    The crystal structure of osumilite is characterized by channel-like cavities that are composed of double six-membered rings along the <b><i>c</i></b>-axis, which is similar to the channels of beryl and cordierite. Beryl and cordierite generally include water molecules in the channel, and these have been extensively investigated using mainly infrared (IR) spectroscopy. Two major types of water molecules have been determined, however, the water molecules in the channel-like cavities of osumilite have not been reported. Polarized IR absorption spectra of water molecules in osumilite are presented here. The polarized IR absorption spectra of oriented osumilite that was hydrothermally treated at 600 &deg;C and under 100 MPa for 72 h revealed three pairs of split peaks with equivalent intensity. They can be assigned to &nu;<sub>3</sub>-I and &nu;<sub>1</sub>-I (3651 cm<sup>-1 </sup>and 3554 cm<sup>-1</sup>), &nu;<sub>3</sub>-II<sub>a</sub> and &nu;<sub>1</sub>-II<sub>a</sub> (3635 cm<sup>-1 </sup>and 3601 cm<sup>-1</sup>), and &nu;<sub>3</sub>-II<sub>b</sub> and &nu;<sub>1</sub>-II<sub>b</sub> (3603 cm<sup>-1 </sup>and 3551 cm<sup>-1</sup>) as well as water molecules in the channels of cordierite and beryl.

    The mineralogy and chemistry of aquifer sediments of As-contaminated groundwater in Sonargaon, Bangladesh were analyzed to identify the host phases of As and to understand release mechanism of As into the groundwater. Sequential chemical extraction revealed that the As was mostly fixed in silicate(s). Iron oxyhydroxides/oxides were produced via chemical weathering of basic minerals at depths where the redox conditions experience seasonal changes with the groundwater level. The Fe&ndash;oxyhydroxides/oxides are not effective adsorbents of dissolved As at that depth. A significant amount of As, together with Si, Al, Mg, and Fe, was extracted by oxidation-decomposition of the silicates during a sequential chemical extraction process, indicating that chemical weathering of As-bearing silicate(s), which mostly occurs under oxic aqueous conditions, results in As dissolution in nature. Since chlorite is the only silicate that includes As in the aquifer sediments (Masuda <i>et al.</i>, 2012a), chlorite decomposition in oxic groundwater is the most plausible mechanism of As release into the groundwater from aquifer sediments in the study area.

    Three basic minerals, biotite, chlorite and amphibole, were mineralogically and chemically examined to specify primary host phase(s) of As in the aquifer sediments and verify the formation mechanism of As contaminated groundwater of Sonargaon, Bangladesh, where the highest As contaminated groundwater appears in actively recharging zones. Among those minerals, only the chlorite included As by &mu;-XRF analysis. Fe-rich and tritoctahedral nature indicated this chlorite termed chamosite. The chlorite was weathered to form goethite on the cleavage, however, the goethite did not host the As. Combining with the saturation of goethite in the groundwater (Itai <i>et al.</i>, 2008), <i>in situ</i> chemical weathering of the chlorite promoted by accelerated aerobic water infiltration is suggested to be the first stage of formation of the As contaminated groundwater of the Holocene aquifer. This study implies the importance of aerobic aquifer condition to promote the As release via decomposition of As-bearing detrital mineral(s) as the formation mechanism of As contaminated groundwater in the Ganges-Bramaptra-Meghna river basin.

    We have developed a method for the quantitative analysis of binary mixtures of minerals using a common Raman microspectrometer having backscattering optical configuration (180&deg; illumination) and a rotating sample stage. Using the averaged Raman spectra of mineral mixtures, the calibration curves of four mixtures of calcium carbonate and silica minerals&mdash;calcite and quartz, aragonite and calcite, quartz and cristobalite, and coesite and quartz&mdash;are constructed. The calibration curves express the correlation between the weight fraction and the relative intensities of the Raman bands intrinsic to the binary mixture. This technique can be used to map the phase distributions in one or two dimensions across an analytical sample surface and conduct quantitative analyses of samples containing inclusions with dimensions on the order of a few microns.<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;As an example of the quantitative analysis using Raman microspectroscopy, the distribution of quartz and cristobalite in a silica nodule in volcanic rock from Akaze, Ishikawa prefecture is investigated. It is confirmed by X-ray diffraction, optical observation, and Raman mapping analysis that microquartz and opal-C are horizontally layered in the silica nodule. The line profile of the Raman spectra across the two regions reveals a sequential change in the weight ratio from quartz to cristobalite.

