    <p>The particle size effect of pesticide (penthiopyrad) on the control of plant diseases was investigated. First, monodisperse penthiopyrad particles could be prepared by the poor solvent dilution method. Next, three types of penthiopyrad particles with different median diameters were prepared and sprayed on the cut leaves of cherry tomato prior to inoculate gray mold fungi (<i>Botrytis cinerea</i>). As a result, it was suggested that pesticide micronization improved the control effect against plant pathogen, and that pesticides could be reduced by about 60%. In addition, when fluorescent penthiopyrad particles were exposed to the hyphae of gray mold fungi, pesticide micronization was also found to improve the penetration of pesticides into cells. From the above, it was demonstrated that the pesticide micronization increases the probability of contact with plant pathogens and uptake into fungus cells, thereby improving the control effect of pesticides.</p>

  • Synthesis of Chitosan-coated Alginate Capsules for Encapsulating Probiotics

    <p>Alginate capsules for encapsulating probiotics were synthesized under mild conditions without using harmful chemicals. When alginate capsules were synthesized using glucono-δ-lactone while suppressing the rapid pH drop of the inner water phase, it was possible to encapsulate living lactic acid bacteria. It was also found that coating the alginate capsule surface with chitosan improved the protective effect of the encapsulated lactic acid bacteria. Furthermore, culturing the encapsulated bacteria inside the capsules increased the number of living bacteria to meet the minimum recommended level for probiotic effect. Finally, we demonstrated that almost all encapsulated bacteria were released within 60 minutes in simulated intestinal fluid. From the above, it was suggested that the chitosan-coated alginate capsules synthesized in this study can be used as capsules for encapsulating probiotics.</p>

  • The effect of metal oxide nanoparticle overexposure on lettuce root elongation and chlorophyll production

    Engineered ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) exist in particle and ion states in aqueous solutions, but information on the effect of different states of Zn on plant development is limited. In this study, we exposed lettuce seedlings to different Zn states. The 10 mg L−1 ZnO NP dispersion containing 0.74 mg L−1 Zn2+ ions had an inhibitory effect on root elongation. However, root elongation was not inhibited by 0.74 mg L−1 Zn2+ ions dissociated from ZnCl2. Additionally, the ZnO NP-removed Zn ion solution containing 0.74 mg L−1 Zn2+ had little effect on root elongation. Water-insoluble SiO2 and TiO2 NP dispersions had no effect on root elongation, suggesting that the phytotoxicity of ionizable metal oxide NP dispersions, such as ZnO, negatively affected root elongation. The Zn content in lettuce roots incubated in ZnO NP dispersions was 7.8-fold higher than that in ZnCl2 solution-incubated roots. Moreover, 20 mg L−1 ZnO NP dispersion reduced chlorophyll contents in the lettuce seedlings, and all plants died after transplanting into a medium lacking ZnO NPs. Inhibition of root elongation by ZnO NP dispersions and ZnCl2 solutions was accompanied by changes in the polysaccharide content of roots, and especially water-soluble components of the cell walls were accumulated. Excess intracellular zinc increased the water-soluble fraction of the cell wall, leading to accumulation of zinc ions and stagnation of root elongation due to abnormal cell wall metabolism. In plants exposed to ZnO NPs, a specific mechanism is suggested whereby accumulation of zinc in roots results in inhibition of chlorophyll synthesis.

    A microbial method using baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) was developed to collect aqueous Pd(II) ions through bioreductive deposition and biosorption at room temperature. Resting cells of S. cerevisiae reduced 1.0 mol/m3 aqueous Pd(II) ions in a Na2PdCl4 solution to metallic Pd(0) at pH 7.0 within 60 min when formate was provided as the electron donor under anaerobic conditions. Palladium nanoparticles were deposited on the surface of S. cerevisiae cells. The yeast cells also exhibited an excellent ability to collect Pd(II) ions from a 1.0 mol/m3 aqueous solution at pH 1.0 within 30 min under air. The baker's yeast was also applied to the effective recovery of aqueous Pd(II) ions in 1000–2000 mol/m3 HNO3 solutions (pH −0.3 to 0.0). When processing electroplating solutions, the yeast cells were able to selectively collect soluble Pd(II) at pH 0.0–0.8 within 60 min. Our proposal of using commercially available baker's yeast as a biosorbent enables rapid and efficient recovery of soluble palladium over the pH range − 0.30 to 7.0.

    We proposed using new biotechnologies to recycle platinum group metals (PGMs) and gold from the end of life wastes, which will lead to the sustainable use of precious and rare metals. When targeting leachate of spent automotive catalysts, the metal ion-reducing bacterium Shewanella algae was found to reduce and deposit aqueous PGMs ions (Pd(II), Pt(IV) and Rh(III)) as metallic particles within the bacterial cells at room temperature and pH 6 within 60 min, using formate as the electron donor. We also found that the baker’s yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae can be applied as a biomaterial for adsorbing Au(III) ions from aqueous acidic solutions. When processing leachate of spent electronic components, S. cerevisiae cells were able to rapidly and selectively collect Au(III) ions from strongly acidic solutions. Unlike conventional hydrometallurgical methods, our proposed microbial methods enable the attractive and eco-friendly recovery of PGMs and gold from secondary sources.
