    Abstract
    Harmful diatom (Coscinodiscus waillesi and Eucampia zodiacus) blooms frequently occur in the western coastal area of Japan from late autumn to early spring, causing discoloration of edible seaweed nori (Pyropia yezoensis). One of the causes of the discoloration is thought to be nutrient depletion (oligotrophication) due to nutrient uptake by diatoms. The goal of our study was to elucidate the mechanisms underlying phytoplankton blooms and the effects of such blooms on comprehensive nutrient cycles in the benthic-pelagic ecosystem. We developed a new ecosystem model, EMAGIN-L.P., simultaneously representing phytoplankton life cycle and the benthic-pelagic ecosystem. The life cycles of four types of phytoplankton—dinoflagellates (DFL), small diatoms (SDA), Coscinodiscus wailesii (CDW), and Eucampia zodiacus (EZ)—were numerically modeled and incorporated into an existing ecosystem model, ECOHYM (Sohma et al., 2008a), representing the food web among the benthic and pelagic systems and carbon-nitrogen-phosphorus-oxygen-coupled cycles driven by biogeochemical and physical processes. The model was applied to the Harima-Nada Sea where the discoloration of nori frequently occurs. The model reproduced the differences in timing and scale of the four phytoplankton blooms, and each bloom could be explained by a combination of temperature suitability, light availability, nutrient limitation, and vertical mixing within the water column. Furthermore, through a sensitivity analysis, competition for nutrient uptake among different types of phytoplankton was observed in the model. That is, from June to October, when DFL and SDA blooms occur, the SDA nutrient uptake rate is high and SDA suppresses the DFL bloom, while from November to March, when CDW and EZ blooms occur, the nutrient uptake rate of EZ is high and the CDW bloom is slightly suppressed. The developed model representing the phytoplankton bloom mechanisms in the whole benthic-pelagic coupled ecosystem will be a useful tool for revealing the mechanisms underlying the nutrient cycle and the contribution of harmful diatom blooms to the discoloration of nori. The modeling approach presented in this paper (i.e., categorizing different types of major phytoplankton and incorporating their life cycle into the entire benthic-pelagic coupling ecosystem) can be an effective method to understand, predict, and manage the problems caused by harmful diatom blooms across different damage types, harmful diatom species, and ocean areas.

    A new ecosystem model - the first model describing the ecological connectivity consisting of both benthic-pelagic and central baytidal flat ecosystem coupling while describing the vertical micro-scale in the benthic ecosystem, simultaneously - was developed and applied to Tokyo Bay (Sohma et al. 2005a). The model permits the prediction/evaluation of the effects of environmental measures, such as tidal flat restoration, sand capping, dredging, and nutrients load reduction from rivers, on the hypoxic estuary from the perspectives of (1) the whole estuary composed of temporal-spatial mutual linkage of benthic-pelagic or central baytidal flat ecosystems (holistic approach) , and (2) each biochemical and physical process contributing to oxygen production/consumption (elemental approach) . The model outputs demonstrated the significant ecosystem responses as follows. First, the oxygen consumption in the benthic system during summer was quite low due to low level of dissolved oxygen (hypoxia), although reduced substances. Mn^2+, Fe^2+ and S^2- were highly produced and accumulated in the pore water. This result denotes importance to use the oxygen consumption rate under the high level of dissolved oxygen as the index of hypoxia potential. Second, both the tidal flat creation and nutrients load reduction decreased the anoxic water volume and mass of detritus in Tokyo Bay. However, the tidal flats creation led to the higher biomassof benthic fauna, while the nutrients load reduction led to the lower biomass of them compared to the existing situation. This result clarifies the differences from the measure aimed at a "bountiful ocean: a non-hypoxic and rich production of higher level trophic biology" to the measure just aimed at a "clear ocean: a non-hypoxic and low level of particulate organic matter" and also the differences from a bountiful ecosystem to a higher water quality. Lastly, in the simulation, Tokyo Bay reproducing reclaimed tidal flats (earlier Tokyo Bay system) prevented the increase of oxygen consumption potential (hypoxia potential) and the decrease of the higher trophic production to red tide compared to the existing Tokyo Bay system with reclamation of tidal flats. This result demonstrates the higher ecosystem tolerance of the earlier Tokyo Bay to red tide, and tidal flats function of keeping an optimized ecological balance to the environmental perturbation.