    The experimental Raman spectra of monoclinic tridymite and its higher temperature orthorhombic modification were successfully simulated with valence force fields applied to the X-ray determined structural parameters. The normal modes contributing to the corresponding Raman peaks in both the phases share essentially the same types of atomic displacements or bond deformations. In the modes with the wave numbers between 100 and 600 cm<sup>&minus;1</sup>, predominant are the librations of Si-O-Si planes around Si-Si lines, being followed by bending of Si-O-Si or O-Si-O angles. The librational motions of SiO<sub>4</sub> units around Si appear in the modes below 100 cm<sup>&minus;1</sup>. Significant bond stretching and compression appear in the modes with wave numbers higher than 700 cm<sup>&minus;1</sup>: the deformations are classified into 10 types, 7 for Si-O-Si and 3 for SiO<sub>4</sub>. Some modes in the highest frequency group between 1150 and 1250 cm<sup>&minus;1</sup> show <i>symmetric</i> bond stretching and compression of SiO<sub>4</sub> units, while those between 1000 and 1150 cm<sup>&minus;1</sup> <i>antisymmetric</i> stretching and compression of Si-O-</i>Si.<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A low-frequency normal mode is identified to have the polarization vectors of O atoms, which are nearly parallel with the largest principal axes of their thermal ellipsoids. A disorder model is presented to account for the extremely large mean square displacements of O atoms, and a possibility is suggested for the normal mode to boost the hopping of the SiO<sub>4</sub> units between the two orientations.

    Unit-cell parameters, Raman scattering profiles and DTA curves were measured on monoclinic tridymite from fired silica brick. Ten peaks appear in the Raman measurements from 100 to 1250 cm<sup>&minus;1</sup> at 25&deg;C, and their positions and widths show no significant change up to 110&deg;C. The monoclinic unit-cell parameters, <i>a</i>, <i>b</i>, <i>c</i> and &beta;, slightly increase or remain nearly constant with increasing temperatures up to 110&deg;C. Both the Raman spectra and the unit-cell parameters undergo significant changes in the range from 110 to 115&deg;C. Only two endothermic peaks, at 117 and 166&deg;C, appear in the DTA curve measured on a powdered sample of nearly pure monoclinic phase in a heating run from 25 to 300&deg;C. In X-ray single-crystal refinements, the structural parameters including anisotropic temperature factors of atoms were fully determined for the monoclinic phase at 25, 80, 90 and 100&deg;C, and the orthorhombic phase at 140&deg;C. The difference between the temperature factors on both sides of the transition point is the most remarkable: 0.0286 &Aring;<sup>2</sup> in average for all O atoms at 100&deg;C in the monoclinic phase and 0.0713 &Aring;<sup>2</sup> at 140&deg;C, both for B<sub>eq</sub>. The averaged Si-O distances calculated for the atomic mean positions decrease with increasing temperatures: 1.599 &Aring; at 25&deg;C, 1.595 &Aring; at 100&deg;C and 1.576 &Aring; at 140&deg;C, whereas the values corrected for the thermal displacement parameters remain unchanged at 1.61 &Aring; through all the temperatures studied.

    A M&ouml;ssbauer microspectrometer using multi-capillary X-ray lens (MCX) was improved by adding mechanical micro-stages to move precisely MCX and pinhole at the focus and laser to confirm mechanical center of the optics to the last M&ouml;ssbauer microspectrometer.&nbsp; As the results, ganma-ray intensity spectra of low background were measured and well resolved M&ouml;ssbauer spectra of Fe foil were confirmed. &nbsp;

    Vacancies are introduced into octahedral sites of titanomagnetite as titanomagnetite&rsquo;s oxidation.The nonstoichiometry of titanomagnetite is expressed as degree of oxidation, or ratio of&nbsp; vacancies against O<sub>4</sub>. The degree of oxidation,or ratio of vacancies can be estimated by Mossbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. In this study, several nonstoichiometric natural magnetite were synthesized, and their degrees of oxidation were measured by &nbsp;both methods.As a results, equations of degree of oxidation are suggested, and degree of oxidation measured by Mossbauer spectroscopy are consistent with those by X-ray diffraction.

It is assumed that one of the three peaks is degenerated doubly, but there has not been clearly shown. Polarized IR spectra of osumilite showed obvious four peaks due to water molecules in channels. This suggests that one of three peaks in beryl and cordierite is superimposed of two peaks of water molecules.

