    A procedure for quantifying the U 5f electronic covalency and degree of localization in U intermetallic compounds is presented. To this end, bulk sensitive hard and soft x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were utilized in combination with density-functional theory (DFT) plus dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) calculations. The energy dependence of the photoionization cross sections allows the disentanglement of the U 5f contribution to the valence band from the various other atomic subshells so the computational parameters in the DFT+DMFT can be reliably determined. Applying this method to UGa2 and UB2 as model compounds from opposite ends of the (de)localization range, we have achieved excellent simulations of the valence band and core-level spectra. The width in the distribution of atomic U 5f configurations contributing to the ground state, as obtained from the calculations, quantifies the correlated nature and degree of localization of the U 5f. The findings permit answering the longstanding question why different spectroscopic techniques give seemingly different numbers for the U 5f valence in intermetallic U compounds.

    Perovskites with Bi or Pb on the A site host a number of interesting and yet to be understood phenomena such as negative thermal expansion in BiNiO3. We employ hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy of Ni 2p core level as well as valence band to probe the electronic structure of BiNiO3 and PbNiO3. The experimental results supported by theoretical calculations using dynamical mean-field theory reveal essentially identical electronic structure of the Ni-O subsystem typical of Ni2+ charge-transfer insulators. The two materials are distinguished by filling of the Bi(Pb)-O antibonding states in the vicinity of the Fermi level, which is responsible for the Bi disproportionation in BiNiO3 at ambient pressure and absence of similar behavior in PbNiO3. The present experiments provide evidence for this conclusion by revealing the presence/absence of Bi/Pb 6s states at the top of the valence band in the two materials.

    We present a comprehensive experimental and computational study on A-site ordered perovskite oxides YCu3Co4O12, LaCu3Co4O12, and BiCu3Co4O12 including synthesis, transport, and magnetic characterization, high-pressure application, K- and L-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), Co 2p core-level x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations combined with dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) and +U scheme. An insulating behavior with a valence state of A(3+) Cu-3(similar to 3+) Co-4(similar to 3+) O-12(2-) is found for the three compounds at ambient and high-pressure conditions (up to similar to 55 GPa). A DFT calculation for YCu3Co4O12 uncovers the energetics of the Cu-O and Co-O bonding formation and crystal-field splitting, leading to a narrow-gap electronic structure with a hybrid orbital and element character near the Fermi energy. The stable low-spin configuration of the Co ion is studied in comparison to a canonical perovskite cobaltite LaCoO3. A DFT+ DMFT analysis of the Cu spin-correlation function indicates that the Zhang-Rice singlet description for the CuO4 plaquette is valid, while a hybridization with the Co 3d orbitals also contributes to the Cu spin screening. The presence of the hybridization between the Co and Cu orbitals is shown by the DFT + DMFT analysis for the Co L-2,L-3 XAS experimental spectra that exhibit unusual broad line shape. An increasing behavior of electrical resistance at elevated pressures is observed in all compounds and is interpreted based on a DFT + U simulation.

