During strong winds, flat-plate roofs are expected to oscillate up and down. In this study, to investigate the relationship between unsteady wind forces and flow field around an oscillating flat-plate roof, first, three-dimensional forced vibration test is performed in a wind tunnel. Next, the ability of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with an overset mesh to simulate the flow around the oscillating roof is validated by comparing numerical results with those of the wind tunnel tests. Finally, coherent structures in the fluctuating wind pressure and velocity fields around the oscillating roof, extracted using complex proper orthogonal decomposition (CPOD), are discussed.

<p> Flat-plate roofs are expected to oscillate up and down during strong winds. When a structure is oscillating, unsteady wind forces acting on it are affected by interactions between displacement and the flow. Aerodynamic instabilities such as vortex-induced vibrations can arise depending on the shape and dynamic characteristics of the structure. To date, these unsteady wind forces acting on large cantilevered roofs and the characteristics of wind-induced oscillation have been investigated using forced vibration tests and aerodynamic vibration tests in two dimensions.</p><p> Recently, as computer performance has improved, it has become possible to perform transient simulations of the flow around three-dimensional structures using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). CFD is capable of simultaneous and detailed investigation of three-dimensional wind pressure and velocity fields, which are difficult to investigate in conventional wind tunnel experiments. It is particularly suited for application to the unsteady wind forces caused by the interactions between an oscillating structure and the flow. However, the computational accuracy of surface pressures on oscillating structures simulated by three-dimensional CFD has rarely been examined.</p><p> The objective of the present study is to examine the relationship between unsteady wind forces and flow field around an oscillating flat-plate roof in detail using CFD. First, three-dimensional forced vibration test is carried out in a wind tunnel. The results confirm that there is a negative damping force on the roof when the non-dimensional frequency of the roof is relatively low. Moreover, the unsteady wind force on the roof varies depending on the cross section.</p><p> Next, the effectiveness of CFD with an overset mesh to simulate the flow around the oscillating roof is validated by comparing the numerical results with those of the wind tunnel tests. CFD is shown to be capable of approximating the wind tunnel results if the mesh range of the dependent region and the mesh resolution at the boundary between the master region and dependent region are set appropriately.</p><p> Finally, by applying complex proper orthogonal decomposition (CPOD) to the simultaneous wind pressure and velocity fields obtained in fine detail by CFD, the coherent structure of the fluctuating wind pressure field and the three-dimensional wind velocity field around an oscillating roof is extracted. CPOD is an effective technique for extracting any coherent structures in multivariate data and discussing the characteristics of various related phenomena. This analysis shows that the harmonic components of the unsteady wind force are caused by two-dimensional vortex shedding from windward edge of the roof when the non-dimensional frequency of the roof is relatively high. While, a negative damping force arises by the harmony of the roof oscillation and the three-dimensional vortex shedding when the non-dimensional frequency of the roof is relatively low.</p>

In the previous study by the present authors, wind loads on the flat plate roof above a stand had been examined with wind tunnel experiments and Large
Eddy Simulation (LES) which is expected to be used as a tool for the wind-resistant design of buildings. However, the computed and experimental results of
the minimum peak pressure near the corner edge of the roof had not coincided with each other, where the wind blew diagonally for the model. In this paper,
the peak pressures evaluated by using LES with high-resolution models are compared with the experimental results as statistics of wind pressures. And the
fluctuating wind pressure fields are examined by using complex proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). Furthermore, the wind pressure distribution on the
flat plate roof is evaluated in detail by using LES and coherent structures in the fluctuating wind pressure fields are discussed by using complex POD analysis.