    The catch of Ammodytes Japonicus in the Harima-nada Sea has been declining over the recent years, and the effects of oligotrophication and rising water temperatures have been pointed out. The entire food web, from primary producers to higher consumers, is affected by them, resulting in the dynamics of Am-modytes Japonicus' stock and. In this study, we developed the Ammodytes Japonicus EwE model, which physiological responses of marine organisms to water temperature,nutrients and life history of Ammo-dytes Japonicus into a higher ecosystem model; the Ecopath with Ecosim model, and applied it to the Harima-nada Sea. The results of the sensitivity analysis of water temperature and nutrients using this model indicated that Ammodytes Japonicus decreased when oligotrophication progressed beyond the cur-rent state, increased with a 1 degree rise in water temperature, and decreased with a 2 degree rise in water temperature. It was inferred that the decrease in it was mainly due to the decline in its production caused by the decrease in their food; Calanus Sinicus.

    The Harima-nada Sea has been suffering from discoloration of Nori:Pyrophia yezonesis. One cause is thought to be the decrease in dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) over the past decades from the 1980s to the 2000s. The objective of this study is to clarify the critical factor of the decrease in DIN from the per-spective of the nutrients cycle comprised of the benthic-pelagic ecosystem network. We used the benthic-pelagic ecosystem model, EMAGIN-L.P., which analyzes the nutrient cycles driven by biogeochemical-physical processes and metabolisms of benthic faunas, zooplankton, and four types of phytoplankton. We analyzed the effect of the decrease in DIN inflow from rivers and from the surrounding sea area, Osaka Bay, and the decrease of bivalves from 1980 and 2000 on DIN in the Harima-nada Sea. From the analysis, the DIN decreases in the Harima-nada Sea since the 1980s were affected by all of the above, however, most significantly affected by the decrease in DIN inflow from Osaka Bay. On the other hand, the decrease in DIN from rivers had the most significant effect on the surface in the coastal areas of Hyogo prefecture in winter.

    Ocean acidification associated with elevated atmospheric CO2 affects marine organisms. This effect al-so alters the ocean's ability to mitigate climate change, i.e., the sequential processes of atmospheric CO2 absorption, fixation of absorbed carbon through biological production, and sequestration of fixed carbon in sediments. In this study, we formulated the pH dependence of biological metabolisms of zooplankton, phytoplankton, and benthic animals and incorporated it into an ecosystem model that can comprehen-sively analyze the carbon cycle in the benthic and pelagic systems. The model was applied to Tokyo Bay, and carbon absorption, capture, and sequestration functions were compared with and without considera-tion of pH dependence. The results showed that the pH dependence of marine organisms decreased the absorption function and increased the fixation and sequestration function when the 2100 A.D. condition in the RCP8.5 scenario was continued. The results suggest the importance of considering the pH depend-ence of marine organisms in the assessment of climate change mitigation.

    &nbsp;Hypoxia has been improving throughout Tokyo Bay, however, there are still seriously hypoxic areas. In this study, we analyzed the secular change of dissolved oxygen (DO) and consumption mechanism of the sea-floor due to reduction of nutrients and COD inflow from the land from 1979 to 2009, using the benthic-pelagic coupled ecosystem model, EMAGIN-H.P. As a result, the model demonstrated that there were at least three types of areas: zone A, in which DO increases; zone B, in which DO turns from a decrease to an increase; and zone C, where DO decreases. In addition, reduction of nutrients and COD inflow leads to (1) decrease of reduced substances (Mn<sup>2+</sup>, Fe<sup>2+</sup>, S<sup>2-</sup>) and increase of benthic fauna due to improvement of hypoxia at zone A, (2) decrease of reduced substances due to DO increase and decrease of benthic fauna due to food shortage at zone C, and (3) increase of benthic fauna until 1994 with the improvement of hypoxia and then a decrease due to food shortage at zone B. These results show that the optimal amount of nutrients and COD inflow in view of both the increase of benthic fauna and the improvement of hypoxia differs from area to area.

The release and uptake of atmospheric CO<sub>2</sub> at the air-sea boundary is an important element consisting the series of carbon capture and storage of the shallow waters. In this study, we applied an ecosystem model, EMAGIN_B.C., considering carbonate chemistry, food-web, and Carbon-Nutrients-Oxygen cycling in the benthic-pelagic coupled system to Tokyo Bay, and analyzed the dynamics of air-sea CO<sub>2</sub> flux and its factors especially focusing on the river mouth area. As the result of the model analysis, CO<sub>2</sub> was released from the ocean to air at the river mouth area on an annual average basis, although CO<sub>2</sub> was taken up at other areas in Tokyo Bay. In addition, the CO<sub>2</sub> release and CO<sub>2</sub> uptake are repeated in the period from the end of April to the end of November. The CO<sub>2</sub> absorption period is thought to be dominated by the consumption of DIC by photosynthesis, and the release period is thought to be dominated by consumption of total alkalinity by nitrification.

