one, has also been performed with Cu-grafted TiO<sub>2</sub> catalyst at a reaction temperature of 200°C. The result demonstrates that it is possible to treat <i>p</i>-chlorophenol continuously for up to 36 h without significant loss of the catalytic activity.

    The solvation properties of some room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) and the solvent effect on bimolecular fluorescence quenching reaction have been examined at high pressures ranging from 0.1 to 300 MPa. It is found that Kamlet-Taft parameters (π<sup>*</sup>, β) are sensitive to the type of anions, but not so dependent on the type of imidazolium cations consisting of RTILs. The pressure dependence of microviscosity is found to obey the empirical power-law equation. It is revealed that the rate constant for bimolecular fluorescence quenching reaction is significantly higher than theoretical rate constant of diffusion estimated from microviscosity, suggesting the occurrence of microscopic free space within RTILs which may facilitate the solute diffusion.<br>

      Indium tin oxide (ITO) nanoparticles have been synthesized from the mixed ethylene glycol solution of indium (III) chloride, tin (II) chloride and sodium hydroxide by the solvothermal process with the addition of oleylamine or oleic acid as a protective reagent. The x-ray diffraction patterns of particles synthesized at 250°C show that the ITO begins to be produced after the reaction duration of 6 h when oleylamine is added to the reaction solution, indicating a promoting effect on the ITO formation, whereas only indium oxyhydroxide is formed when oleic acid is used. The transmission electron microscopic observation has revealed that ITO nanoparticles obtained by the addition of oleylamine are monodisperse and their size increases from 4-5 nm to 50-60 nm with elongating reaction duration from 6 to 96 h. ITO thin films are prepared by the multiple deposition of a collodion membrane incorporating synthesized ITO nanoparticles on the glass substrate followed by sintering at 400-500°C. They exhibit a good transparency in the visible region and a specific resistivity as low as 1.0 Ω·cm.<br>

    Two different types of the high-temperature high-pressure reactor systems with one-line or two-line flow paths have been developed to examine the hydrothermal syntheses of metal nanoparticles. For the two-line reactor system, two kinds of reaction solutions could be quickly mixed at the Y-shaped junction inside the reactor under high-temperature high-pressure conditions. The aqueous solutions containing 1.5mM silver nitrate, 30 wt% polyvinylpyrrolidone and three different kinds of reducing agents (trisodium citrate, ethanol or acetone) were reacted at <I>T</I> = 200-350°C and <I>P</I> = 40MPa by the one-line reactor system. The finest silver nanoparticles with average diameter of about 15nm were obtained when trisodium citrate was used as the reducing agent. The bimetallic nanoparticles composed of silver and platinum have been synthesized with the one-line reactor system by using the mixed solution of silver nitrate and dihydrogen hexachloroplatinate (IV) as the starting material. The optical absorption spectra of the obtained bimetallic nanoparticles in the aqueous solutions indicated the spontaneous formation of the platinum-core silver-shell structure. It was demonstrated that smaller Ag nanoparticles with narrower size distribution could be synthesized when the two-line reactor system was used instead of the one-line reactor system under nearly identical experimental conditions.

    The photocatalytic reduction of Ag<SUP>+</SUP> ions by TiO<SUB>2</SUB> nanoparticles was examined in water under high-temperature high-pressure conditions of <I>T</I> = 25–400°C and <I>P</I> = 30 MPa. The analysis of the reaction by uv-vis absorption spectroscopy, the atomic absorption spectrometry, and TEM observations revealed that the efficient photocatalytic activity compared with that at room temperature remained even under hydrothermal and supercritical conditions. These results could open the way to new applications of TiO<SUB>2</SUB> under extreme environments which have never been explored before.

    Solvation dynamics and rotational relaxation in supercritical fluids have been examined using the techniques of the subpicosecond laser spectroscopy. The fluorescence up-conversion technique has been employed to detect the fluorescence anisotropy decay of coumarin 153 in supercritical CO<sub>2</sub> (310 K) and CHF<sub>3</sub> (302, 310 K) over a wide density range. The rotational correlation times in supercritical CHF<sub>3</sub> exhibit the remarkable increase at 0.6-0.7 times <i>ρ</i><sub>c</sub>, which implies that the local solvent density augmentation slows down the rotational dynamics in supercritical fluids. This conclusion is supported by computer simulations based on a 2-site model of fluoroform. The solvation dynamics of the probe 4-dimethylamino-4'-cyanostilbene have been measured in supercritical CHF<sub>3</sub> at 310 K using the optical Kerr-gated emission technique, which appears to have captured most (∼90%) of the dynamics occurring over the accessible density range between 1.4-2.0<i>ρ</i><sub>c</sub>. The measured spectral response exhibits a bimodal decay with ∼0.6 ps and ∼9 ps components and only a modest density dependence.

    Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films incorporating two kinds of unsymmetrical merocyanine dyes (MC (X)/MC (Y) X, Y=O, S, Se) have been fabricated by using octadecane (OD) and arachidic methyl ester (AME) as the matrix molecules; MC (X);MC (Y): 0D;AME = (1-<I>x</I>);<I>x</I>: 1: 1. Absorption spectra of the MC (X) assembies and the mixed assemblies (MC (X)/MC (Y)) have been measured in wide temperature range <I>T</I>=6.0-293 K. The relationship between the absorption coefficient of the low-energy tail of the aggregate band and incident photon energy has been analyzed in the framework of the Urbach-Martienssen (UM) rule.     Application fields / methods etc:The supercirical carbon dioxide and the supercritical water have attracted attentions as clean solvents replacing the conventional toxic organic solvents. We aim to establish the new application of the supercritical fluid.

    We have investigated the photochemical reactions in the supercritical fluid. The influence of the solvent on the chemical reaction can be examined by means of in situ spectroscopic measurements in the supercritical fluid.
