  • <Note>A Study of the Muro and Murochū in Kizuki, Izumo Province during the Sengoku Period

    In the Sengoku period during the 16th century, an entity called the muro 室 and a group called the Murochū 室中existed in the town around Kizuki Taisha in Izumo Province. There are two understandings of the word muro; one which interprets it as a kōjimuro 麹室, a chamber to prepare malted rice for sake brewing, and another that interprets it as a gokushuku 御供宿, lodgings offered by the Kizuki oshi 御師, who provided support and lodgings when believers visited the shrine from remote areas, or as the right to provide them. The latter interpretation has become the scholarly consensus. Based on this latter interpretation, the Murochū has been understood as a local or urban community group formed by the masters. In addition, it has also been pointed out that in terms of the relationship between the Amago clan 尼子氏, who were the Sengoku daimyo of Izumo Province, and the Murochū, the Amago clan controlled the interests of the masters as a muro, organizing them into a privileged group called the Murochū, thereby incorporating the activities of the masters into the circuit of regional control. However, some historical sources suggest that the words muro and gokushuku referred to two different things, and there is room to reconsider the above-mentioned interpretations of muro and the nature of the Murochū based on it, as well as its relationship with the Sengoku daimyo. In the first section, we reexamined the character of the muro by selecting all available historical materials related to the Kizuki muro and examining them in chronological order. As a result, the following facts became clear: 1) the Kizuki muro were as important as the privileges of the gokushuku and housing sites in the distribution economy, 2) the number of muro was limited to 15~16 by the Eiroku era, and the Amago clan was actively involved in determining the number of muro, 3) the Kokuzō of Kizuki Taisha had significant rights in regard to the muro, but these rights were altered due to the intervention of the Amago clan, and eventually the rights to adjudicate and confirm ownership of the muro fell into the hands of the Amago, 4) the muro were taxed, but the Amago left their collection to the Kokuzō, 5) the Murochū were composed of the owners of the muro and were an organization that sought to protect its privileges through ties with the Amago and in disputes with the general public, the Amago initially recognized claims from both sides in disputes over the muro, but eventually ended up accepting the claims of the Murochū. In section 2, we examined matters related to the muro including the gokushuku as well as the kōji chambers of the sake business, along with examples from surrounding areas. As a result, we made clear that 1) based on Amago clan documents, the Amago treated the gokushuku and muro as different things, 2) that the Amago tended to avoid intervening in disputes regarding the gokushuku, but in contrast tried to become actively involved with the muro by confirming rights and judicating disputes, 3) that there was also a muro in the village adjacent to Gakuen-ji Temple, which was closely related to Kizuki Taisha, and that it was taxed, and that it is thought that this muro refers to a kōji chamber because it was recorded together with the tax on dark blue dyeing associated with brewing, and it can be said that the “muro tax” imposed under the daimyo rule in Izumo Province was a tax on kōji chambers, 4) that the Tsubouchi clan who were owners of muro, were engaged in the sake business, and in the government relief for the Mori clan, there were two issues: outstanding accounts on sales of sake and the muro, and thus there is a high possibility that the two were related. Based on the above findings, this paper points out that muro likely refers to a kōji chamber and the right to brew and sell sake that used a kōji chamber, and that the Murochū can be understood as a za-like organization formed by influential merchants to protect the privileges of the sake business un

    This study focuses on documents sent from the Imagawa family who controlled Suruga Province, to Taiseki-ji Temple. By analyzing the types of taxes (cash or labor) levied on Taiseki-ji, and which taxes were exempted and why, we can better understand the society surrounding Taiseki-ji. Through the 15th century Taiseki-ji was not taxed, but in the 16th century the Imagawa imposed public levies on it in the form of building and labor taxes. Around this time, the community adjacent to the temple (monzen) was developing as an urban center, and with many people migrating to live there the number of buildings increased accordingly. Permanent shops were set up, and merchants brought in products from the outside. Various parties attempted to impose taxes on those doing business there and on Taiseki-ji as it accumulated wealth from commerce. The Imagawa, in an effort to assert itself as the sole authority controlling Taiseki-ji, then granted it a tax exemption by virtue of being an "unconnected place" (muensho, usually a sacred space lacking secular connections).

