    An in-situ color measurement method during heating in an oven is required for optimizing the oven cooking operation. However, conventional colorimetric apparatus is not applicable because such processes usually involve high temperatures and wet surfaces. In this study, we equip an oven chamber with optical fibers connected to a halogen light and spectrometer to perform the in-situ (real time) color measurement. To demonstrate the usability of this method, we observed the color change in white bread heated by hot air and superheated steam at 200°C as a trial experiment, and compared results from two other types of colorimetric measurements of the samples after heating: a color image recording system using a digital camera, and a commercial spectrophotometer. We found that the value of <i>L</i>* decreased more quickly, and <i>b</i>* had a lower value for baking by superheated steam in comparison with baking by hot air at the same temperature.

    One of the important measures to be adopted in heat islands is the improvement of urban surface coating. Use of highly reflective materials for the outer walls is an effective way to prevent heat from penetrating the buildings, and nowadays many products with reflective properties have been developed. In this study, we present field measurements conducted in November 2010 and March 2011 in order to evaluate the reflectance of highly reflective roofing sheets installed in actual buildings. We measured the reflectance of highly reflective roofing sheets installed on the top of 20 primary and middle schools in Osaka city. Furthermore, energy savings of the highly reflective roofing sheets were estimated. These energy savings were compared with those of an insulation material.

    Two kinds of directional retroreflective materials are manufactured, which are designed to show abrupt change in reflectance at the incident angle (&Theta;) of around 30 degrees. The measured solar reflectances are 17.7 percent for &Theta; &ge; 40 deg. and 39.0 percent for &Theta; &le; 20 deg. for one type; 54.4 percent and 40.8 percent for the other. Building materials having these kinds of incident angle dependences can be used as cool roofs free of side effect; they can be high-reflective exclusively against summer sunlight, and low-reflective against other light sources, such as, winter sunlight, headlights of cars, and street lights.

    We focused to develop the low-vision environmental simulation system in which subjects could experience moving through the environment in the condition of low vision. In this study, we have made the fundamental experiments on the validity of the environmental simulation system to evaluate the spatial legibility and the accessibility for low-vision person.We had examined three kinds of experiments as follows.<br>1. First experiment is measuring Reproducing Low-Vision (R-vision) with picture effect.<br>2. Second experiment is a validity study about the recognition of signage, steps and stairs.<br>3.Third experiment is a validity study about the way-finding in common space. Each experiment had been done with 40 subjects including 4 comparative groups of vision 0.6, 0.3, 0.1 measured by Landolt C.

    Visual images are one of the most important means of determining whether food has been cooked to perfection, especially while baking, which is a popular cooking method. In this study, equipment for recording the images of the food surface and image editing software were developed in order to record color images having generality and to evaluate the color change due to baking. A spherical dome with a diameter of 500 mm, whose inner surface was painted white, was used as the integrating sphere. The subject (food) was placed in the middle of the dome. Two D65 fluorescent lamps powered by a high-frequency inverter power supply were placed below the subject as the light source. Thus, the subject could be illuminated only by indirect light. The X-Rite White Balance Card and X-Rite ColorChecker were used for color correction. The colors with Munsell chroma, <i>C</i>, less than 5 were in a good agreement with the standard value obtained from the color chart after color correction. The color change of breadcrumbs during re-baking under 200℃ airflow is evaluated from a histogram of <i>L</i><sup>*</sup> values versus the number of pixels of the corrected image as a test case.

    We show experimentally that retroreflective materials reduce the reflected heat. They can be used as the building materials to reduce urban heat island effect. We measure the retroreflective component of retroreflective materials for the first time. The procedures are as follows. First, the total reflectance is deduced from the thermal measurement. Then, the reflectance without retroreflection is measured by using a spectrophotometer with the integrating sphere. Finally, the retroreflective component is calculated by subtracting the latter from the former. The measured retroreflective components are about 10 percent for bead-embedded type, and 20 percent for capsule-lens type.

    The solar reflective performance of several retroreflective materials are evaluated by outdoor measurements. Their reflectances were derived from the quantity of heat energy received, which were calculated from temperature data. By correcting the measured data to fit the reflectivities of several non-retroreflective materials, the value of retroreflective component can be determined with an accuracy of about 1 percent, irrespective of measurement date. The measured retroreflective components are 5 and 13 percent for the bead-embedded type, 18 percent for the capsule-lens type, and 24 and 30 percent for the prism-array type.

    A procedure is described for evaluating the solar reflectance of building materials by using a spectrophotometer. The point is that one should use the calibrated diffuser as a standard reference for reflectance; values of sample reflectance measured with a calibrated polytetrafluoroethylene resin (PTFE) are most reliable. Pressed barium sulfate, which is widely used in colorimetry, is not adequate as a standard reference for measuring the solar reflectance.

    Designers and ordinary people who are interested in color design seldom use the daylight simulator D65 as a light source for ordinary observation of surface colors. Instead, they usually use a common white fluorescent lamp. Color shifts do exist under such lamps. However, for the purpose of discussing color design, it seems that some color shifts do not cause serious problems unless one misjudges the hue and the tone of a color under observation. Then, what are the acceptable ranges of the correlated color temperature (Tcp) and the general color rendering index (Ra) of a light source for ordinary observation of surface colors? We studied theoretically and showed that the acceptable ranges are Ra≧70 for Tcp≧6000K or Ra≧80 for Tcp≧4000K. Under a light source within these ranges, one can judge the hue and the tone of a color adequately. We explained the computational procedure with graphic representation of the dependence of the color shift on the correlated color temperature and the general color rendering index of a light source.
