Research subject summary

  • 近年の情報技術の発展には目を見張るものがあるが、そのなかで、光技術は、情報の取得・伝送・記録・加工・表示等の様々状況において活用され、大きな役割を担っている。情報の媒体としての光が持つ優れた特性を活用した新しい情報技術の開発を目指して研究を行っている。眼鏡などの装着物を必要とせず、人の立体視の生理的要因を満たした目に優しい３次元立体ディスプレイ装置の開発を行っている。体積走査型の立体ディスプレイの原理を考案し、立体表示システムの試作を行った。高速表示が可能な２次元ディスプレイを光学系の光軸に対して傾けて配置し、その像をミラースキャナにより高速に移動させることにより、目の残像作用を利用して３次元立体像を見ることができる。また、この立体表示システムに適合するような3次元シーンの取得システムの開発を目的として、光切断法や共焦点法等に基づいた実時間3次元光計測の研究を行っている。

    <p>Floating touch display systems, which allow touch interaction with a control panel formed as an aerial image by the user's finger, have the problem that the perceived depth position of the aerial image is uncertain, reducing operability. To overcome this problem, a semitransparent mirror is installed on the display device, which reflects light from the hand to form an aerial image of the hand using an optical imaging element. The coincident position between the actual fingertip and the fingertip of the optical image corresponds to the depth position of the aerial image. A prototype system of the floating touch display using a dihedral corner reflector array with the proposed visual feedback using a semitransparent mirror was constructed, and experiments were conducted using simple button operations to measure the accuracy of depth positioning in pointing tasks to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method.</p>

    A three-dimensional measurement scheme based on a time-of-flight method using a multi-aperture image capturing system is proposed. Temporal coding of exposure time for each aperture is individually provided by equipping an electronic shutter controller for every sub block of a pixel array in an image sensor. The measurement frequency is enhanced by capturing multiple temporally coded images simultaneously. The results of preliminary experiments for confirming measurement of the phase of optical signal modulated at a higher frequency than the frame rate of the image sensor are presented.

    In the conventional autostereoscopic display technique with a lenticular sheet was developed, as the depth distance of a three-dimensional (3D) image from the display increases, blurring of the 3D image increases. Furthermore, image position changes depending on observing position, and therefore a lenticular sheet is unsuitable to the interactive display, which is operated by visual interface like as touching the aerial image directly. In this report, we propose an aerial 3D display combined a lenticular sheet and a dihedral corner reflector array. This can form a 3D image at a fixed position in the air. Inconsistency between focus and binocular convergence can be alleviated. By combining a motion sensor for human hands, the interaction between the aerial image and the user is allowed, and an intuitive interface can be achieved.

In addition, Image formation in the air without any apparatus enhances reality for a displayed object and enables a novel visual interface technology that can operate a 3-D image with a pointing device or hands. Since volumetric display technique reported in this report displays an image by forming light points three-dimensionally distributed, the image has natural stereoscopic effect. Moreover, aerial imaging based on retro-reflection is free from distortion. In this report, volumetric display system using a dihedral corner reflector array and a rotating slanted mirror scanner and a technique for suppressing image blur in an aerial image formed by the retro-reflective imaging element are described as examples of researches on areal volumetric image formation.

    The image-capturing method with higher temporal sampling rate than frame rate of the image sensor using rolling shutter and compound eye imaging system is proposed. Although the pixel resolution of each images captured compound-eye image capturing system are decreased, it is possible to retrieve the spatial resolution from multiple low-resolution images on the basis of super-resolution processing. Appropriate spatial resolution and temporal resolution adaptable for movement in the scene can be provide by segmenting static regions and dynamic regions. The validity of the proposed method is confirmed by experiments of enhancement of temporal resolution and restoration of spatial resolution based on super-resolution technique using a prototype of the compound-eye imaging system.

