    身の回りには左右対称な形をした物やデザインがたくさんあります。よく見ると左右対称に限らず回転対称なもの並進対称なものも多く見つかります。対称性はデザインや建築のみならず、絵画、音楽の中にも存在しています。さらには方程式や自然法則対称性というものを考えることができます。このように対称性は芸術とともに自然科学の諸分野で本質的な役割を果たしています。対称性と芸術・数学・物理学の関連を紹介し、数学者がどのようにして対称性の数学を作り出したかを解説します。

    多角形は表と裏の2つの面を持ちますが, 帯状の紙を折ることにより表裏以外だけでなく複数の面を内部に含む多角形を作ることができます. 各面に絵を描けば万華鏡のように異なる絵が次々と現れるペーパークラフトになります(フレクサゴンと呼ばれます).実際にフレクサゴンを作りその性質を調べてもらうことにより, フレクサゴンがメビウスの輪の一般化になっていること, 面の構成方法などに気が付いてもらいます. この作業を通じてフレクサゴンを数学的に扱うことが可能であることを理解し, 新しい数学がどのようにして発見されるのかを体験してもらいます. 実習が中心の講義です.
