Environmental control in greenhouse horticulture is essential for providing optimal conditions for plant growth and achieving greater productivity and quality. To develop appropriate environmental management practices for greenhouse horticulture through sensing technologies for monitoring the environmental stress responses of plants in real time, we evaluated the relative value of the stomatal opening to develop a technology that continuously monitors stomatal aperture to determine the moisture status of plants. When plants suffer from water stress, the stomatal conductance of leaves decreases, and transpiration and photosynthesis are suppressed. Therefore, monitoring stomatal behavior is important for controlling plant growth. In this study, a method for simply monitoring stomatal conductance was developed based on the heat balance method. The stomatal opening index (SOI) was derived from heat balance equations on intact tomato leaves, wet reference leaves, and dry reference leaves by measuring their temperatures in a growth chamber and a greenhouse. The SOI can be approximated as the ratio of the conductance of the intact leaf to the conductance of the wet reference leaf, which varies from 0 to 1. Leaf temperatures were measured with infrared thermometry. The theoretically and experimentally established SOI was verified with tomato plants grown hydroponically in a greenhouse. The SOI derived by this method was consistent with the leaf conductance measured via the porometer method, which is a standard method for evaluating actual leaf conductance that mainly consists of stomatal conductance. In conclusion, the SOI for the continuous monitoring of stomatal behavior will be useful not only for studies on interactions between plants and the environment but also for environmental management, such as watering at plant production sites.

  • Recovery of Plant Nutrients from Food Residue by Microbial and Thermochemical Treatment

Recovery of plant nutrients from food residue is one of the most effective methods for resource recycling. To use food residue for hydroponics, the organic matters have to be mineralized and the nutrients have to be dissolved. Anaerobic digestion, biological oxidation, anaerobic digestion followed by biological oxidation, and wet oxidation are treatments to break down organic matter. The decomposition products of these processes are in liquid form and would be used as liquid fertilizer. The authors investigated the difference in the behaviour of nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus in each treatment. Nitrogen was converted to ammonium by anaerobic digestion and wet oxidation, and to nitrate by biological oxidation. Potassium did not change significantly with treatment. The percentage of dissolved phosphorus in all treatments, especially in the microbial treatment, was smaller than in food residue. This is probably due to phosphorus binding to other ions and uptake by microorganisms during the treatment process.

Strong wind inhibits plant growth by creating mechanical stress and increasing water loss by increased transpiration. In the present study, we focused on far-red (FR) light as a factor that interacts with the effects of strong wind. We investigated the effect of wind speed (0.5 or 6.5 m s(-1)) on growth, photosynthate allocation, and stomatal conductance (g(s)) of cucumber (Cucumis sativus) seedlings under illumination with FR light (FR+) or without it (FR-). Interactions between wind speed and FR light influenced plant growth; strong wind decreased plant growth under FR+, but not under FR-. The growth decrease caused by strong wind resulted from decreases in the net assimilation rate (NAR) and leaf area ratio (LAR). The decreased LAR caused by strong wind was probably caused by decreased photosynthate allocation to the leaves as a result of the increased photosynthate allocation to the stem to resist the wind-created mechanical stress. The strong wind did not influence the photosynthate allocation under FR-, probably because the mechanical stress caused by the strong wind was smaller when stem elongation was decreased by FR-. The decrease in g(s) due to strong wind was smaller under FR- than under FR+. This may be a result of increased tolerance to water stress, which is associated with the increased proportion of active phytochrome under FR-, and may explain why the decrease in NAR due to the strong wind was smaller under FR-.

     More details

An automatic watering system for controlling the moisture level of soil-mix in a plug tray was developed and used for tomato plug seedling production. Plug trays with a volume of 1.4 L/tray were used for the experiment. The plug sheets were placed on a bench with an ebb-and-flood circulating watering system. A plug sheet at the center of the bench was weighed with an electric balance by suspending it from a steel frame. When the amount of integrated evapotranspiration of the plug sheet estimated from a decrease in weight of the plug sheet reached over a setpoint of 500 g/tray during the daytime, all the plug sheets were watered from below. After the water in the bench was drained, the amount of integrated evapotranspiration was reset to zero. In this way, fluctuations in the moisture level of the soil-mix were controlled within the range of the setpoint during the experiment period.
