Nagahiro Yoshida is an associate professor at the School of Engineering, Osaka Metropolitan University. He is working on traffic safety science with an interdisciplinary approach. His research interests include traffic behavior of vulnerable road users, statistical modeling of traffic accident risk, traffic policy with a focus on road safety, evaluation of advanced technologies for traffic accident avoidance, and greenization of urban transport.

    As for the safety of bicycle traffic environment, it is desirable for bicycles to travel in the same direction as automobiles on the roadway because it is considered that the difficulty for car drives to recognize bicycles outside the roadway is a cause of accidents, and the development of a travel space based on traffic on the roadway is being promoted. In this study, video surveys were conducted at several signalized intersections with different intersection inflow conditions for bicycles and left-turning vehicles, and trajectory data from the faster Regions with Convolutional Neural Network Method (Faster R-CNN) was used to investigate the complex phenomenon of straight-line bicycles and left-turning vehicles. For the evaluation method, we focused on the change in speed during the time of conflict and used the quasi time-to-collision (TTC) and the speed difference through the intersection. As a result, it was found that while the speed of bicycles did not change much between different sections of the road, the presence or absence of complications and the position of the traffic were major factors in determining the speed.

    The road space reallocation project in the main street of Osaka, Midosuji has started to realize the concept of human-centered urban space. The project has been undertaken in the way of increasing the space for pedestrians and cyclists. In addition, we are pursuing more comfortable road space by installing rest space. While the Level of Service concept was widely employed to evaluate user comfort issues in the transportation field but it is unknown that the LOS concept could apply to these space differences and evaluate the reallocation effect correctly. In this study, we focus rest space and conduct a survey how installing the space affects traffic flow and pedestrians' activities, and how it affects comfort. As a result, separated road space by rest space effects comfort, and they feel comfort when they walk if the road space where they can walk narrow.

    Accidents caused by failing to observe safety at intersections make up a large portion of bicycle traffic accidents. As such, practical road safety education is compulsory for children. The present study investigated the application of brakes by parent cyclists in accordance with a principle of verbal communication (i.e., verbally communicating their ongoing process of checking and decision making), and the road safety outcomes on children achieved by means of parent child communication while riding on bicycles with two infant seats. Applying the principle of verbal communication was seen to raise the parent cyclists’ awareness of checking for safety, and there was a greater incidence of applying the brakes at intersections as a safety measure. Further, the children displayed a range of responses to their parents’ communications, and responded actively when prompted by their parents checking for safety and anticipating dangers and surrounding physical objects. This was seen to have implications for the children’s road safety education.

    It is demanded to realize the society anyone can travel freely, and the two-rider bicycle might be a potential, practical means of transportation for persons with reduced mobility (PRM). The purpose of this study is to understand the latent opportunities for use of two-rider bicycles by PRM and welfare service providers from the questionnaire and hearing survey, and to understand the influences of the daily use of two-rider bicycles by welfare service providers from the fact-finding case survey. The results confirmed that there were latent opportunities and some influences by PRM and welfare service providers, it might lead to promotion of using two-rider bicycle for PRM and welfare service providers.