Generally the wind loads on large span structures with a dome roof or free-standing canopy roof have been investigated by using wind tunnel experiments. However, in the case where wind pressures on isolated thin structures such as flat plate roofs are measured by using tubes, it is necessary to install the parts for storing tubes in the experimental model.<br> On the other hand, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is expected to be used as one of the methods except for wind tunnel experiments. CFD has enabled us to simulate without any physical restrictions on the experimental model. For wind-resistant design of buildings, it is required to predict accurately the peak wind loads, and the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) effective in obtaining approximately equivalent evaluation of wind loads on the buildings in urban areas to the results obtained in wind tunnel experiments. However, there are few studies on the evaluation of wind loads for large span structures using LES. In the case where wind loads on large span structures are estimated by using LES, it is required to reproduce appropriately the unique phenomenon such as conical vortices near the corner edge of the roof. In the previous study on LES for the flat plate roof model, although the present authors presented that it is possible to estimate the wind loads equivalent to the experimental results by using LES, the computed and experimental results of the minimum peak pressure near the corner edge of the roof did not coincide with each other, where the wind blew diagonally for the model.<br> The validation of the results of CFD against experimental results has been carried out by comparing statistics of wind pressure coefficients for each sampling point in general. On the other hand, wind pressures on each part of structures fluctuate with some correlation mutually. It is important for CFD to simulate the fluctuating pressure field equivalent to that of the wind tunnel experiment. Because it involves improving credibility of consideration on fluid fields, comparison of fluctuating wind pressure fields is significant and is one of the validations of the CFD results.<br> In this study, first, focusing on the experimental case that strong wind pressure occurs on the roof, examined are the computational conditions for reproducing this pressure by using LES. Validation of LES results is performed in terms of both statistics of wind pressure coefficients at each measuring point and fluctuating wind pressure fields obtained by using complex Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) analysis. As a result, shown are the appropriate computational conditions and boundary conditions, which enable accurate evaluation of the conical vortices and related minimum peak pressure near the corner edge of the flat plate roof. Moreover, also proposed, is the technique which is valid as a method of evaluating the coincidence quantitatively for the correlation of fluctuating pressure fields.<br> Second, based on the computational conditions obtained the most accurate results in the above examination, wind pressure distribution on the flat plate roof is evaluated in detail by using LES for the original structure model excepted the parts for storing tubes. As a result, it is confirmed that the wind pressure which has the peak wind pressure coefficient of -14.0 and the peak wind force coefficient of -15.5 acts near the corner edge of the roof due to the conical vortices. Furthermore, coherent structures in the fluctuating wind pressure fields are examined by using complex POD analysis, and the relationship between the behaviors of the conical vortices and pressure fluctuation is discussed by using the visualization of computational results.

Solar power plant on roofs is attracting attention in recent years. In fact, there are gradually increasing numbers of such efforts. In such a case, the attention should be drawn to the wind loads for not only the photovoltaic panels mounted on a roof but also the roof itself. The net wind loads acting on the roof fastener may exceed the design wind loads for the roof without PV panels. This paper investigates the peak wind force coefficients of panels mounted on roofs. The minimum wind force coefficients of the PV panels have almost the same value in various panel layouts. Since the wind loads acting on the roof under PV panels are larger than the wind loads which are generally used by designers, it is necessary to consider the severe wind forces for all over the roof as same as the edge area of the roof.

Wind force coefficients for the PV arrays in the sloping ground was measured by the wind tunnel experiment. When an array was installed in a slope, a wind loads are increasing. And the load reduction effect of the windward array may be unable to expect. The increasing wind loads will be covered by the wind force coefficients of JIS C 8955 by using both the angle of the array and the inclination angle of the ground.

In recent years, the large-scale power generations using photovoltaic arrays (Mega solar) are spreading quickly. Although the ground installation type of the Mega solar was main, since the flatland in which large-scale installation of photovoltaic arrays are possible has decreased gradually, it is thought that the installation to a slope will also progress from now on. Then, the wind tunnel experiment using a photovoltaic array model was conducted for the two-dimensional slope, and wind force coefficient which acts on the panel was investigated. Part 1 reports the results about wind velocity distribution around slopes in experiments.

To request the design wind loads for the components and claddings by the wind tunnel experiment, it is important to evaluate the spacing averaged wind pressure. However, it is not examined to slender rectangle tributary are like the folded-plate roof. The tributary area is growing by the same width of finding. Then, the evaluation method of the peak value for such a long and slender material is proposed. The evaluation method of using the model of a simple beam leads the peak wind pressure coefficient based on the response of the material. The usual averaging method undervalues the peak coefficients, it was necessary to divide the peak coefficients.

The POD analysis is effective to reveal coherent structures from a random phenomenon. However, the phenomenon with an advection cannot be expressed by mono-mode of the POD analysis. The wind pressure fields around structures in flows are accompanied in general by advections. For such a case, complex POD analysis is effective. In this paper, the pressure fields around a square-sectioned prism in flows were investigated by the complex POD analysis. As a result, two principal modes, symmetrical and anti-symmetrical modes, are obtained in the case of both of flows. The anti-symmetrical mode expressed the fluctuating wind pressure fields due to the vortex shedding, and the properties were greatly different according to the incident flow. Moreover, the feature of the symmetrical mode was shown, and the relation to the anti-symmetrical mode was discussed.