    Major mineralogy, chemistry, grain size distribution and As host phases of river bed sediments from Ganges-Bramaptra-Meghna (BGM) river system were analyzed to estimate the transportation mechanism of As in the river running through the As affected groundwater areas.Arsenic was fixed in finer sediments, especially in <500 micron m fractions. Sequentially chemical extraction revealed that the main host phase was insoluble phase, mainly comprises silicates and sulfides, and it is notable that As in the other phases, such as adsorbed onto particles and fixed in Fe-oxyhydroxides/oxides, are negligible in the studied sediments. Although the host phase of As could not be specified by XRD and chemistry, basic mineral(s), biotite, chlorite or hornblende, would be the main host of As in the studied sediments. This study suggests that the As is mostly transported as detrital minerals without decomposition until finally settling in the downstream sediments in the BGM delta plain.

    水鉱物中の水素の自己拡散は先行研究が少なく、その微視的な機構については明らかになっていない。ポートランダイト Ca(OH)2は層状水酸化鉱物で、その結晶構造は[CaO6]八面体層と蜂の巣格子状にOH基が配列したプロトン層が交互の積み重なることによって構成される。このような単純な構造のために、ポートランダイトは水素の自己拡散の微視的機構を明らかにするうえで適切なターゲットであるといえる。また、プロトン層の水素の配列は珪酸塩鉱物の水和した粒界に類似すると考えられ、ポートランダイトの水素の拡散係数から、水和した粒界中での水素の拡散速度を大まかに見積もれるはずである。本研究ではポートランダイトの結晶に重水素を拡散させ拡散係数を決定し、拡散の活性化エネルギーから水素の拡散の微視的機構を明らかにした。

    In order to document the source of arsenic of the arsenic contaminated groundwater in the Ganges-Bramaptra Plains, detrital biotite and chlorite were analyzed by microbeam XRF in SPring-8. Although the biotite rarely included detectable arsenic, the chlorite included arsenic ubiquitously in the crystal. The arsenic concentration of chlorite could be quantified, a few tens to hundreds ppm was estimated from the X-ray intensities in comparison with arsenic bearing minerals such as realgar and arsenocpyrite. The chlorite included submicron-order size goethite, assured by X-ray diffraction using Gandorfi camera and TEM observation. However, the goethite was not a product of chemical weathering in situ, judged from the well crystallized nature. Unlike the widely accepted hypothesis, in which the adsorbed arsenic onto Fe-hydroxides via chemical weathering of arsenic bearing sulfide minerals in Himalayas was released into groundwater in association with microbial reduction-dissolution of the Fe-hydroxides, the arsenic was released from the chlorite in the aquifer.

    In order to better understand the mobilization of arsenic to form arsenic polluted groundwater, geochemical and mineralogical investigations have been carried out on the continuous core samples (up to 90.1 m depth) at transitional area of Holocene and Pleistocene deposits at Sonargaon of Narayanganj district, Bangladesh. Lithologial characteristics and geochemical data demonstrated that elevated levels of total arsenic (max. 53.4 mg/kg) are found in organic-rich fine-grained silty-very fine sand rather than those of coarser sandy sediments. Arsenic does not show significant correlation with amount of clay fractions. Weakly positive correlation between As and total iron is observed in the upper aquifer (< 28.6 m) of Holocene and lower aquifer (38.5 - 90.1 m) of Pleistocene sediments, while the samples from the middle aquitard (28.6 - 38.5 m) of Pleistocene sediments do not give any correlation. As shows a good positive correlation with Al2O3 throughout the sediment column. Relationship between As and TOC in the middle aquitard sediments shows a very good positive correlation, on contrast, no distinctive relationship can be found in the samples from the upper and lower sand units. Sequential extraction of arsenic exhibits that As is mainly fixed in (1) organic and (2) sulfide and silicate phases in all of the samples. As concentration of the sediments is in accordance with concentrations of mica, Al2O3, Fe2O3, but not well with particle size, indicating that the biotite is a primary source of As in the studied area. Vertical flow of groundwater along well pipes and/or those surroundings accelerates the chemical weathering of this mineral to release As into the aquifer and persistently exists near the bottom of upper aquifer, because the groundwater above the thick confining layer is probably stagnant and has not been experienced sufficient flushing until present.