    The road reallocation project for pedestrians and cyclists is making steady progress; for instance, wider footpaths and well-maintained bicycle paths can be observed.
    In Japan, a similar reallocation project on Midosuji, the main street in Osaka, started in 2017 based on the concept of human-centered urban space. The project has been undertaken by widening the space for pedestrians and cyclists and narrowing the roadways. This is an effort to ensure the comfort of pedestrians and cyclists. The Level of Service (LOS) concept is often used to evaluate user comfort. This is one of the indicators of comfort in the traffic space. The US Highway capacity manual of 2016 has divided LOS into six stages (A to F). However, there is a possibility that LOS may not be able to provide comfort in a mixed space of both pedestrians and cyclists fully.
    In this study, the actual situation of pedestrians and cyclists was investigated on Midosuji in order to widen the street for them. The purpose was to investigate the spatial components that affect their comfort on the road and the space reallocation from the point of view of cyclists and pedestrians. A questionnaire survey (used as a subjective indicator) and a video survey (used as an objective indicator) were compared based on three sections of the road: an undeveloped section, a developed section without a sitting area, and a developed section with a sitting area. The sample of the study was 370 pedestrians and 41 cyclists. The survey was conducted during a peak hour on the three sections.
    The results of the survey were based on the change of each LOS index. On the rank of “density” and “the number of events” on LOS improved. The rank of “flow rate” was A, it remained unchanged. Also, the rank of “speed” remained lower than the other items. On the other hand, according to the subjective evaluation, even if the space for pedestrians and cyclists was narrowed after the model maintenance was carried out, comfort would improve if a sitting area was provided. From the above, a difference between the objective indicator and the subjective indicator was observed. The possible reasons for this difference are the influence on the desired speed and the sitting area, such as benches. The pedestrian who walked while thinking “I want to walk faster than now” did not feel comfortable compared to the one who walked while thinking “I want to travel more slowly than now.” For the pedestrians, the sitting area was a comfortable element, while for the cyclists, it was both comfortable and uncomfortable.
    In the future, an image analysis will be carried out using yolo v3, which is object detection method from an image based on deep learning. It can efficiently and automatically recognize people. Then, using technical skills, passer-by detection and the state of affairs on sitting and standing will be conducted.

    In Cambodia, motorcycle use have spread rapidly in recent years, and the proportion of accidents involving motorcycles has also increased. Motorcycle accidents have accounted for more than 90% in the 15-24 age group, and main factors were identified as excessive speed, drink driving, and dangerous overtaking. In response to these situations, various countermeasures for traffic safety focusing on 3E(Engineering, Enforcement and Education) have been introduced by government, However, taking into the account the current situation regarding traffic accidents occurring among young people, the quality of road safety education for young people is insufficient. So, the purpose of this study is clarifying issues on driving education relating to fundamental driving behaviors on motorcycle traffic safety focusing on young generation, such as travel speed, lane changing, and passing maneuver etc.
    Many studies on motorcycle traffic safety examined problems especially in Asian countries including analysis of risk behavior in Thailand (Hongsranagon et al., 2011), and various issues have been identified such as helmet use, alcohol, training, daytime running lights, driving licenses, and risk taking behaviors (Lin & Kraus, 2009). With regard to driver education, there are many studies on hierarchical models for driving behavior (Michon, 1976) and their extension (Keskinen, 2014). In research on motorcycle use and the effects of education, there are studies on the relationship between education and traffic safety behavior (Woratanarat et al., 2013), behavioral intention (Hung & Huyen, 2011), educational content and license system (Watson et al., 2007). In particular, to improve traffic safety performance among young people, dealing with risk-taking behavior (Twisk, 1994) and the importance of move advanced driving skill training in addition to the conventional training have been identified (Barua, Sidawi & Hoque, 2014). On the other hand, in order to better understand these driving behaviors, the importance of evidence-based traffic safety measures (Wegman et al., 2015) such as naturalistic driving observation studies (Espié et al., 2013), design of research and analysis (Antin et al., 2011), have been pointed out. As mentioned above, there are various research results regarding traffic safety education of young people on motorcycle, so we focus on driver behavioral changes in young people and the possibility of future introduction of more practical traffic safety education in Cambodia. This study focus on analyzing whether hazard perception education and training affects the development of more defensive driving behavior in young people, based on the comparative observation of actual driving behavior.
    In this research, the following three activities described below were carried out. The first, an observation survey using video cameras attached on motorcycles were conducted to understand some insights from actual traffic condition. Next, based on these results, a traffic safety workshop (WS) for the participants in the behavior survey was held. The workshop consisted of two parts: a classroom portion, and a driving portion. In classroom learning, after explaining the situation of traffic accidents in Cambodia, a training aimed at improving hazard prediction ability was carried out using dangerous driving scenarios extracted from the video observation of driving behavior. In driving portion, a basic driving training was given by an instructor. Finally, a video observation of driving behavior was carried out again to examine the impact of the traffic safety workshop. Furthermore, to confirm the effect of WS, we compared driving behavior before WS and after driving behavior after WS by statistical method.
    As the change in driving behavior after WS, the average traveling speed was decreased, average frequency of lane changing and passing a motorcycle were increased. As this results, more practical and advanced driver education, such as hazard prediction and knowledge for driving safety can be expected to improve safety performance through motorcycle driving behavior.