This paper describes peak wind pressure coefficients on a building-high double-skin. Mean pressure coefficients are different with each other between the outer and the inner skins in the cavity near the opening. Since the internal pressure in the cavity cannot be estimated only from the wind pressure on the inner skin, the net peak force across the outer skin is led from difference to pressures of outside and inside of the outer skin. The force coefficients are almost constant over the inside skin in the cavity. The strong negative peak wind force coefficients on the outside skin appear near the opening.

A new method of fatigue assessment for building cladding is described in this paper. The method products realistic time series of pressure in terms of variation of the wind velocity and direction through the pass of a model-typhoon and pressure measurements on a low building in a turbulent boundary layer wind tunnel. The realistic fatigue index of any cladding during a design typhoon can be influenced by the position of an interest cladding and the orientation of the building, even though the identified typhoon attacks to the identified building. It is significant to consider the fatigue limit state for cladding instead of the strength designing, because many wind damage to cladding might occur from fatigue degradation.

This report shows the wind force characteristics which acts on balcony handrails of condominium under natural wind condition. As the results, the large wind pressure force acts on the balcony handrails at the corner part, and uniformly distributed of the height direction. The mean wind force coefficient which acts on balcony handrails showed that it was possible to evaluate at the inclination of the straight line which envelops peak wind pressure force to the maximum dynamic pressure. It proposed the evaluation method of peak wind force coefficient of the balcony handrail which considered a phenomenon under the natural-wind for the design.

This paper describes some problems for the evaluation method of peak wind pressure coefficients on a flat roof. The pressure distribution on a roof is different from that on a wall, although the same factors of the decay factor and the representative area are usually used to evaluate the appropriate pressure coefficients. This tributary area for evaluation the coefficients of a roof are smaller than that area of wall. Furthermore, the peak value evaluated from the moving average method was often smaller than the value from the spacing average method. Therefore, the averaging time for general part rather than the corner part is decided by using the decay factor k of 4.5. The suitable averaging time for the corner part should be selected significantly lager than the averaging time for general part.

This paper describes the detailed investigation of the peak wind force coefficient on the balcony handrail of a building. As the result of the field measurements with a large-sized building model, it is found that the strong wind force acted on the balcony handrail in each corner of the building. The area that wind force becomes strong is almost twice the vertical width, not horizontal, of the balcony from the edge of each corner. In addition, it shows how to convert the peak wind force coefficient into the suitable present coefficient, in case the wind measurements in the field differ from the wind assumed on the present criteria. Moreover, it turned out that the formerly reported method to estimate the peak wind force coefficient of the balcony handrail in each corner of the building by the wind pressure coefficient of the external wall is effective also in the field measurements.

This paper describes how to plan the emergency operation against wind disasters such as tornadoes as well as how to improve the response capabilities for local governments. The authors investigated some Local Disaster Management Plans documented by many prefectures and traced the response action of Saga City just after the occurrence of the tornado in 2004. It is recommended that the use of the tornado watch/warning system by the Japan Meteorological Agency should be included in the emergency management plan. Furthermore, key facilities which are necessary for maintaining the response action during severe events should be protected perfectly.

When cladding on a windward wall of a building is broken by a severe storm, the internal pressures may be rapidly increased. The sudden increase of the internal pressure is mentioned as &ldquo;Aerodynamic Overshoot&rdquo;, which may cause further damage to other cladding and interior components. This paper investigates the estimation of Overshoot-ratio using a non-dimensional parameter that characterizes the Overshoot phenomenon. This parameter is defined by using the wall opening area, the internal volume of the building, the incident wind speed and the pressure-loss coefficient of an opening. A result of field measurements suggests that the Overshoot-ratio has the values of 1.1 to 1.2 for usual size buildings. As a result, design wind loads for components and cladding on a building should be decided by using the peak internal pressure coefficient of 1.0 in order to prevent the expansion of damage caused by a wall breakages.

