Morphogenesis of extant colonial Scleractinia and their habitat information are crucial for understanding the palaeoenvironmental conditions for fossil equivalents. Scleractinian morphogenesis has been studied mainly in light of the external environmental factors. Very recently, it is clear that the colonial dendrophyllid Scleractinia bud under the specific internal regularities and exhibit a variety of growth forms. For the purpose of simulating colonial form variations according to the changes in internal factors, morphogenesis of dendrophylliid Scleractinia is modelled in consideration with these regularities of budding. The system “Coral Simulator”, which generates and visualizes the model of corallites, is developed. By regulating three parameters (the interval of budding, the budding orientation, and the inclination of budding) which affect the colonial morphology, various colonial forms are generated. In the simulated models, two apparently different types of morphologies of extant dendrophylliids are found. The volume, the projected area, and the centre of gravity of the individual models can be calculated easily by this system.

     More details

Marine sessile benthos living on hard substrates have evolved a variety of attachment strategies. Rhizotrochus (Scleractinia, Flabellidae) is a representative of azooxanthellate solitary scleractinians with a wide geographical distribution and unique attachment structures; it firmly attaches to hard substrates using numerous tube-like rootlets, which are extended from a corallum wall. In contrast, most sessile corals, whether extant or extinct, are attached by stereome-reinforced structures at their corallum bases. However, morphological and constructional traits of the rootlets themselves, along with their evolutionary significance, have not yet been fully resolved. Growth and developmental processes of spines in Truncatoflabellum and rootlets in Rhizotrochus suggest that these attachment structures are homologous. Both structures commonly develop from the calicular edges of walls through the transformation of wall structures, and their skeletal microstructures exhibit similar patterns of rapid accretion and thickening deposits. Taking molecular phylogeny and fossil records of flabellids into consideration, Rhizotrochus evolved from a common free-living ancestor and invaded hard-substrate habitats by the exploitation of rootlets originating from spines, which were adaptive for soft-substrates. Repeated evolution of attachment apparatuses in both scleractinian Rhizotrochus and extinct rugosans (e.g., Silurian Dokophyllum) is likely to represent evolutionary convergence. This study of attachment strategies in Rhizotrochus provides new insights into the understanding of not only the history of adaptive strategies of sessile benthos on changing substrates, but also the natures of soft tissues in extinct organisms.

We report a new discovery of Lower Triassic (Spathian) chert and siliceous claystone at two localities within the Mino terrane in the Mt. Funabuseyama area, central Japan. The two localities were thought to be underlain by the Hashikadani Formation, which is characterized by upper Lower to uppermost Permian siliceous rocks, representing deep-water facies that formed on the lower slope of an oceanic seamount and the surrounding ocean floor in the Panthalassa Ocean.
The Lower Triassic siliceous rocks occur close to upper Middle to upper Upper Permian chert and siliceous claystone. The neighboring Permian and Triassic siliceous rocks show identical facing directions. The close proximity of the exposures, lithologic affinities, and identical facing indicate that the Lower Triassic siliceous rocks rest upon the Upper Permian Hashikadani siliceous rocks and were primarily accumulated as part of a Permo-Triassic siliceous rock succession.
The inferred Permo-Triassic siliceous rock succession comprises (1) upper Middle to upper Upper Permian grayish chert with minor black chert in the upper part (ca. 20 m thick; Follicucullus scholasticus-F. ventricosus Zone to Neoalbaillella ornithoformis Zone) ; (2) uppermost Permian gray chert, including alternating black chert, greenish gray siliceous claystone, and black claystone (ca. 6-7 m thick; Neoalbaillella optima Zone) ; and (3) upper Lower Triassic rocks characterized by an upward increase in the proportion of grayish chert along with gray siliceous claystone and black claystone (thickness unknown; Spathian).
These new findings indicate that the stratigraphy and age of the Hashikadani Formation should be revised. Our data suggest that the accumulation of Permian siliceous sediments around a Panthalassic mid-oceanic seamount persisted until at least the late Early Triassic, across the Permo-Triassic boundary. The revised Hashikadani Formation has potential as an archive of long-term environmental changes in a mid-oceanic realm of the Panthalassa Ocean.

Sanbosan, Otani and Shingu complexes are distributed in Sanbosan area, Kochi Prefecture, southwest Japan, and they are tectonostratigraphically stacked up in descending order, with a gentle northwestward dipping. Sanbosan and Otani complexes belong to the Chichibu Terrane, and Shingu Complex to the Shimanto Terrane. Sanbosan Complex is considered to be formed during Late Jurassic, whereas Otani Complex during Early Cretaceous in age. Sanbosan Complex is mainly composed of clastic mudstones with limestones, greenstones and chert blocks of various sizes. White limestone lie tectonostratigraphically above the greenstones. In contrast, gray limestone blocks are included within the greenstones. Both white and gray limestone blocks characteristically contain Triassic scleractinian corals. The corals from gray limestones in faunal composition are similar to those of Ladinian-Carnian limestones from southern Tyrol in Italy, Hydra Island in Greece and New Pass of Nevada in USA. The corals from white limestone have a similarity to those of Norian-Rhaetian limestones from northern Alps in Austria and Julian Alps in Yugoslavia. Limestones of Sanbosan Complex are of seamount origin in Panthalassa. Coral rich limestones formed twice during Ladinian to Carnian for gray limestones and Norian-Rheatian for white limestones, respectively.
