Research subject summary

  • Disasters are uncommon and occur only once every few decades or a few hundred years, there is little scientific data available, and there are not enough measures to make use of this knowledge for disaster management. In this context, one goal is to estimate the maximum possible disaster event, to estimate the frequency by modeling the statistical features of disaster factors, and to predict the features of disasters that may occur in the future (which are now considered idiosyncratic but may become commonplace in the future). We also conduct basic research on the mechanism of transport phenomena, such as hydraulic experiments and simulations on the flow around structures and the forces acting on them, in order to reduce the damage from such disasters and improve the coastal environment.

     Recently, the climate has become extreme by the influence of global warming, and frequency of strong typhoon attack is getting increase. Particularly, storm surge disasters are influenced by intensified typhoons. The number of observations of storm surges are limited and insufficient because hazardous storm surges are low-frequency events. It is difficult to assess the probability of storm surges only based on observation data. This study simulates storm surges employing a stochastic typhoon model and a non-linear shallow water model, and proposes an empirical equation. Analysis assesses the effect of the number of data and the typhoon route on estimation accuracy by a proposed empirical equation targeting in Hiroshima (Aki-nada sea) and Matsuyama (Iyo-nada sea). As a result, errors and variations are reduced and the accuracy can be improved by increasing the number of data. Also, even if tropical cyclones have the same scale, storm surge are different by the difference of routes, which are dangerous semicircle and navigable semicircle. If compute the coefficient after classifying the routes, the proposed method can estimate storm surges of high accuracy at any locations.

     The characteristics of micro-barometric waves in Kyushu island estimated from analysis of high resolution stationary data was similar between each station. The propagation speed and direction was estimated based on cross-correlation analysis. Even if synoptic low-pressure development was similar, micro-barometric wave propagation process was different. Numerical simulation results show the possibility of significant meteorological tsunami caused by very small amplitude pressure waves, and importance of group wave characteristics, e.g. number of waves or wave length.

     The different temporal trend of tropical cyclone properties by each latitude has been shown based on analysis of representative value in each latitudinal band. Some variations of tropical cyclone properties are correlated to two oscillation indices of atmosphere and ocean interaction. The data of tropical cyclone was divided into two groups based on these results. Then representative scenarios for boundary conditions of storm surge simulation were estimated by using statistical approach. The phase change of tropical cyclone is not so large around three major bay, therefore the phase change of storm surge was also small. However, the change of tropical cyclone track caused local change of storm surge event in each bay.

    Understanding future changes of ocean waves and storm surges is important for assessing and mitigating the impact of climate on coastal, marine and ocean environments and on engineering problems. This paper reviews the latest research results of climate change impacts on coastal hazards in Japan. First, future changes of wave climate and storm surges based on MRI-AGCM ensemble experiments are summarized. Second, the applications of coastal hazard projections to coastal structures and beach profiles are summarized as a series of climate impact assessment projects. There are clear increases in extreme values of wave heights and storm surges in the tropical cyclone dominant regions around the middle latitudes of the Western North Pacific including Japan. The influence of future climate change on caisson breakwaters is discussed considering sea level rise, extreme wave conditions and storm surges targeting the Pacific side of Japan.

    In order to investigate interaction between upper and inside flow of a porous medium, the microscopic structure of upper and inside flow of the porous medium placed in oscillatory flow was measured by the Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) with the refractive index matching method. The strong shear flow was observed in the vicinity of the porous medium and the depth of shear flow varied with the phase of the oscillatory flow. The depth of non-dimensional shear flow was almost constant and independent with the Reynolds number. Besides, the phase difference of oscillatory flow between upper and inside flow of the porous medium was observed.

    The internal and external fluid flows induced by oscillatory flow over a porous medium were measured by the Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) with matching the refraction index method using two high-speed cameras. The characteristics of spatial variance of velocity components were shown in detail with the time phase variance. Further, the properties of the turbulent quantities such as turbulent kinematic energy and the Reynolds' stress were presented and the relationship among the turbulence properties, the Reynolds' number, and the KC number was discussed.

    The direction of sediment transport is one of important factors to manage sandy beaches. The prominent direction of sediment transport was estimated using grain size parameters such as the mean, sorting, skewness and roundness. They were obtained from digital images. The agreement between grain size distribution profiles by a sieving technique and by digital images is good. With decreasing of grain size diameter, grain shape becomes more round. Also distribution profiles of grain roundness are corresponding to normal distribution profiles. The prominent direction of sediment transport in Awaji Island has both southwest and northeast\. The significant level of Z-score increases by considering grain roundness.

    It has been discussed that intensity of typhoon may increase in the future due to climate change, resulting in severe coastal disasters. It is important to estimate the probable maximum magnitude of storm surges under the future climate for coastal disaster mitigation. In the present study, uncertainty of storm surge projection was discussed by employing the hundreds of different severe meteorological conditions generated by the potential vorticity inversion method. Ensemble numerical simulation results show the most hazardous typhoon track is different from most intense typhoon's one. Estimated maximum storm surge in the Tokyo bay was 1.4 m which is the same level as the historical highest record.