    <p>A novel complex transition metal oxide AgCu<sub>3</sub>Cr<sub>4</sub>O<sub>12</sub> has been obtained using high-pressure and high-temperature conditions of 12 GPa and 1223 K. The crystal structure is refined to be a cubic <i>AA'</i><sub>3</sub><i>B</i><sub>4</sub>O<sub>12</sub>-type quadruple perovskite structure based on the Rietveld refinement of the synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data. The density-functional theory calculation obtains a metallic band structure. The valence state is estimated to be Ag<sup>~1.3+</sup>Cu<sup>~2.2+</sup><sub>3</sub>Cr<sup>4+</sup><sub>4</sub>O<sub>12</sub> by bond valence sum and X-ray absorption spectroscopy analyses. The valence state on <i>A</i>Cu<sub>3</sub>Cr<sub>4</sub>O<sub>12</sub> series (<i>A</i> = Ag, Ca, La, Ce) sequentially transforms from Ag<sup>~1.3+</sup>Cu<sup>~2.2+</sup><sub>3</sub>Cr<sup>4+</sup><sub>4</sub>O<sub>12</sub>, Ca<sup>2+</sup>Cu<sup>2+</sup><sub>3</sub>Cr<sup>4+</sup><sub>4</sub>O<sub>12</sub>, La<sup>3+</sup>Cu<sup>(2+</sup><i><sup>δ</sup></i><sup>)+</sup><sub>3</sub>Cr<sup>(3.75–0.75</sup><i><sup>δ</sup></i><sup>)+</sup><sub>4</sub>O<sub>12</sub>, to Ce<sup>4+</sup>Cu<sup>2+</sup><sub>3</sub>Cr<sup>3.5+</sup><sub>4</sub>O<sub>12</sub>, where the electrons are doped into the <i>A'</i>-site (Cu<sup>~2.2+</sup> → Cu<sup>2+</sup>), followed by predominant doping into the <i>B</i>-site (Cr<sup>4+</sup> → Cr<sup>(3.75–0.75</sup><i><sup>δ</sup></i><sup>)+</sup> → Cr<sup>3.5+</sup>). Their electron doping sequence is distinguished from those reported in other quadruple perovskite oxides, proposing characteristic features of the <i>A</i>Cu<sub>3</sub>Cr<sub>4</sub>O<sub>12</sub> family.</p>

    Effective models focused on pertinent low-energy degrees of freedom have substantially contributed to our qualitative understanding of quantum materials. An iconic example, the Kondo model, was key to demonstrating that the rich phase diagrams of correlated metals originate from the interplay of localized and itinerant electrons. Modern electronic structure calculations suggest that to achieve quantitative material-specific models, accurate consideration of the crystal field and spin-orbit interactions is imperative. This poses the question of how local high-energy degrees of freedom become incorporated into a collective electronic state. Here, we use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) on CePd3 to clarify the fate of all relevant energy scales. We find that even spin-orbit excited states acquire pronounced momentum-dependence at low temperature—the telltale sign of hybridization with the underlying metallic state. Our results demonstrate how localized electronic degrees of freedom endow correlated metals with new properties, which is critical for a microscopic understanding of superconducting, electronic nematic, and topological states.

    We present a computational study of PbCoO3 at ambient and elevated pressure. We employ the static and dynamic treatment of local correlation in the form of density functional theory + U (DFT+U) and + dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT). Our results capture the experimentally observed crystal structures and identify the unsaturated Pb 6s - O 2p bonds as the driving force beyond the complex physics of PbCoO3. We provide a geometrical analysis of the structural distortions and we discuss their implications, in particular the internal doping, which triggers a transition between phases with and without local moments and a site-selective Mott transition in the low-pressure phase.

    A carrier doping by a hydrogen substitution in LaFeAsO1-x H x is known to cause two superconducting (SC) domes with the magnetic order at both end sides of the doping. In contrast, SmFeAsO1-x H x has a similar phase diagram but shows single SC dome. Here, we investigated the electronic and crystal structures for iron oxynitride LnFeAsO1-x H x (Ln = La, Sm) with the range of x = 0-0.5 by using x-ray absorption spectroscopy, x-ray emission spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction. For both compounds, we observed that the pre-edge peaks of x-ray absorption spectra near the Fe-K edge were reduced in intensity on doping. The character arises from the weaker As-Fe hybridization with the longer As-Fe distance in the higher doped region. We can reproduce the spectra near the Fe-K edge according to the Anderson impurity model with realistic valence structures using the local-density approximation (LDA) plus dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). For Ln = Sm, the integrated-absolute difference (IAD) analysis from x-ray Fe-Kβ emission spectra increases significantly. This is attributed to the enhancement of magnetic moment of Fe 3d electrons stemming from the localized picture in the higher doped region.     We examine electronic and crystal structures of iron-based superconductors LnFeAsO1-x H x (Ln = La, Sm) under pressure by means of x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES), and x-ray diffraction. In LaFeAsO the pre-edge peak on high-resolution XAS at the Fe-K absorption edge gains in intensity on the application of pressure up to 5.7 GPa and it saturates in the higher pressure region. We found integrated-absolute difference values on XES for Ln = La, corresponding to a spin state, decline on the application of pressure, and then it is minimized when the T c approaches the maximum at around 5 GPa. In contrast, such the optimum value was not detected for Ln = Sm. We reveal that the superconductivity is closely related to the lower spin state for Ln = La unlike Sm case. We observed that As height from the Fe basal plane and As-Fe-As angle on the FeAs4 tetrahedron for Ln = La deviate from the optimum values of the regular tetrahedron in superconducting (SC) phase, which has been widely accepted structural guide to SC thus far. In contrast, the structural parameters were held near the optimum values up to ∼15 GPa for Ln = Sm.

