    A variety of analytical applications were developed using tris(β-diketonato)lanthanides. In addition to high coordination numbers and fast kinetics, their lanthanide centers have high Lewis acidities to form ternary complexes between mother lanthanide complexes and external substrates. Such ternary complexation offered anion selective electrode determination, naked-eye anion detection, near-infrared luminescence sensing of amino acids and separation of lanthanide compounds. These examples provided effective separation and analytical methods for current bioscience and medical applications based on common tris(β-diketonato)lanthanides.

    The cholesterol-armed cyclen Na(+) complex formed stable Langmuir monolayers at the air-water interface. The pi-A isotherm displayed a reasonable limiting molecular area of similar to 1.57 nm(2) and the areas expanded when amino acids were dissolved in water, indicating the efficient accommodation in the monolayers. Brewster angle microscopy (BAM) images exhibited almost no defects of the compressed Langmuir monolayers regardless of the presence of amino acids. Based on the idea that the increase in the limiting molecular areas corresponds to the amount of the adsorbed amino acid, the binding constants of three enantiomeric amino acids, namely valine (Val), leucine (Leu), and phenylalanine (Phe), were calculated at different surface pressures. Remarkably, a surface pressure dependent enantioselectivity of amino acid recognition was observed. Upon compression of the monolayers, the binding constants of amino acids increased accompanying an inversion of chiral selectivity from the D-to L-form in the case of Val and, conversely, from L-to D-form in the case of Phe.

    A series of pseudorotaxanes were formed by mixing a thread molecule and several crown ethers. Crystal structure analysis clearly indicated that hydrogen bonding between NH2+ of the thread molecule and crown ether oxygen atoms was significantly involved, together with cation-dipole interactions between cationic nitrogen and ether oxygen atoms. End-capping of the pseudorotaxane with chiral metal complexes gave dynamically capped rotaxanes including dibenzo-24-crown-8. This exhibited induced circular dichroism signals around the benzo-crown and anthracene-thread chromophore regions, while a chiral organic acid formed rotaxane exhibiting weaker signals.

    Photoluminescent properties of chalcobromide-capped octahedral hexarhenium(III) complexes with terminal bromide ligands [{Re(6)Q(8-n)Br(n)}Br-6](n-4) (Q = Se, n = 1 ([1-Se](3-)), n = 2 ([2a-Se](2-) and [2b-Se](2-)), and n=3 ([3-Se](-)); Q = S, n = 1 ([1-S](3-)), n = 2 ([2a-S](2-), [2b-S](2-), and [2c-S](2-)) were studied. The Q(7)Br capped complex [{Re(6)Q(7)Br}Br-6](3-) and Q(6)Br(2) [{Re(6)Q(6)Br(2)}Br-6](2-) (both D-3d and C-2 nu symmetric geometrical isomers) were successfully separated by column chromatography. All of the chalcobromide-capped complexes studied showed photoluminescence in both crystalline and solution phases. The emission maximum wavelength of the complexes at 296 K spans 853-915 or 868-968 nm in the crystalline phase or in acetonitrile, respectively. The selenobromide-capped complexes showed more intense emission as compared with the thiobromide analogues. The emission quantum yield (Phi(em)) and emission lifetime (tau(em)) became smaller and shorter, respectively, with an increase in the number of a capping bromide ligand in [{Re(6)Q(8-n)Br(n)}-Br-6](n-4). In the crystalline phase at 80 K, the emission maximum of the chalcobromide-capped complex shifted to the longer wavelength relative to that at 296 K. The emissive excited-state of the chalcobromide-capped hexarhenium(III) complexes was concluded to originate from the {Re(6)Q(8-n)Br(n)}(n+2) core with a spin-triplet type. The Phi(em) and tau(em) values of the {Re(6)Q(8-n)Br(n)}(n+2) complex were dependent significantly on the symmetry of the hexarhenium core, showing more intense emission for the complex with the higher symmetric core. A linear correlation between natural logarithm of the nonradiative decay rate constant and the emission maximum energy was observed for [{Re(6)Q(6)Br(2)}Br-6](2-).

    A series of tris(beta-diketonato)lanthanides with Yb(3+), Eu(3+), and Nd(3+) centers were characterized as luminescent sensing probes specific to glutamic acid, aspartic acid, and their dipeptides, which are important substrates involved in nervous systems, taste receptors, and other biological systems. In particular, tris(6,6,7,7,8,8,8-heptafluoro-2,2-dimethyloctane-3,5-dionato)ytterbium(III) exhibited a near-infrared emission around 980 nm in response to these biological substrates. Near-infrared-emissive complexes have several advantages over common luminescent probes; therefore, the proposed lanthanide complexes have potential analytical applications in proteomics, metabolics, food science, astrobiology, and related technologies.

    A series of oligopyridine ligands were derived from amino acid amides in which amide oxygen and ternary nitrogen atoms were combined with pyridine moieties. (1)H NMR and circular dichroism spectroscopic characterizations revealed that they formed stable Zn(2+) complexes in neutral aqueous solutions and caused Zn(2+) deficiency in the hepatic stellate cell systems. Since collagen synthesis was effectively promoted in the cells, the present oligopyridine derivatives worked as biocompatible ligands for Zn(2+) complexation and cell activation.

    A new series of N-3, O-mixed donor tripods was prepared for luminescent Eu3+ complexes, in which the soft quinoline nitrogen, tertiary amine nitrogen, and hard amide oxygen donors were cooperatively involved. The mixed donor tripods formed more stable 1 : 1 complexes with Eu( NO3)(3), La( NO3)(3) and Tb(NO3)(3) than the corresponding N-4 donor tripods, and their Eu3+ complexes particularly exhibited anion-responsive luminescence properties. NMR, UV, and luminescence spectroscopic characterizations revealed that -CH3 substitution on the tripod skeleton remarkably altered the preferred stoichiometry of the "tripod -Eu3+ - anion" ternary complex and gave anion-dependent europium luminescence. Although the disubstituted tripod preferred to form non-luminescent 2 : 1 ( tripod : Eu3+) complexes with Eu( NO3)(3) and other salts, it formed a luminescent 1 : 1 complex with EuCl3. Thus, this type of tripod offered Cl- anion- selective luminescence enhancement that was easily observed by the naked eye.