    Cycling on the sidewalks have brought some safety problems in Japan. Preceding research findings have suggested that building bicycle lanes on roadways or providing information related with traffic law may encourage cyclists to ride on the roadway. However, the effects of individual knowledge and experi-ences as well as road traffic conditions on cyclist path choice behavior are not clearly captured. The pur-pose of this paper, therefore, is to analyze these effects on path choice behavior. Multiple methods; a pho-tomontage experiment and on-site observations were employed to collect both stated preference data and revealed preference data. As a result, some factors encouraging cycling on the roadways or discouraging cycling on the sidewalks as well as future intervention effects are revealed.

    The visually impaired need help, especially when traveling longer distances. This is because they can use their own means of transportation such as cars or bicycles to get around, but it is difficult for them to move from place to place by themselves. In general, having an alternative means of transportation is related to the range of activities, especially in areas where public transportation is not fully available. Therefore, this study focused on tandem bicycles as an additional means of transportation that can be used by the visually impaired without a driver's license. A tandem bicycle is a bicycle with multiple pedals and saddles. This bicycle allows multiple people to ride side by side or in front and behind each other, pedaling at the same time. In recent years, many enthusiastic activities and events have been held throughout Japan to increase awareness and usage of tandem bicycles. Visually impaired people also ride tandem bicycles at such events and have extraordinary experiences such as feeling the wind. However, since riding a bicycle with more than one person is basically prohibited in Japan, tandem bicycles may not meet the requirements of traffic safety regulations. In addition, although there is a movement to deregulate tandem bicycles, there are still concerns about the safety of visually impaired people using tandem bicycles on public roads.
    In this study, we examined the possibility of using tandem bicycles to enhance the mobility of visually impaired people in their daily lives. During the tandem bicycle trial, we conducted an interview survey to understand visually impaired people's feeling of use and anxiety, as well as areas for improvement in their daily lives. Furthermore, through riding experiments, we conducted basic behavioral analysis to properly identify the causes of the problem. Based on these results, we will take on the challenge of creating guidelines for tandem bicycles on public roads for the visually impaired.

    Bicycle lanes with legal control have been introduced on carriageway as a governmental pilot project since 2008 in Japan. However the facility design standard for cyclists on roadways is not determined yet while many standards remain the same as for cars/drivers. There are few researches on cyclists' specific eye movement and behavior with road conditions. The amount of information on road should be minimized to avoid confusion, but required to be an informative road space for bicyclists even without driving license. Therefore, some empirical experiments have been conducted to understand differences of cyclist's eye movement and behavior on various types of facilities.

    Bicycle transportation is considered to have positive environmental and health impacts worldwide. In order to maximize these benefits, safer bicycle facilities are required as an effective engineering intervention in the field of transportation planning and traffic engineering.
    In Japan, shared-use paths designed to allow two-way traffic on both sides of the road were introduced in the 1970s to reduce bicycle accidents, and have since become a common engineering standard for dealing with bicycle traffic on roads.
    This type of facility is considered subjectively safe, but not objectively safe because of the separation. In addition, several accident statistics show that the risk of bicycle accidents remains higher than that of motor vehicles. However, there are few studies on the risk of bicycle accidents in different facilities.
    This paper deals with the accident risk and severity of three types of bicycle facilities in order to examine their objective safety using a generalized linear model (GLM). Data for approximately 2,830 km of Hyogo Prefecture's arterial road network and approximately 600 links were analyzed.
    The results showed that variables such as the number of unsignalized intersections and traffic volume had a statistically significant effect on the increased frequency of minor injury accidents. It was also found that at unsignalized intersections, bicycles traveling in the opposite direction on shared-use paths were more likely to be involved in head-on collisions.