Along with reconstructing the drawings in those instructions, this article faithfully reproduces the written notations as well. Moreover, in comparing the two types of instructions used inconstruction and explicating the castle structure as defined in the instructions, this article gives some insight into the characteristics of Osaka Castle in Hideyoshi's time.

    新規入院患者268例(男性145例、女性123例、平均年齢70.1±12.9歳)を対象に、全14項目から成る質問票による栄養失調の検出力を評価した。質問項目の中で、栄養状態の良否を判定する上で重要と認められたものは、嚥下障害、過去1ヵ月以内の2kg以上の体重減少、過去2週間以内の37℃以上の発熱の3項目であった。この組み合わせよりも判別力は低いが、栄養不良検出の感受性が高いものとして、年齢が70歳以上か否か、過去2週間以内の十分な食事摂取、過去1年の転倒の有無の3項目が挙げられた。栄養状態を評価するためには、主観的および客観的情報の適切な組み合わせが容易かつ迅速な方法であることが示された。

    In the classical and medieval periods the area of Osaka connected the capitals of Nara and Kyoto with the Seto Inland Sea and areas beyond. The city of Osaka developed centered on the Uemachi Plateau, which was 15. m higher than the surrounding area. The first area to flourish following the decline of the ancient capital of Naniwa-no-miya was Shitennōji Temple and its gate town. Because it was believed to be the gate to paradise, many pilgrims came to Shitennōji. Many sick and poor people also gathered there expecting alms from those pilgrims. East of Shitennōji was Imamiya Shrine and its gate town. Farther east was the port of Kizu. These functioned as a single base for transit and transport. The port of Watanabe also developed in the area, along the northern edge of the Uemachi Plateau. This port was at the intersection of land and water routes. Above this port Osaka would develop from the 15th century as a town within Honganji Temple's precincts. Osaka Honganji was a True Pure Land Buddhist temple, and many performers and artisans came to dwell in the town. In this way, medieval Osaka had deep connections with temples and Buddhism. Because it was a religiously sacred land many sick people and beggars seeking aid gathered in and around the city. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

    Detail description：これまで研究対象とした都市・地域は以下の通り。大阪府では、大坂(大阪)、石山本願寺、大阪城、四天王寺、池田、豊中、高槻、芥川、枚方(招提)、飯盛山、門真、若江、久宝寺、古市、高屋城、堺、和泉府中、日根野、泉佐野、貝塚。京都府では、京都、山科、乙訓、大山崎、八幡、山城町、亀岡(亀山)、舞鶴。滋賀県では、菅浦、小谷城、長浜、上平寺、彦根、安土、近江八幡、八日市、大溝、坂本。奈良県では、奈良、薬師寺、大和郡山、今井町。和歌山県では、和歌山、和歌の浦、根来、高野口、隅田、南部。兵庫県では、尼崎、伊丹、兵庫、篠山。この他、最近、フィールドワークをおこなった地域としては、福井県一乗谷・武生、静岡県韮山、岐阜県岐阜、岡山県高梁、広島県吉田、山口県山口、徳島県勝瑞、佐賀県名護屋などがあげられる。

    Advantages and features compared to previous research：文字資料だけでなく、絵画資料、古地図、考古学の成果、地理学の手法などをもちいて、学際的に都市・地域の特質を解明する。

    近畿地方を中心として、中世(とりわけ戦国時代)、近世(とりわけ織田・豊臣時代)の都市の歴史、地域の歴史を研究している。

    中世の大阪は、首都京都と瀬戸内海を結ぶ地に立地した。そのため、西日本各地や朝鮮半島、中国大陸と、京都の間を行き来する、物資、人、情報を中継することになった。大阪地域には西国街道や熊野街道などの陸路、淀川・旧大和川を利用した水路が縦横に張りめぐらされ、それらによって結ばれた多数の都市が展開していた。こうした活発な都市の活動がやがて江戸時代の大坂の誕生へと結びついてゆく。
    中世において、大阪地域が、日本全体のなかでどのように重要な地域であったのかを理解してもらい、古代から現代につづく大阪の歴史に関心をよびおこす
