    <p>The carburizing and nitriding, essential surface modification methods for steels, enhance wear, fatigue, and corrosion resistance by forming fine carbides, nitrides, and nanoclusters involving alloy elements. Understanding the interactions between interstitial X (C or N) and substitutional elements M is critical for optimizing these processes and tailoring the material properties to specific applications. This study investigates the interaction energies in diatomic and triatomic clusters involving C/N atoms and substitutional elements of Al, Si, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zr, Nb, and Mo. Using the first-principles calculations, this study reveals the intricate balance of interactions within these clusters, highlighting how atomic arrangements and specific element combinations can lead to either repulsion or attraction. We found that the interaction energies for triatomic clusters can be represented using a linear combination of interaction energies for diatomic clusters. Stable triatomic clusters comprise the second nearest neighbor M–X interactions for Fe–Ti–N, Fe–V–N, and Fe–Nb–N alloys. This finding was consistent with experimental observations of the monolayer clusters. Our analysis using the multiple linear regression and stratified analysis reveals that the metallic radius of element M influences interaction in M–X clusters: a larger metallic radius causes repulsion in the first nearest neighbor clusters and attraction in the second and third nearest neighbor clusters due to strain relief.</p>

    <p>Due to the complexity and variations in defects, surface inspection of casting relies on human vision. However, this approach becomes unstable due to human fatigue. Additionally, the lack of a standardized communication method for surface inspection criteria impedes accurate quantification. With recent advancements in machine learning and artificial intelligence, specifically with deep learning and Convolution Neural Networks (CNN), the automation of the surface inspection for castings is becoming feasible. We have developed an image analysis method based on deep learning to automate the inspection of the cast surfaces of ductile cast iron pipes. Ductile cast iron pipe is a crucial component in social infrastructure, and we must identify defective products reliably. To reliably identify defective products, it is imperative to merge quantitative grade regression with the classification of defects, ensuring no flaws are overlooked. Images of the cast surfaces underwent preprocessing and data augmentation before being input into the CNN. We compared twelve pre-trained CNN architectures based on ImageNet, eventually utilizing fine-tuned DenseNet201. For grade regression and defect classification, we proposed an ensemble learning approach, integrating a weighted average of the regressor and classifier with weighted cross-entropy as the loss function. By adjusting the weights in the proposed method, we attained grade regression while maintaining a 100% recall rate for defect classification.</p>

    <p>Fractographic analysis of fracture surfaces helps to improve the performance of mechanical pieces. In order to determine the causes that generated the fracture, it is necessary to classify a fracture into a failure mode. Experts in fractographic classification use visual evidence of textures and surface marks to determine the failure classification. The fractographic images for this task are obtained using a Scanning Election Microscope (SEM). With new advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence, specifically with deep learning and Convolution Neural Networks (CNN) becoming accessible, it is becoming possible to automate fractographic classification. This study aimed to improve the accuracy of fractographic classification using CNN by considering the material types. We proposed a Stepwise Selection of Source Classes (SSSC) to perform transfer learning considering the material types. The proposed method was applied to classifying fractographic SEM images into seven groups of fracture surfaces in alloy steels, austenitic stainless steels, and copper and copper alloys. The existing method, which does not distinguish the material types, achieved an average accuracy of 92.4%, while the proposed method improved the average accuracy to 98.7%.</p>

    Recent advances in high-strength steels for automobile applications or surface-hardened steels have attracted interest on controlling the nanoscale dispersion of alloy carbides/nitrides in ferrite. Particularly, B1-type carbide/nitride precipitation and metastable alloy clustering can be understood as the coupled ordering and compositional phase separation of interstitial alloying elements i and substitutional alloying elements s, i.e., "spinodal ordering". In this paper, the behavior of i–s clustering and alloy carbide/nitride precipitation is revealed by nanoscale characterization, theoretical calculations, and evaluations of mechanical properties. Physical measurements and density function theory-based analyses revealed that strong i–s attractive interaction is responsible for metastable i–s clustering, which clearly indicated "hidden" nanoscale inhomogeneity in solid solutions. Further, we discuss a concept termed interstitial sublattice engineering in bulk and at interphase boundary for strengthening of alloyed steels.