    In Japan, there are huge number of bicycles and little length of bicycle facilities. In 2009 and 2010, the model projects of developing bicycle facilities on carriageways were conducted, but 75% of those facilities were on sidewalks. It is pointed out that a reason of the lack in bicycling space is probably absence of bicycle transport planning scheme, but on the contrary, in recent years, some municipalities begin to develop the bicycle network plan. In this study, we conducted interview survey at 17 cities where are active in the area of bicycle transport in Japan, and revealed the objectives, scheme, and problems in planmaking.<br>As the result, it was revealed that some of the people in charge of bicycle transport can't break away from the traditional rules of cycling on sidewalks and the facilities which are new developed are not match the ready-made facilities. In addition, it is needed that information about the facility design guideline and the case examples by the national government and the financial support at the planning phase.

    Recently, several researches showed that riding bicycle has some health benefits in many countries. Riding bicycle in Japan also attracts people who have concerns about their health and environment while bicycle trip statistics showed that the average trip distance was much shorter than other countries. Under these condition, some bicycle transport planners focuses on the engineering property of bicycle network to realize health benefit effectively, but there is few researches describing the health effects on existent bicycle path conditions.<br>Therefore we conducted the preliminary experiment that 8 students ride on 3 courses representing urban road conditions with approx. 5km length including different types of bicycle path and traffic condition. During the experiment, heart rate was monitored as dependent variable. Before the experiment, expiratory gas analysis was conducted in laboratory which gives an indirect estimation of energy consumption using the relationship between the load strength of physical activity and energy consumption.<br>This study analyses the relationship between energy consumption rate and bicycle path conditions such as degree of gradient, interval of signals, and accumulation of physical tiredness using indirect energy consumption estimation method.     Recently, the number of accidents involved school students by riding bicycle. has been increasing. One of the reasons may be the lack of understanding rules of traffic including bicycle and consciousness of road safety. Then, this study focused on not only the consciousness of road safety of school students and parents especially in case of using bicycle, but also the actual condition and major issues of road safety education in school and home.<br>In this study, the important issues concerned with road safety mentioned above were revealed by analyzing the data of large scale questionnaire research including 6,000 and more respondents and selected 29 schools in Hyogo prefecture. As a result, a lack of road safety education in junior high school and high school and understanding and interest of road safety came out of these analyses. Furthermore, base on the additional feedback survey, what is important is continuous instruction and training for teachers about road safety. In addition, it must be important to investigate the cooperation among school students and parents, teacher, police officer and researcher, in order to the effective education system for road safety.

    In Japan, bicycle lanes with legal control have been introduced on roadways as a government pilot project since 2008. However, the design standards for bicycle facilities are still unclear due to the lack of knowledge about safety and convenience for bicycle users. Therefore, in this study, we focused on the interaction between visual information and bicyclists' behavior in various types of bicycle facilities. Using an eye-mark tracking system and a probe bicycling system with sensors to measure handlebar angle, pedal speed, and braking, we conducted an experiment to examine different types of bikeways where pavement markings, signs, and additional warning sign boards were installed on existing roads. The results of the study were as follows. In addition to the measurements made by the probe bicycles, an interview survey was conducted to ascertain the perceptions of cyclists. In this paper, we present the results of several comparative analyses to understand the characteristics of eye tracking on bikeways and behavioral responses to visual information. The results show that the range of eye movements is limited in the bicycle lane due to the high speed of the vehicle, but the range of eye movements is increased when transitioning from the bicycle lane to other bicycle paths due to the need to search for obstacles in the surroundings.

    Several studies have shown that riding a bicycle has health benefits in many countries. In Japan, while riding bicycles attracts people who are interested in health and the environment, statistics on bicycle travel show that the average trip distance is much shorter than in other countries. Under these circumstances, some bicycle transportation planners have focused on the engineering characteristics of bicycle networks to effectively achieve health benefits, but few studies have described health benefits in existing bikeway conditions.
    In this study, we conducted a preliminary experiment in which eight students rode on three courses, each of which assumed an urban road of about 5 km in length, with different types of bikeways and traffic conditions. In the experiment, heart rate was measured as the dependent variable. Before the experiment, we conducted exhaled gas analysis in the laboratory to indirectly estimate energy consumption based on the relationship between the load intensity of physical activity and energy consumption.
    In this study, the indirect energy consumption estimation method was used to analyze the relationship between bicycling conditions, such as the degree of gradient, signal intervals, and accumulation of physical fatigue, and energy consumption. We also investigated the effect of psychological pressure caused by road and traffic conditions on heart rate.