Calculation result on a pressure drop through circular cylinders is compared with the empirical formula by Ergun.     Authors have developed a new particle tracking velocimetry using path-line images without respite of exposure. A new detection method of coordinate of end-points path-lines is proposed in this paper. It is achieved by adding hue to the information of grayscale image captured by two cameras.     There is few research on fluid force acting on solids and turbulent flow in a pore of porous media because of the difficulty of measurement in experiments. In order to get fundamental knowledge of them, 2-D unidirectional fluid flow is investigated numerically using the Immersed Boundary method, which rigorously satisfies with the boundary condition on the solid surface with Cartesian grid and Lagrangian grid. Calculation results on pressure drop through circular cylinders reasonably agree with experimental formula by Ergun. In addition, fluid force acting on each cylinder, which varies markedly in time and space, is also presented.

    The modeling of turbulence for the flow passing through a porous media is analyzed experimentally by using a priori tests. Velocity field inside and around a porous media is obtained with PTV. Two turbulence models, linear eddy viscosity model and nonlinear model, are tested on different Reynolds number conditions. There is a high correlation in the turbulent stress and the nonlinear velocity gradient. The applicability of the latter model is higher than the former.     A new algorithm of a 3D particle tracking velocimetry, 3D-PLCV is developed. The significant feature is the use of images capturing path lines without any blind duration between sequential images. Hence, particle matching becomes very easy by connecting path lines in sequential images. Further, use of information of connected path line is useful to restrain generation of ghost tracers in stereo-matching. After description of details of the algorithm of the 3D-PTV developed in this study is presented, validity of the 3D-PTV is shown using artificial images. Finally, measurement result of fluid flow in pore of porous media by the developed PTV is presented.

    Turbulence in pores of porous media in oscillating flow was measured by using a Particle Tracking Velocimetry with the Refraction index matching method. Relationship between turbulent energy and oscillating flow characteristics such as the Reynolds number and KC number is presented. Variation of generated turbulent energy in pores and vicinity of porous media in a phase is presented in detail.

    The effect of oscillatory flow properties, the Reynolds number and the KC number, on turbulence generated by a porous media was investigated by hydraulic experiment. Violent turbulence was generated when interstitial velocity exceeded a critical level. Turbulent energy generated in pores increased as the Reynolds number increased. In a porous media, difference between minimum and maximum values of turbulent energy was increased as the KC number increased. And outside porous media, turbulent energy spread widely as the KC number increased. Under unsteady oscillatory flow, maximum turbulent energy was larger than that of unidirectional steady flow.

    A series of experiments for understanding hydraulic characteristics inside of artificial hollow reef was conducted. The mean velocity and turbulent components in the reef were measured by the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The dependence of wave characteristics are investigated for estimation of transmission coefficinets of the incident waves. The experimental data shows steady offshore current in the reef and indicates the downward flow into the mound of the reef.

    The effect of Reynolds number on the properties of turbulence generated by a porous media was investigated by a hydraulic experiment. Velocity field inside and around the porous media was measured with a high resolution temporally and spatially using the Super-resolution KC method and a refractive index matching method. It is presented that some properties of turbulence can be normalized by a characteristic velocity and a diameter of the sphere which constitute the porous media.

    屈折率整合法を用いた画像計測手法によって, 多孔質体の間隙部およびその上・下流部に及ぶ大領域を対象とした流速場を高時間解像度で計測し, さらに, 多孔質体の異なる断面で計測を行うことによって, 多孔質体内流れの準3次元構造の把握を試みた. 計測結果に基づいて, スペクトル, 乱流諸量を算定し, 流れの時・空間的変動特性について検討を行った. その結果, 断面毎に値の差異は見られたが, 分布形状は類似しており, 全断面平均値として多孔質体内部の乱流諸量を求めることができた. また, 異なる渦動粘性モデルを用いて多孔質体内外の渦動粘性係数を推定し, 定量的な比較を行った.

Outline of education staff

  • I will teach the current problems of urban engineering and how to acquire the ability to "research, discuss, and communicate" necessary for an engineer. In the Fundamentals of Mechanics and Mathematics for Urban Engineering, I will teach on the application of mathematics in urban engineering. In programming exercises, I teach specific techniques from the basics to the application of programming. Surveying is a fundamental technology for designing structures and surveying activities, and I will teach the specific method of surveying in my practical training. In the hydraulics exercise, we will teach computational methods for solving specific problems in hydraulics. In Experiment I for urban engineers, we will teach how to write a report on fluid mechanics, dealing with actual measurements and verification of the theory. In addition, I will teach hazard maps as a theme in the community disaster prevention course.