    We propose a floating volumetric display system using a novel imaging element whose aperture is large and can be made easily at low cost. Diffuse rays in a horizontal direction for an observer are formed by a 90 prism sheet, which has a shape of an array of 90 V-grooves, as a result of twice total internal reflection. On the other hand, the diffuse rays in a longitudinal direction for the observer are formed by a linear Fresnel lens. A formed image by the proposed imaging element does not distort in the horizontal direction because the rays in the horizontal direction converge by retroreflection. The proposed imaging element can be produced easier than a conventional distortion-free imaging element and display a larger floating image. A floating three-dimensional image was displayed by a volumetric display system based on optical scanning of an inclined image plane. A position of a two-dimensional real image formed by the proposed imaging element was moved by an optical scanner at a faster rate than the duration time of persistence of vision.     Combining rolling shutter of a CMOS image sensor with compound lenses, we can get high frame rate for moving object. Moreover, by super-resolution processing with multiple images, we can retrieve the resolution for static objects, which is decreased because of the compound lens structure. Region segmentation by detecting movement is performed to separate regions that contain moving objects from stable objects. High frame rate processing and super-resolution processing are applied the dynamic regions and static region, respectively to give frame rate and resolution for each region adaptively.

    This research aims to develop an auto-stereoscopic display, which satisfies the conditions required for practical use, such as, high resolution and large image size comparable to ordinary display devices for television, arbitrary viewing position, multiple viewer availability, suppression of nonuniform luminance distribution, and compact system configuration. In the proposed system, an image display unit is illuminated with a direction-controlled illumination unit, which consists of a spatially modulated parallel light source and a steering optical system. The steering optical system is constructed with a slanted cylindrical array and vertical diffusers. The direction-controlled illumination unit can control output position and horizontal angle of vertically diffused light. The light from the image display unit is controlled to form narrow exit pupil. A viewer can watch the image only when an eye is located at the exit pupil. Auto-stereoscopic view can be achieved by alternately switching the position of an exit pupil at viewer's both eyes, and alternately displaying parallax images. An experimental system was constructed to verify the proposed method. The experimental system consists of a LCD projector and Fresnel lenses for the direction-controlled illumination unit, and a 32 inch full-HD LCD for image display. © 2014 SPIE-IS &amp

    A three-dimensional measurement scheme based on time-of-flight method using multi-aperture image capturing system, which can give temporally coded exposure for each aperture individually by programming shutter pattern for each block of pixel array is proposed. The measurement frequency is enhanced on the basis of compressive sensing technology by capturing multiple temporally coded images simultaneously. The results of preliminary experiments are presented to confirm measurement of the phase of a light signal modulated at a higher frequency than the frame rate of the image sensor.

    A volumetric display that creates a distortion-free three-dimensional (3D) image in midair is described. The proposed system consists of rotating prism sheets used as an optical scanner and a dihedral corner reflector array (DCRA), which is a distortion-free imaging element. Two prism sheets are arranged in a symmetrical configuration to reduce an unnatural motion parallax caused by optical aberrations. A cross-section of the 3D image is formed by the DCRA in midair and moved by the rotating prism sheets to create a 3D displayable space.     We propose to use a rotational optical scanning method for a volumetric three-dimensional (3D) display based on optical scanning of an inclined image plane. The image plane was moved by an image rotator and formed by a dihedral corner reflector array, which is a distortion free imaging element forming a real image at a plane-symmetrical position. A stack of the moved and formed image planes of a two-dimensional (2D) display created displayable space of a 3D image, which satisfies all the criteria of stereoscopic vision and can be seen by the naked eyes. The image rotator used in this study was constructed of prism sheets and planar mirrors. The image plane was moved rotationally by rotating the proposed image rotator on an axis parallel to the mirror plane. Enlargement of the displayable space is achieved by just extending the distance between the 2D display and the mirror, so that the proposed scanning method is effective to display a large 3D image for our volumetric display system. We made a prototype display and observed a moved image plane to measure the displayable space of the 3D image. The size of the displayable space was 1200 [cm(3)] that is approximately six times as large as our previous display using a translational optical scanning method.

    The aim of this research is to develop a full-parallax auto-stereoscopic display system, which can generate a floating three-dimensional (3-D) image viewable from a surrounding area. A 3-D display method based on the combination of integral imaging, 360-degree scanning with a rotating mirror, and imaging in the air with a concave mirror is proposed. A scanning system is composed of a hemisphere concave mirror and a mirror scanner, which is located around the center of the concave mirror. By putting an image generated by an integral imaging system into the scanning system, a floating stereoscopic image can be formed around the center of the concave mirror. When the mirror scanner rotates and the image on the integral imaging system is switched in accordance with mirror angle, each directional image can be observed from each viewing angle. The feasibility of the proposed method was examined by preliminary experiments. The abilities of generation of a floating full-parallax image and a floating auto-stereoscopic image with 360-degree viewing angle are demonstrated. © 2012 Copyright Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE).

