     In order to estimate CO<sub>2</sub> budget in a salt marsh in urban coastal zone, 24-hour field investigations of air-sea and air-intertidal flat CO<sub>2</sub> fluxes were conducted at the north salt marsh at Osaka nanko bird sanctuary every season. CO<sub>2</sub> fluxes from intertidal flat to the atmosphere ranged from -16.4 to 5.8 mg/m<sup>2</sup>/min, but the fluxes of both absorption and emission were very small in winter. On the other hand, CO<sub>2</sub> fluxes from sea surface to the atmosphere ranged from -2.5 to 2.0 mg/m<sup>2</sup>/min. The variation trends of air-sea fluxes of every seasons were similar. Next, in order to examine the characteristics of CO<sub>2</sub> absorptions and emissions, the relationships between each fluxes and environmental factors were analyzed. It was found that CO<sub>2</sub> emissions from intertidal flat were related with mud temperature and air-sea CO<sub>2</sub> fluxes related with pH. It was confirmed that CO<sub>2</sub> absorptions of intertidal flat could be estimated by photon flux density and microalgal photosynthesis rates. Finally, CO<sub>2</sub> budgets were calculated in consideration of variability characteristic of fluxes and area of intertidal flat and sea surface. It was found that the north salt marsh at Osaka nanko bird sanctuary usually absorbed CO<sub>2</sub> from the atmosphere in all seasons (CO<sub>2</sub> absorptions were 49.5 kg/day in spring, 32.5 kg/day in summer, 7.5 kg/day in fall, and 12.3 kg/day in winter).

    It's important to understand the mixing effect of jet in density stratified field before applying water mixing technologies in actual site. In this study, we experimented on various types of stratified field and we measured the spatial distribution and temporal changes of density by using LIF method. The results of this study were as follows: (1) Entrainment parameter is affected only by velocity of jet. (2) Degradation of potential energy is affected by Froude number and initial potential energy of the field. We defined a new parameter including both Froude number and initial potential energy and it has a linear relation to the degradation of potential energy.

     Sea Bottom environment in ports and harbors becomes hypoxic or anoxic condition by formation of density stratification during summer season. It is necessary to understand the mixing effect of jet in density stratified field before applying water mixing technologies in actual site.<br> In this study, we carried out laboratory experiments on the water mixing under density stratified field and we measured the spatial distribution and temporal changes of density by using a LIF method. The results of this study were as follows: (1) It is suggested the possibility that the mixing effect will be able to be prediction by Richardson number about a jet acting on the density stratified field. (2) It is found that to supply a jet in such a way that the extent of the impact of jet becomes widely was effective for the relaxation of density stratified field.

    Mitigation of density stratification with jet was evaluated by using visualization experiments. First, we developed a simple and high accuracy image analysis method to estimate the spatial distribution of density of water. Then, we experimented on various types of stratified field changing Froude number of the jet. We verified that entrainment by jet and internal wave breakings are important to consider water mixing in density stratified fields. Furthermore, we defined the practical parameter including both the impact on the field and the potential energy of the field. The parameter has a linear relation to the volume of new layer formed after water mixing.

    A carbon dioxide meter with water-resistant breathable tube was developed in order to measure CO<sub>2</sub> concentration in water. Laboratory experiments were conducted for verification of the effectiveness of this method. After measuring the time variations of CO<sub>2</sub> concentration in water aerating by air pump or adding carbonic water, it was confirmed that this method was useful to evaluate the carbon cycle in coastal zone. Furthermore, the CO<sub>2</sub> production from sediment by decomposition of organic matter was confirmed by measuring the time variations of CO<sub>2</sub> and DO concentrations in the water above sediment at the same time.

    Field surveys and indoor experiments were conducted at the north tidal flat of Osaka Nanko bird sanctuary in 2012 in order to measure the amount of discharge of the carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2</sub>) which is an index of the amount of organic matter decomposition. The field survey revealed that CO<sub>2</sub> flux increased with decrease of the groundwater level when the bottom sediment emerged. The CO<sub>2</sub> flux in the submerged period showed 0.2-1.2 mgCO<sub>2</sub>/m<sup>2</sup>/min which was less than 1/5 to 1/40 of the emerged period. In addition, the result of field surveys together with indoor experiments suggested that CO<sub>2</sub> flux changed depending on the flood tide or falling tide as well as the groundwater level.

    Field surveys and laboratory experiments were carried out to prevent the outbreak of green tides at the north pond of Osaka Nanko bird sanctuary. Dense blooms of green algae, <i>Ulva pertusa</i>, <i>Ulva ohnoi</i> and <i>Rhizoclonium riparium</i> were frequently observed in 2005-2012 and the most dominant species gradually changed from <i>Ulva pertusa</i> to <i>Ulva ohnoi</i>, which is partly due to temperature increase and low salinity at a growing season. Laboratory experiments revealed that photosynthesis was inhibited when they were exposed to air for 6 hours at 35°C followed by a low salinity of 20psu. These results suggest the possibility of controlling green tides of <i>Ulva pertusa</i> and <i>Ulva ohnoi</i> by a combination of exposure to air with low salinity in summer

    Field surveys were carried out to clarify the effect of geographical features and currents on the distribution of green-tide forming seaweed, <i>Ulva ohnoi</i> at the artificial tidal flat of Hannan Second District in 2011-2012. Thalli of <i>Ulva</i> accumulated on the northern part of the flat due to the tidal current on the flood tide. In contrast, they did not move from the north to the south of the flat because of the slow current on the ebb tide. Wind-driven currents also acted as a factor for the accumulation of <i>Ulva</i> on the flat. The water route was thought to play an important role on the accumulation or dispersion of <i>Ulva</i> at the artificial tidal flat of Hannan Second District.

