The history of study on stability limit control of gasoline engine was so long and many of them controlled the past cycle combustion fluctuation rate. However, most of the cycles are less than the stable limit fluctuation rate even when the engine is operated near the stable limit. Therefore, if the future cycle fluctuation rate can be predicted, it is considered it becomes possible to extend the lean limit. So, we investigated the specifications of the partial Autocorrelation of IMEP fluctuations. This result showed that the former cycle had significant influence on the next cycle and the proportion of the alternating fluctuations was high. This report shows the method and performance which predicts adaptively the next cycle IMEP fluctuation rate based on the above results.

In order to avoid an obstacle automatically for an automated vehicle, this paper investigated a method to generate a target trajectory using a clothoid curve and to control the vehicle. Although a mathematical constraints or a potential methods are often used to generate the target trajectory for an obstacle avoidance, it requires trial and error and experience, and it is also necessary to consider the vehicle's drivability. The clothoid curve is often used for a road curve design, therefore, the curve is considered to be suitable for the characteristics of a vehicle driving. Although a clothoid curve passing through a target point is necessary for obstacle avoidance, such clothoid curve is often obtained by trial and error. Therefore, the numerical analyses were executed to obtain the characteristics of the clothoid curve, then, the method was investigated to generate the clothoid curve to pass through the target point. Furthermore, a method to generate a target avoidance trajectory was also investigated expanding the generated clothoid curve based on the traveling characteristics of a vehicle. For driving on the target trajectory satisfactory, both the position and turning angle of the vehicle are controlled by means of a steering manuplation. The controller was constructed using a 1-input 2-output system, therefore, it is very difficult to satisfy both value at the same time. Furthermore, it is also necessary to consider a nonholonomic characteristics of the vehicle. From these point, this paper investigated the optimal control using nonlinear least square probrem sequential quadratic programming(NLSSQP) by means of the time behaviour of input and output in the evaluation value. Well expected results are obtained and shown in the simulation and the experiment.

A new design method that satisfies the setting settling time with small maximum overshoot in a servo controller was developed using a PI controller and an internal feedback system. The internal feedback system consists of the model parameter of the controlled object that was approximated as a second-order lag-time system. Therefore, an adaptive ability that counteracts the changing model parameters was required. In this paper, the variable parameters of the controlled object were obtained by on-line execution of a non-linear least-squares method. Suitable adaptation by the developed method was confirmed in simulation and experimental tests.

For improvement of fuel economy of a gasoline engine, EGR usage or stop-start sequence are increasing. Under any condition, a precise control of an air fuel ratio(AFR) is required to optimize the purification efficiency of an exhaust gas. Recently, a model predictive control(MPC) using a nonlinear model was paid attention for an accurate control. This paper experimentally investigated an application of MPC using a linear model, but it has two inputs for control and disturbance. On account of predicting the disturbance effect successfully, AFR control using MPC satisfied good performance with some robustness.

The model predictive controller(MPC) is paid attention as an optimal controller design method. In case of the MPC was designed by means of a linear model about objective system, the control performances were deteriorated on account of parameter vary. Exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) has been applied to improve the fuel consumption recently. Internal EGR gives a great impact to the dynamic characteristics of the air induction system. Therefore, air fuel ratio(AFR) controllers have to compensate the effect for the prification efficiency of exhaust gas emissions. In this study, the backstepping and a feedforward controls with the adaptive mechanism were applied to the air fuel ration control and the robustness was demonstrated experimentally. The proposed controller showed a sufficiently robustness and a highly precise AFR control.

Recently, in order to improve the fuel consumption of a gasoline engine, a condition of mixed intake gas was varied to improve combustion efficiency. Besides, a transient state was increased in the test-mode of regulation. In order to purify the exhaust gas efficiently with a three-way catalyst, the AFR should be controlled within the window around a stoichiometric ratio. Therefore, a precise control system was required to control AFR to the target value under any intake gas condition. For a fast-response and highly robust control system, both a feed-forward(FF) controller and a feed back(FB) controller were required. And those controller were desirable to equip with a robustness or an adaptability. From this point of view, in order to add an adaptability to the model based FF controller, the error value was used to adjust the compensation value. And the feedback controller was designed using the backstepping method that was well known as a nonlinear adaptive controller. And both controller was operated as if those were fused in one-controller, then, a precise AFR control results were obtained. Then, Two sets of parameters in each controller were provided and an investigation was carried out as to which combination is superior for robustness regarding several initial starting engine speeds.

The regulation about emission purification and fuel consumption of an automobile becomes increasingly strict for environmental issue. Especially, the performance while transient state is focused on because transient state was increased in the new JC08 emission test-mode. Emission purification of the gasoline engine is attained both using a three way catalyst and controlling air fuel ratio(AFR) by means of an oxygen sensor while steady state. However, while transient state, AFR is deteriorated because of non-linear character such as a fuel wall-wet flow balance, allowance of each engine, aging and ambient of operation. Therefore, highly performed controller is necessary for AFR control at transient state. Both a feedforward and a feedback control were required to obtain such performance. However, each control system was designed independently. Therefore harmonizing both control system is desired when those were performed at a same time. In this paper, adaptive gain system was respectively equipped to the feedforward system and the feedback control. After some time repeat of a regulate control, those control system were fused and performed as a feedforward controller with a small feedback compensation. Then, the experiment were also carried out at different operating condition. The results showed a good regulating performance as a transient state regulator.

The utilisation of the oxygen storage capacity of TWC is recently focused on for the improvement of emission purification and the purification of an engine exhaust gas is achieved fairly high level. However, the control system is seemed to be complicated to use such ability. For the simple utilisation of this ability, a new air fuel ratio control system and algorithm was investigated. The fuel injection mass was modulated periodically and the air excess ratio was detected at the TWC outlet by an oxygen sensor. As the output signal of an oxygen sensor was switching type, the signal value was filtered by a moving average method for translation to an analog value and the moving average value was used for the periodic modulation control as the control value. Furthermore, the two feed forward control system were equipped for fast response and stability of the fuel control. This simple control system was operated at transient state in many driving conditions, and compared with other control systems. The proposed control system can cut the emissions of NO_x and THC concurrently and the reduced amount were larger than other control system.