    We developed a volumetric display that uses a rotating prism sheet for scanning and a dihedral corner reflector for imaging. Since mechanical load to rotate a prism sheet is less than the load to drive a galvanometer scanner, a rotating prism sheet can scan a larger area than a galvanometer scanner. A dihedral corner reflector forms an image in the air. We developed a prototype volumetric display and displayed a volumetric image that has a size of approximately 5[cm]×5[cm]×5[cm].

    Experimental results of a volumetric display system based on three-dimensional (3D) scanning using an inclined image are reported. An optical real image of an inclined two-dimensional (2D) display device is moved laterally by an optical mirror scanner. Inclined cross-sectional images of a 3D object are projected in accordance with the position of the image plane. A 3D real image is formed as a stack of 2D cross-sectional images as a result of high-speed scanning. This 3D image can satisfy all the criteria for stereoscopic vision. An experimental system using a galvanometer mirror and a digital micromirror device was constructed, and generated three-dimensional images consisting of 1024x768x200 voxels. A multilevel image can be formed by a spatial dithering technique, even though the binary display device was used.

    A volumetric display system using a roof mirror grid array (RMGA) is proposed. The RMGA consists of a two-dimensional array of dihedral corner reflectors and forms a real image at a plane-symmetric position. A two-dimensional image formed with a RMGA is moved at thigh speed by a mirror scanner. Cross-sectional images of a three-dimensional object are displayed in accordance with the position of the image plane. A volumetric image can be observed as a stack of the cross-sectional images by high-speed scanning. Image formation by a RMGA is free from aberrations. Moreover, a compact optical system can be constructed because a RMGA doesn't have a focal length. An experimental volumetric display system using a galvanometer mirror and a digital micromirror device was constructed.     A new experimental volumetric display system based on inclined-image scanning is reported. A volumetric image is formed as a stack of about one hundred cross-sectional images. A high-speed video interface apparatus for controlling a digital micromirror device, which displays the cross-sectional images, is introduced to achieve real-time updating of volumetric images. The cross-sectional images of a three-dimensional (3D) object are generated from a depth map of the 3D polygon surface model within a video frame rate.     A novel technique for acquiring time-sequential images during a frame-capture period of an ordinary CMOS image sensor using a multi-lens optical system is proposed. In addition, this system is utilized for high-speed three-dimensional measurement based on a spatial encoding method. In the proposed image capturing system, multiple lenses are rhomboidally arranged on a CMOS image sensor to detect multiple images for one object. Because pixel values in the CMOS image sensor are obtained sequentially, we can obtain multiple images that are captured at different timing. In the spatial encoding method, several kinds of optical patterns are projected to a measured object. It is possible to obtain multiple images in which different patterns are projected to the object within one frame period by dividing the captured images and reconstruct images from rearrange the parts of image. The principle of the proposed method was verified by three-dimensional measurement with a CMOS compound-eye image capturing. The size of the three-dimensional image was 360 × 270 pixel, and the number of steps of distance was 64, and the measurement time was 1/15 seconds. © 2009 SPIE-IS&amp

    We propose alignment-free optical modules using a solder-bump-bonding technique for constructing free-space optical interconnection systems without a special alignment procedure. Bonding pads for mounting an optoelectronic device chip are fabricated by exposing a photosensitive resin film to light traveling through the optical system of the module so that the image positions of the bonding pads on both image planes of the optical interconnection system are aligned with each other. A device chip is mounted by solder-bump bonding and is set at a proper position by the surface tension of molten solder.     A three-dimensional image retrieval method from a compound-eye image degraded by low-resolution sampling and defocusing is proposed. The three-dimensional profile of a target object is acquired from parallax images captured by a compound-eye imaging system. The compound-eye imaging is modeled by ray tracing to relate the pixels on the three-dimensional surface of the object to the pixels of an image sensor. A high-resolution three-dimensional image can be reconstructed by minimizing the difference between the captured image and the image calculated by ray tracing of the modeled composed-eye imaging.     Studies on volumetric three-dimensional (3-D) displays are reviewed briefly. A volumetric display method based on 3-D scanning of an inclined image, developed by the author, is introduced. An optical image of a two-dimensional (2-D) display placed obliquely in an optical imaging system is moved laterally by a mirror scanner. Inclined cross-sectional images of a 3-D object are displayed on the 2-D display in accordance with the position of the image plane to form a volumetric image. The three-dimensional images formed by this display system satisfy all the requirements for stereoscopic vision. Experimental results of 3-D imaging achieved by a volumetric display system using a digital micromirror device are presented. Research for improving the practical performance of the volumetric display, such as realizing real-time volumetric imaging from 3-D measurement data and forming volumetric directional images and 3-D fluorescent images, is presented.