    It is important to evaluate the water mixing effect before applying water exchange technologies for resolving the pycnocline which causes some environmental problems. In this study, a new image analysis method was developed to estimate the spatial distribution of salinity for evaluating the water mixing effects in density stratified fluid. The effectiveness of developed image analysis was validated by comparing the estimated salinity with the measured salinity by salinometer. Furthermore, the water mixing effect for the case of supplying the surface water to the bottom in density stratified fluid was discussed by using the developed image analysis.

     Water temperature distribution in enclosed water area, especially from water surface to 0.5m under water surface, was measured with weather information, wind, solar radiation. Seasonal change of vertical thermal distribution including violent weather effect is presented.Based on the measurement data, latent heat flux and sensible heat flux are estimated. Moreover thermal diffusivity in the water surface layer with 0.5m depth is evaluated. Finally, thermal flux between water surface and atmosphere is discussed with considering thermal supply from deeper water to water surface.

    Numerical simulation and field investigation were carried out to examine reproducibility of thermal stratification using Regional Ocean Modeling System. Water temperature distribution was measured in enclosed water area with weather information. As a result of numerical simulation, it is found that fluctuation of thermal stratification such as destruction caused by fierce wind and development caused by solar radiation can be reproducible. Furthermore, according to calculation results of kinematic viscosity coefficient, it was indicated destruction of thermal stratification was strongly influenced by wind stress.

    A laboratory experiment using the water of the Doi river was carried out to propose a reaction model of hydrogen sulfide and dissolved oxygen. Effective supply method of oxygen-rich water into the river bottom was investigated for the purpose of remediation of severe hypoxic condition through a series of experiments using a density flow model combined with the proposed reaction model. It was found that hydrogen sulfide of bottom layer mixed by induced flow by density difference and reduced by oxidation reaction. Further, it was found that water supply from multiple points was effective for wide improvement of river water under the same total amount of supply water.

    To understand oxygen consumption characteristics of sediment for the case of oxygen supply to the bottom of sea under the hypoxic condition, we carried out a laboratory experiment by using sediment and artificial-seawater. It is found that the oxygen consumption pattern of sediment is changing while sediment consumes oxygen. Immediately after oxygen supplying, dissolved oxygen of seawater was consumed by the chemical reaction in the sediment. And then dissolved oxygen consumed by the biological reaction.

    Oxygen consumption by bottom sediment in a eutrophied port and harbor is modeled based on field investigation. The model consists of factors of biological contribution and chemical-physical contribution. It is presented that these factors can be estimated by water temperature and dissolved oxygen above the sea bottom. Through modeling sediment oxygen consumption it is found that a penetration depth of oxygen is a useful parameter to represent sea bottom environment as a remediation. Further, estimation method of penetration depth of oxygen is improved to take into the change of the dissolved oxygen above sea bottom consideration.

    A series of experiments for understanding hydraulic characteristics inside of artificial hollow reef was conducted. The mean velocity and turbulent components in the reef were measured by the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The dependence of wave characteristics are investigated for estimation of transmission coefficinets of the incident waves. The experimental data shows steady offshore current in the reef and indicates the downward flow into the mound of the reef.

    We have developed a new breakwater, named as VCF-Breakwater for generating vertical circulation flow which transports oxygen-rich surface water into the anoxic sea bottom.     In most of coastal zone, dissolved oxygen near the sea bottom decreases in summer season. It is important to supply oxygen to the anoxia sea bottom for habitat environment of benthos. A new breakwater for generationg vertical circulation flow (VCF) has developed for transporting oxygen-rich surface water to the sea bottom. Effectiveness of the breakwater on generating the flow has been already verified by experiments and numerical calculations. In this study, for evaluating the reaeration capacity of VCF, mass transfer coefficient of oxygen was measured by laboratory experiment. And, the relationship between reaeration characteristics and hydraulic characteristics of VCF were examined by using a numerical model.

    A new breakwater promoting vertical circulation flow and transporting oxygen-rich water to the sea bottom has been developed for improvement of the sea bottom environment. Effectiveness of the developed breakwater promoting vertical circulation flow has already been verified by the experiment with constant water depth. In this paper, effectiveness of the developed breakwater is investigated by large-scale experiments with different water depths. Consequently constructive improvement of the breakwater is examined through additional experiments. Furthermore, total volume of water mass transported into the sea bottom during one tide is estimated and presented as a quantitative index representing effectiveness of a promoting vertical circulation function of the proposed breakwater.