    A cubic quadruple perovskite oxide CeMn3Cr4O12 has been synthesized under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions of 8 GPa and 1273 K. The X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals that the Ce ions are in a trivalent state, as represented by the ionic model of Ce3+Mn3+3Cr3+4O12. The magnetic study demonstrates three independent antiferromagnetic transitions attributed to Ce (∼10 K), Mn (46 K), and Cr (133 K) ions. Furthermore, a magnetic field-induced antiferromagnetic-to-ferromagnetic (metamagnetic) transition of Ce3+ 4f moments is observed at low temperatures below 20 K, exhibiting a rare example of metamagnetism in the Ce3+-oxides. This finding represents that the 3d-electron magnetic sublattices play a role in the metamagnetism of 4f-electron magnetic moments, demonstrating a new aspect of the 3d-4f complex electron systems.

    A novel quadruple perovskite oxide CeCu3Co4O12 has been synthesized in high-pressure and high-temperature conditions of 12 GPa and 1273 K. Rietveld refinement of the synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction pattern reveals that this oxide crystallizes in a cubic quadruple perovskite structure with the 1:3-type ordering of Ce and Cu ions at the A-site. X-ray absorption spectroscopy analysis demonstrates the valence-state transitions in the ACu3Co4O12 series (A = Ca, Y, Ce) from Ca2+Cu3+3Co3.25+4O12 to Y3+Cu3+3Co3+4O12 to Ce4+Cu2.67+3Co3+4O12, where the electrons are doped in the order from B-site (Co3.25+ → Co3+) to A′-site (Cu3+ → Cu2.67+). This electron-doping sequence is in stark contrast to the typical B-site electron doping for simple ABO3-type perovskite and quadruple perovskites CaCu3B4O12 (B = V, Cr, Mn), further differing from the monotonical A′-site electron doping for Na1-xLaxMn3Ti4O12 and A′- and B-site electron doping for AMn3V4O12 (A = Na, Ca, La). The differences in the electron-doping sequences are interpreted by rigid-band models, proposing a wide variety of electronic states for the complex transition-metal oxides containing the multiple valence-variable ions.

    A novel perovskite oxide, CaCu3Rh4O12, has been synthesized under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions (15 GPa and 1273 K). Rietveld refinement of synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data indicates that this compound crystallizes in a cubic AA'3B4O12-type perovskite structure. Synchrotron X-ray absorption and photoemission spectroscopy measurements reveal that the Cu and Rh valences are nearly trivalent. The spectroscopic analysis based on calculations suggests that the appropriate ionic model of this compound is Ca(2+)Cu(∼2.8+)3Rh(∼3.4+)4O12, as opposed to the conventional Ca(2+)Cu(2+)3Rh(4+)4O12. The uncommon valence state of this compound is attributed to the relative energy levels of the Cu 3d and Rh 4d orbitals, in which the large crystal-field splitting energy of the Rh 4d orbitals is substantial.