Although there have been a number of studies investigating the flows and pressures on a cube using wind tunnel experiments and numerical simulations, there have only been a few actual field experiments conducted. The results of these previous experiments have helped us to clarify the characteristics of surface pressures or wind flows on or around a cube. However, almost all these studies focus on either pressure or flow field only. In this study, a field experiment was arranged where the pressure and flow measurements were carried out simultaneously with a 2.4 m cube on the ground. The velocity field of the approaching flow was observed with a number of anemometers arrayed around the cube that was located in an open area of reclaimed land. The three-dimensional characteristics of the turbulent flows and the fluctuating surface pressures on the cube were examined. (C) 2007 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Strong wind disasters has not yet been fully recognized, but they has very higy instantaneous wind speed and bring the heavily damage. The purpose of this paper is to show the necessity for improving recognition level of strong wind disasters including tornado. We examined the response and rehabilitation for the tornado disaster at SAGA Prefecture in 2004. The study has shown the importance of two features. The first is the necessity of early warning system which can communicate to people in another area with Emergency call immedeately after tornado disasters. The second is the importance of "no damage for the pubic facilities at strong wind disasters".

The wind pressure on a building fluctuates complicatedly in both time and space. It is important to understand the characteristics of the wind pressure fluctuation to estimate wind forces on buildings.
The complex POD (Proper Orthogonal Decomposition) analysis is the method of aiming to estimate the principal structure of wind pressure fluctuation. The complex POD analysis is the complex eigenvalue problem of the space covariance in the pressure field. In this paper, the complex POD analysis is applied to the fluctuating wind pressure on a 2-dimensional rectangular cylinder and the result is compared with the results of primary POD analysis. By this comparison, the characteristics of the complex POD analysis are clarified.

This study investigates the evaluation of wind load on flat roof by probabilistic method. Wind pressure fluctuations obtained by wind-tunnel test are approximated by Weibull distribution. The probability of exceedance is calculated with this approximation. The probability of exceedance of Recommendation for Loads on Buildings (RLB) values isexamined and it shows their probabilities, which are 0.17% theoretically, exceed 10%. This implies a risk of RLB values. Then the roof pressure coefficients when an opening is made on the wall are investigated. The values at 0.17% of probability are estimated as -7.4 at the corner and -2.5 at the center. As far as these raised values are considerd at the designing, the roof would retain the same reliability as before even after unexpected breakage occurred on the wall.

The flow around the two dimension circular cylinder is a classical problem of fluid dynamics, and many results were reported by the wind tunnel experiments. However, there are a number of unclarified points about the flow of a cylinder in natural winds. We set up a circular cylinder that was 630mm in the deameter and 5m in height in innings in the Osaka Bay. This report suggests the wind characterestic of the circular cylinder in natural winds. As a result, we found that the drag coefficient became small decreasing in the Reynolds number, when the Rynolds number was smaller than 3*105. And so the drag coefficient was constant though the Reynolds number changed, when the Reynolds number was larger than 3*105. In addition, result of analyzing stability of wind direction in natural winds, an effective evaluation method was obtained.

This paper describes the detailed investigation of the wind load acting on the balcony handrail of buildings. As the results of the wind tunnel test with three kinds of building models, the wind load of the balcony handrail was very small at almost all areas except the corner area of building and the peak wind force coefficients were less than 1.0. And the wind load was rapidly increased in the corner of the building. In this wind tunnel test, the maximum of the peak wind force coefficients of the balcony handrail in the corner area became about 3.0. Moreover, the method was proposed that estimates the peak wind force coefficient of the balcony handrail in the building corner by the wind pressure coefficient of the external wall. And the compatibility of the method was investigated.

In order to clarify characteristics of temporal-spatial flow structures above and wind pressures on the roof of a cubic structure, a wind tunnel experiment was carried out in two types of turbulent boundary layers. The flow was measured by Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system and simultaneous multi-pressure measurements on the surface were also performed. The time-averaged separation bubble on the roof had flat shape with a gradual curvature. When the intensity of turbulence of the approaching flow was large, and strong local negative pressure was generated in the windward edge corner, a flat conical vortex was formed, and the spatial structure of the flow was different from the time-averaged flow.

This study investigates the evaluation of wind load on flat roof by probabilistic method. Wind pressure fluctuations obtained by wind-tunnel test are approximated by Weibull distribution. The probability of exceedance is calculated with this approximation. The probability of exceedance of Recommendation for Loads on Buildings (RLB) values is
examined and it shows their probabilities, which are 0.17% theoretically, exceed 10%.

This paper deals with conical vortices on a flat roof of a lowrise building when the incident flow is for oblique angle. A flow visualization technique is devised and presented that uses the inside space of the model as a mist reservoir. Flow patterns on a flat roof are investigated by means of flow visualizations with laser sheets and a strobe light. It is clarified that the sway of conical vortices is induced by the switching of vortices formed by separating flow. Also the exist of two pairs of vortices extended from the vertexes of the roof is pointed out.