    In a residential area, most intersection traffic accidents occur at a scattered small non-signal intersection. At these intersections, most countermeasures are traffic control devices, such as traffic restriction and a road reflector, because of improvement cost or spatial restrictions. However, it isn't enough to consider the introductory reason and effect of these devices for that the relation between these devices and traffic accidents isn't clear or small traffic. Therefore, in order to consider the condition of these device improvement in a residential area, the relation between these device improvement and traffic accidents was analyzed based on these surveys.

    The authors are attempting to develop the traffic simulation as one of tools for evaluating motorcycle safety measures. In this paper, we deal with a motorcycle behavior overtaking an on-street parking vehicle, which is the most basic behavior in model construction. With the critical point distributions derived from the longitudinal and lateral potential curves and the potential thresholds, a statistical method extracting the passing-start point and the turning-start point is proposed. Analyzing swept path data observed from the actual traffic flow, model parameters concerning the passing-start point which is the most critical point in the trajectory, are estimated and the model identification method is discussed.

    二輪車関連事故が全事故の約3割を占めていることから,二輪車を対象とした効果的な交通安全対策が求められている.そのため,特に原動機付自転車(原付)に代表されるような二輪車独特の走行特性に対応したリスク評価が求められる.本稿では,原付の走行挙動に基づく走行リスクを定量化するポテンシャルモデルの概要を述べ,路上駐車車両回避挙動の観察データを用いてモデルの検証を行うとともに,代表的な原付と自動車の混在状況のうち,危険度の高いと考えられる,「単路で原付が追い越される現象」と「交差点流入部で原付が左折車に追従する現象」を取り上げ,モデルを応用したリスク評価を試み,そのリスク程度を明示した.これによって,提案したモデルが,二輪車関連の交通事象や対策効果の評価に有用となり得るものと考えられる.

    In Japan, the number of traffic accidents in mixed traffic having the higher rate of motorcycles among the world, is increasing. Evaluation of traffic safety measures taking account of motorcycles is important. In this paper, a potential model which can express motorcycle behavior near a crossing is proposed, which is to be an essential part of the traffic simulation model used for evaluation of moped safety. The authors show concepts of a model concerning traffic situations affecting swept path of motorcycle which proceeds into a crossing, and estimate model parameters about motorcycle behavior evading an on-street parking vehicle.

    Recently,the use of bicycles for short length trips has been encouraged as one of measures for reduction of environmental pollution. However,in order to not only make it be useful for environmental issues,but also not increase accidents,it should be necessary that facilities relevant to bicycle were supplied at an appropriate level.
    In this paper,it was revealed that the demand of bicycle use was related to the degree of supply of facilities,and also the increase of demand caused the increase of accidents. And also,it was pointed out that the policy of bicycle use had to investigate based on both viewpoints of the supply level of facilities and the number of accidents. Furthermore,the number of traffic accidents involved bicycles was estimated according to the supply level of facilities for cycling and parking. As a result,base on these analyses,a quantitatively and qualitatively appropriate design of pavements was proposed to reduce the occurrences of accidents.

    Delay caused by traffic congestion often loses travel time reliability of bus expected as a feature of public transportation. The provision of real-time operational information to passengers is essential to reduce anxiety about scheduled time through the travel. To realize more effective and direct way to provide information,a personalized bus location system (PBLS) was designed based on a GPS-equipped bus information system. This paper focuses on system requirements to satisfy user needs about travel time reliability. Furthermore,we investigate perspective on the bus information system based on an experimental study of PBLS demonstrated in Kizu-minami district.

