A T-shaped Pt(0) complex with a diphosphine-borane (DPB) ligand was prepared. The Pt→B interaction enhances the electrophilicity of the metal and triggers the addition of Lewis bases to give the corresponding tetracoordinate complexes. For the first time, anionic Pt(0) complexes are isolated and structurally authenticated. X-ray diffraction analyses show the anionic complexes [(DPB)PtX]- (X = CN, Cl, Br, I) to be square-planar. The d10 configuration and Pt(0) oxidation state of the metal were unambiguously established by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and DFT calculations. The coordination of Lewis acids as Z-type ligands is a powerful mean to stabilize elusive electron-rich metal complexes and achieve uncommon geometry.

  • Ni/Pd-Catalyzed Selective Transformations of Chlorosilanes

    Journal of Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Japan 81 ( 1 ) 14 - 24 2023.01( ISSN:00379980 ( eISSN:18836526

Industrially-produced chlorosilanes are cheap and abundant silicon feedstocks. To obtain various useful organosilicon compounds directly from these chlorosilanes, classical nucleophilic substitution reactions (Kipping method) with reactive organometallic reagents such as Grignard reagents and organolithium are often employed. In contrast, their direct catalytic transformation into beneficial organosilicon compounds remains challenging due to difficulty in cleaving the strong Si-Cl bond(s). To address this issue, we hypothesized that the activation of chlorosilanes with transition metal catalysts could be achieved with the cooperative assistance of Lewis acids by stabilizing the transition state or products. We initially developed Ni-catalyzed silyl-Heck reaction of chlorosilanes and styrenes. The aid of trimethylaluminum dramatically assisted silyl-Heck reaction to afford the corresponding alkenylsilanes. Successively, we also achieved the Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of chlorosilanes with trialkylaluminum species. Interestingly, the selective monoalkylation of dichlorosilanes was achieved to form various monochrolosilanes with a variety of alkyl substituents, which are useful raw materials for silicones. To further broaden the scope of this cross-coupling reaction, we then developed Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of chlorosilanes with dimethylaluminum chloride. The broader generality of di-, tri- and tetrachlorosilanes was revealed in the selective methylation to provide the corresponding methylmonochlorosilanes. Finally, we demonstrated computational study on the activation of Si-Cl bond by the cooperation of palladium and aluminum Lewis acid.

The catalytic cross-coupling of chlorosilanes has recently emerged as an efficient method for the synthesis of organic silicon compounds. Direct Si-Cl bond activation by transition metals is a key elementary reaction in these methods. This theoretical study aimed to elucidate the mechanism of activation of the strong Si-Cl bond in Pd-catalyzed coupling reaction to gain insights for rational catalyst design. Our results suggest two plausible pathways for the bond activation: (i) trans-oxidative addition and (ii) S(N)2-type oxidative addition assisted by a Lewis acid. With an increase in Cl substituents of chlorosilanes, trans-oxidative addition highly feasible due to their higher Lewis acidities, in which the facile formation of the Pd -> Si interaction enables the smooth activation of the Si-Cl bond. The general mechanism of direct Si-Cl bond activation presented here may prove useful for the rational design of catalysis in the future.

Two different four-electron reductions of dioxygen (O2) on a metal surface are reproduced in homogeneous systems. The reaction of the highly unsaturated (56-electron) tetraruthenium tetrahydride complex 1 with O2 readily afforded the bis(μ3-oxo) complex 3 via a dissociative mechanism that includes large electronic and geometric changes, i.e., a four-electron oxidation of the metal centers and an increase of 8 in the number of valence electrons. In contrast, the tetraruthenium hexahydride complex 2 induces a smooth H-atom transfer to the incorporated O2 species, and the O-OH bond is cleaved to afford the mono(μ3-oxo) complex 4 via an associative mechanism. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the higher degree of unsaturation in the tetrahydride system induces a significant interaction between the tetraruthenium core and the O2 moiety, enabling the large changes required for the dissociative mechanism.