    瀬戸内海では、2015年に10月に瀬戸内海環境保全特別措置法が改正され、湾・灘ごとや季節ごとの課題に対応し多面的価値・機能が最大限に発揮された「豊かな瀬戸内海」を目指すことが明記された。同改正により、今後の施策の方向性が、「きれいな海」の実現から「豊かな海」の実現へ大きく方向転換されたと言える。
    近年、瀬戸内海東部海域では、海水温の上昇や海域の貧栄養化などの海域環境の変化によって、海苔養殖の色落ちや食害、貝毒の発生、漁獲量の減少など、様々な問題が顕在化している。本研究集会では、地方自治体の水産関係研究機関を中心に実施された調査結果から、現在の瀬戸内海東部海域の現状を概観し、各湾・灘が抱える課題を抽出することによって、その情報を共有するとともに、課題解決に向けた今後の研究に必要な視点、方向性について議論したい。

    草場・マングローブ林は,高い気候変動緩和能を有する可能性がある。この機能は,大気-海洋間のCO2ガス交換(炭素吸収),生物生産による無機態炭素の有機物・炭酸カルシウムへの固定(炭素固定),固定した炭素の堆積物深部への貯留(炭素貯留)という一連の過程に支配される。一方,亜熱帯海域では,サンゴ礁が海草場・マングローブ林と隣接する場合が多く,サンゴ,海草,マングローブ3生態系の連鎖からなる複合生態系という視点から,炭素吸収・固定・貯留機能を理解することは重要である。本研究では,サンゴ・海草・マングローブ複合生態系モデル:EMAGIN-B.C._MG・SG・CRを新たに開発し,沖縄県西表島ユツン海域に適用した。本稿では,モデル解析から,サンゴ・海草・マングローブ複合生態系の炭素吸収・固定・貯留機能と,この機能に対するサンゴの生物代謝の寄与を解明することを目的とする.

    Shallow-coastal ecosystems (SCE) have the function of climate change mitigation (CCM). CO2 gas exchange between the atmosphere and the ocean (CO2 air-sea flux) is an important factor of CCM that constitutes a series of processes in which coastal ecosystems take up, secure, and store carbon from the atmospheric CO2. CO2 air-sea flux is governed by the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2), and it fluctuates due to the biochemical production/consumption of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (TA). In SCE with high biological productivity, biochemical DIC and TA production/consumption are large in both pelagic and benthic systems, however, it is unclear how much they contribute to pCO2. The purpose of our study is to elucidate the dominant factors of biochemical processes on the CO2 air-sea flux from the viewpoint of the comprehensive carbon cycle in the pelagic-benthic coupled ecosystem. To achieve this purpose, we used the benthic-pelagic coupled ecosystem model (EMAGIN-B.C) describing (1) carbon secures associated with planktons/benthic faunas metabolism, (2) carbon storage through sedimentation/burial of carbon to the benthic system, (3) carbonate dynamics among pCO2, pH, DIC, and TA driven by biochemical processes. The model was applied to Tokyo bay, an urbanized SCE in Japan. As a result of analysis, if pelagic DIC biochemical production/consumption were eliminated, CO2 air-sea flux changes from the absorption of 5.5 mol/m2/yr to the emission of 10.1 mol/m2/yr in average, annually. If benthic TA biochemical production/consumption were eliminated, CO2 air-sea flux changed from the absorption of 5.5 mol/m2/yr to the emission of 7.3 mol/m2/yr. The main causes of the changes of pelagic DIC and benthic TA are DIC consumption by phytoplankton photosynthesis, and TA production by anoxic mineralization of benthic detritus respectively. These results suggest that DIC and TA dynamics both in the pelagic and benthic ecosystems strongly affects CO2 air-sea flux.

    The Harima-nada sea, a part of the Seto Inland Sea in Japan, has been suffering from the fishery damages, e. g.
    discoloration of Pyrophia yezonesis and decrease of ammodytes personatus. One cause is thought to be the decrease in
    dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) over the past decades from the 1980s-2000s.
    The objective of this study is to clarify the key factor of the decrease in DIN from the perspective of nutrients cycle
    comprised of the benthic-pelagic ecosystem network. We used the benthic-pelagic ecosystem model, EMAGIN-L.P.,
    which analyzes the nutrients cycles driven by biogeochemical-physical processes and metabolisms of benthic faunas,
    zooplankton, and 4 types of phytoplankton. By this, we analyzed the effect of the decrease in DIN inflow from rivers and
    from the surrounding sea area, Osaka bay, and the decrease of bivalves from 1980 and 2000 on DIN in Harima-nada sea.
    From the analysis, the DIN decreases in the Harima-nada sea since the 1980s was affected by all of the above, However,
    most significantly affected by the decrease in DIN inflow from Osaka Bay. Further, the decrease in the number of bivalves
    did not cause only the decrease in DIN concentration, but also the increase in phytoplankton.