    In this paper,the behavior and consciousness for safety of both pedestrians and drivers on the pedestrian crossing without traffic signal were surveyed by using video camera and interview. As a result,some major findings came out as follows; 1) there were many potential risks for pedestrian crossing according to both behaviors,2) the road sections according to the degree of accidental risks were defined by the relative location of pedestrian and approaching vehicle,3) some suitable measures were proposed according to each section,and 4) as a case study,the phased implementation of suitable measures was proposed,under taking account of influences by introducing measures.

    Major problems concerned with urban transport have been caused by the unreasonable car demands. In order to drastically solve such condition,it may be essential to realize not only the suitable modal split by introducing the strategic measures represented by the Transport Demand Management (TDM),which lead or compel the modal shift or the change of trip behavior,but also the improvement of public transport services. In this paper,based on some advanced examples as well as some case studies including the survey of residents needs in future,some major findings came out as follows; 1)it should be essential to introduce the integrated transport systems based on the improvement of public transport services including the fare systems,in order to solve the urban transport problems,2)it may be possible to increase the demands for public transport by introducing the PTPS or new systems like the community bus,3)it should be required the better partnership of local government,residents and entrepreneur of transport,to realize the integrated transport for sustainable society.

    In this study, the recognition level and the utility for various kinds of road safety facilities including some new developed facilities to specify the border between road and sidewalk were analyzed based on the questionnaire surveys for drivers. As a result, the recognition level for new developed facilities was remarkably higher than that for many pf existing facilities. In addition, new facilities were effective to reduce the vehicle’s speed. That is, the utility of these new facilities was confirmed for safety of crossing pedestrians.

    In this study, driver’s behaviour and consciousness for avoidance and deceleration at conflict points of narrow streets were surveyed and analyzed. As a result, the differences of conflict conditions were depended on attributes of drivers as well as objects of conflict. In addition, it was clear that there were remarkably differences of speed evaluation, avoidance behaviour and recognition, according to these conditions. Therefore, these findings should be useful to not only evaluate the dangerous level but also introduce the more effective measures.

    This paper proposes the concept of "Humanity Town" to realise a sustainable city. To evaluate the humanity level of cities from the viewpoint of sustainability,some quantitative indicators which represent urban spaces,facilities and transport systems are analysed in simple models as a case study. A result shows that changing transport systems rather than reallocating urban style derived from land-use have a possibility to improve the humanity level.

    In Shanghai City, as similar to major cities in China, the rapid development in economy in recent has brought the unreasonable demand of traffic in spite of poor infrastructure. In addition, as there are too many bicycles in Shanghai city, almost arterial roads are jammed with cars and bicycles. Then, in this paper, two new ideas of traffic operation including cars and bicycles were proposed and evaluated through the simple case studies. One of them is the introduction of one-way system into the centre of city, and the other is the new idea to properly consider the road capacity to deal with the traffic flow mixed cars with bicycles.

    Recently, it is considered that road network for pedestrians may be more important than that for vehicles from the viewpoint of the concept of barrier-free and sustainable society in future. To achieving this policy, safety, comfortable and convenient road will be more needed, especially continuous road network and enough road spaces for pedestrians are indispensable. So this study focuses on characteristics of travel patterns with short distance to transport terminal for pedestrians, cyclists and bus users to pick up the basic problems. As a result, the relationship between evaluations of road network and factors of route choice was analyzed and some major findings which may be useful for the development of central area, came out of this study.

    Recently, heat pollution peculiar to city brings some problems in various environments. Especially in road space, high surface temperature of road pavement causes a rise to excess of air temperature above ground surface. As a result, it is considered that this thermal condition has unfavorable effect upon pedestrians or residents in summer. Therefore, in this study, the heat environment in road space from the viewpoint of pedestrian consciousness was evaluated. in addition, based on analysis of some relationship between pedestrian's perception and some physical indicator, some issues to evaluate and improve the thermal condition of urban road space were investigated.