    Volumetric display systems based on three-dimensional (3-D) scanning of an inclined image are reported. An optical image of a two-dimensional (2-D) display device, which is placed obliquely in an optical imaging system, is moved laterally by an optical mirror scanner. Inclined cross-sectional images of a 3-D object are displayed on the 2-D display device in accordance with the position of the image plane. A locus of the moving image can be observed as a series of moving afterimages as a result of high-speed scanning. A 3-D real image is thus formed as a stack of 2-D cross-sectional images. This 3-D image can satisfy all the criteria for stereoscopic vision. A three-dimensional image consisting of 1024 x 768 x 150 pixels was formed by the constructed system using a digital micro mirror device. In addition, we propose a 3-D image transmission system, which can acquire the 3-D information of an object and display it as a volumetric image in real time. We constructed a high-speed 3-D measurement system based on the light-section method using an intelligent vision system, which can capture and process 1000 images per a millisecond. We demonstrate real-time volumetric image generation from the measured profile using the 3-D measurement system and the volumetric display system.

    A volumetric display technique that uses fluorescence excited by a single infrared beam is proposed. A convergent laser beam is used to activate ions locally around the focal point. Three-dimensional scanning by the focal point is achieved by moving an inclined image plane in the direction perpendicular to an optical axis. Preliminary experimental results of three-dimensional image generation in an Er3+-doped fluoride glass excited by a laser beam of 810 nm wavelength are presented. © 2005 Optical Society of America.

    <p>Optics based on hierarchical structures continues to advance by fusion with other technologies and subdivision into increasing specializing fields. Basic research on new functional materials based on metamaterials and plasmonics is essential. New ultrafast nanosize optical and electronic devices with high density and low power are expected to be developed. Simultaneously, devices acting as interfaces between nanosize elements and macro circuits must be also improved. Through the realization of optical memories and advanced spatial phase modulators using the above devices, new generation optical computer, 3D display and functional optical measurements are expected to be realized. Meanwhile, with improvements of studies on human sciences, it is expected that new fields combining human sciences and medical photonics would be developed with advanced optics.</p>

    In a conventional autostereoscopic display with a lenticular sheet, blurring of a three-dimensional (3D) image increases as the depth distance of the 3D image from the display increases. In addition, the 3D image position changes depending on observing position. In this report, we propose an aerial 3D display combined multiview dispay with a lenticular sheet and floating image formation with a dihedral corner reflector array. This method can form a 3D image at a fixed position in the air with the simple composition. By combining a motion sensor for human hands, the interaction between an aerial image and a user is allowed, and an intuitive interface can be achieved.

    Combining rolling shutter of a CMOS image sensor with compound lenses, we can get high frame rate for moving object. Moreover, by super-resolution processing with multiple images, we can retrieve the resolution for static objects, which is decreased because of the compound lens structure. Region segmentation by detecting movement is performed to separate regions that contain moving objects from stable objects. High frame rate processing and super-resolution processing are applied the dynamic regions and static region, respectively to give frame rate and resolution for each region adaptively.

    【課題】三次元形状測定装置において、撮像所要時間を短縮すると共に、被写体表面の反射率の分布に関わらず正しく三次元情報を取得する。

    【解決手段】三次元形状測定装置は、２種類のスリットパターンＳａ、Ｓｂを切替えて照射するパターン照射装置と、被写体Ｐを撮像する複眼撮像装置と、撮像された画像情報から空間コード情報を取得する電子回路とを備える。複眼撮像装置は、同一平面上に配置された２つの光学レンズを有する光学レンズアレイと、各光学レンズにより形成される２つの個眼像Ａ、Ｂを撮像する固体撮像素子８と、個眼像Ａ、Ｂを１シャッタ動作内で時間差をもって順に読出すローリングシャッタ装置９を備え、パターン照射装置は、ローリングシャッタ装置９が１シャッタ動作を行う間にスリットパターンＳａ、Ｓｂを順に切替える。各個眼像Ａ、Ｂには、それぞれスリットパターンＳａ、Ｓｂによって空間が明暗に分割された被写体Ｐの像が形成される。
