    Oyster farming rafts are traditionally constructed from bamboo, which are susceptible to damage during typhoons. To overcome this, a promising solution of farming rafts made of highly flexible polyethylene is proposed. Since there are only a few studies to understand the bending deformation of elastic deformable bodies in waves, the elasticity of the highly flexible polyethylene needs to evaluated quantitatively. Therefore, a time-domain analysis model for evaluating the motion characteristics and deformation performance of the polyethylene rafts is implemented. In addition, 1:6.75 model scale tests were conducted in a water tank under regular waves. Aluminum plates with similar bending rigidity as the real scale model were employed and bending strains were measured at three locations on the aluminum plates. It is found that the results in terms of displacements and bending strains predicted by the numerical model agree well with the model scale test results. A sensitivity analysis is conducted on the numerical model to elucidate the performance of the highly flexible polyethylene rafts for oyster farming.

    海面養殖漁業は我が国の食の安定供給のために重要な産業である。そのため,自動化・情報化による安定性および生産性の向上が求められているが,その作業の多くが海上で行われる海面養殖漁業では,自動航行船等の活用が鍵となる。本稿では,筆者が取り組んできた四胴型自動航行船を用いた養殖施設周りの自動水質計測の事例と,現在研究開発を進めているロボット漁船を用いた自動給餌システムの事例を紹介する。

    Oysters have been cultivated in Japan for a significant period of time, but the damage caused by typhoons has been a persistent problem. To address this issue, we studied the movement of Gros (oyster shell clumps attached to scallop) and hanging reams to identify the cause of typhoon-related damage. First, we constructed a Gro model and calculated the added mass coefficient and damping coefficient via a forced oscillation test. We also determined the drag coefficient from a drag test using the same model. Utilizing these coefficients as input parameters, we conducted a numerical analysis to study the behavior of the Gros and the hanging reams. In the numerical analysis, we subjected three hanging reams to waves, wind, and currents. We estimated the entanglement tendency of the hanging reams based on the distance between adjacent Gros. The results showed that the likelihood of entanglement of the hanging reams increased with a decrease in wave period for both regular and irregular waves. In addition, we discovered that the hanging reams’ entanglement was more likely when waves were incident in the direction where the chain was aligned.

    This paper proposes a method to enables the generation of short-length routes with consideration of obstacle avoidance and significantly reduces the computation time compared to existing research for ocean route optimization. The reduced computation time allows recalculation of routes for autonomous vessel underway. By simulating the recalculation of four cases of the vessel underway that may require recalculation, this paper demonstrates that the proposed method can generate new and superior routes for the vessel that needs to change their routes due to certain factors.

    The Quadmaran vessel is a maritime multi-hull vessel developed for water quality observation in aquaculture farms. The vessel’s dynamic positioning (DP) performance is essential for the accuracy of the collected data. The maneuvering characteristics in DP mode have been investigated in our previous research using a quasi-static motion prediction model based on static planar motion mechanism (PMM) tests. However, since the Quadmaran vessel has a unique hull arrangement, the motion characteristics need to be determined with greater accuracy. Therefore, in this study, the maneuvering equations are newly established with higher accuracy hydrodynamic derivatives determined through dynamic PMM tests. The higher order hydrodynamic derivatives are obtained from pure sway, pure yaw and pure yaw with a constant angle tests. Model scale experiments are conducted to establish an advanced mathematical model and compared with the quasi-static assumption results. The result shows significant improvements in the motion prediction under DP mode, and a more accurate motion prediction model is successfully established. This study is a new attempt to utilize the dynamic PMM tests method on a vessel with unique shape and motion characteristics. The advanced mathematical model deepens our understanding of the maneuverability of a multi-hull vessel in DP mode.

  • A Research on the Optimum Patrol Route for Quad-maran Automated Vessel Reviewed

    This research aims to assess the optimum route proposal system for a four-hull automated navigation vessel ”Quadmaran” by conducting actual sea tests and simulations. The route proposal system is mainly built based on considerations of obstacle avoidance, navigation performance, and operation of multiple vessels. In this paper, the optimal route proposed in the simulations will be verified with the actual sea tests focusing on two aspects. Firstly, it is verified that the proposed patrol route is appropriately executed from the actual sea test results. Secondly, the simulation to incorporate and operate multiple vessels is developed. From the results, it has been found that the cruising time predicted in the simulation is different from the actual cruising time in actual sea tests. An attempt is made to understand the error in cruising time for each section of the patrol route. A simulation of using two vessels is also shown as demonstration. Further, the disadvantages
    of clustering measurement points in the K-means method are also clarified.

    This study proposes a multi-connection cross-flow vertical axis wind turbine, an innovative device to supply electric power in aquaculture farms. The device is a new type floating offshore wind turbine consisting of two independent wind turbine floats and a mooring float set in a straight line. A single-point mooring system with tension is utilized at the mooring float, which allows the wind turbine floats to turn around the moored point. However, there are various challenges to this new concept for its practical application mainly related to turning motion about the moored point. Therefore, the focus of this study is to understand the turning mechanism of the proposed FOWT through dedicated water tank experiments and numerical simulations. As a concept demonstration, two cross-flow wind turbines were mounted on the wind turbine floats and turning motion characteristics about the moored point were observed. A prototype model was built with a model scale of 1/36 using Froude scaling assuming rough weather conditions at the aquaculture farm. Wind speed of 35 m/s, wave height of 0.75 m, and wave period of 5–7.5 s are the assumed environmental conditions in the actual model. Free yawing tests were conducted in only-wind, only-wave and combined wind–wave conditions. Further, a numerical simulation considering the wind loads acting on the turbines is developed. It is found that the wind turbine floats turn to a position where the wind loads acting on the left and right sides of the moored point are balanced. The numerical simulation reproduced the turning motion within an error of 10.