    Road pavements generally are raised to a high temperature owing to heat accumulation in summer, thereby consequently giving adverse effects to thermal environment of road space such as pedestrians' pathway. In this study, in order to quantitatively determine the actual conditions, the thermal environment was investigated together with the problems from the viewpoints of the pedestrian's perception and the surface characteristics. As a result, a remarkably high surface temperature of the road pavement, centering about daytime in summer was particularly observed. Especially, strong sunlight and heatedness of the road pavement gave great causes for hotness and discomfort of the pedestrians, with a close cause-and-effect relationship therebetween. Therefore, the surface characteristics of the pavement material, one of such causes, were remarked, and two indices, coloring and area of surface, were chosen, and the relationships with the changes in the surface temperature were quantitatively analyzed. As a result, there is observed a negative correlation between the brightness, expressing the luminescence of the surface, and the surface temperature, so that an increase of the surface temperature could be suppressed by increasing the brightness. In addition, it was quantitatively shown that an increase in the surface area by producing ruggedness on the road pavement promoted heat dissipation of the road pavement in nighttime, whereby the surface temperature could be lowered.

    Road pavement occupies large area in the urban area, and surface temperature of road pavement becomes remarkably high. In the past study, it has been shown that porous pavement have been expected to show an effect of reduction for rising the surface temperature. In this study, some experimental observations were carried out to consider this effect quantitatively, and surface temperature data, including the reduction effect by water sprinkling water in the actual environmental situation, were collected and analyzed.

    There are various types of bicycle infrastructure, including separated and shared paths on sidewalks and roadways alongside other transportation modes. Although each type of bicycle path requires different skills and confidence from cyclists, interactions between user response and path conditions have not been captured well.
    Previous studies have shown that safety, stress, and comfort levels of cyclists affect route choice behaviours. In terms of stress response, researchers have developed evaluations of road conditions by measuring vital reactions using heart rate interval (RRI), Galvanic skin response (GSR), Electroencephalography (EEG), and Electromyography (EMG). While riding a bicycle in various conditions affects user response through vital reactions, few studies have considered the comprehensive relationship between stress response and the task intensity, as cycling requires physical activity under complex task conditions.
    Therefore, in order to obtain some basic insights on vital reactions associated with road conditions during bicycle use, an experimental observation of vital reactions using RRI, EMG, and GSR in two different designated courses that required different riding tasks considering individual riding experience was conducted. Subjects were five students with different frequencies of bicycle usage on a daily basis.
    Results indicated that vital reactions while riding on the paths requiring multitasking, such as movement among other bicycle users and tilting the vehicle during curved driving, showed an increase on all indices compared to the reactions under single-task conditions. In addition, it was found that the vital reactions in daily users tended to be larger under any driving conditions compared to the reactions of occasional users.
    With respect to the next step, additional observations on different roads under heavy traffic conditions will be measured, followed by an analysis of the interrelationship between riding situations associated with traffic conditions and vital reactions.

    Distributed around rivers and harbors such as the Yodo River and Osaka Bay, the Hanshin Industrial Region is Japan’s leading industrial area. The area developed around the steel and shipbuilding industries before the war, while after the war, many food manufacturers located here, and recent redevelopments have resulted in a variety of landscapes existing in the industrial region. The Hanshin Industrial Region has high historical value, and it is hoped that the landscape will be preserved and utilized as industrial heritage. However, the composition of elements making up the many viewpoints and landscapes in the region has not been determined. Therefore, after fixing viewpoints out at sea and organizing/classifying the landscape elements, this study conducted a fundamental analysis of the composition and locational characteristics of distinctive port landscapes.

    兵庫県東灘区六甲アイランドの住民組織が、島内における自転車利用環境を向上するための計画を策定するために、兵庫県のまちづくり助成金を用いて活動しており、その一部の計画策定、および調査等において支援を求められたもの。2014年度より開始し、卒論ではニュータウンにおける自転車利用の課題について、島内外のこどもの自転車教育に関する比較研究を実施。

    大阪市中央区内の企業をはじめとする関係者が集まり、自転車の適正利用を推進するために、年に数回の会議を開催(2010年度~)。アドバイザー的役割として参加。自転車交通に関わる様々な周辺情報を提供することで、関係者が前向きに問題改善に取り組むきっかけとなった。また、学生の卒論で地域の駐輪問題の実態調査にも取り組み、地域の実情理解に貢献した。
