Abstract

The Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) is widely used to measure empathy; however, the factor structure and scoring of the IRI have been inconsistent. Previous studies showed a bifactor model with empathic concern (EC) and perspective taking (PT) as a better model for the Chinese version of the IRI. This study investigated whether this model was better than other candidate models for the Japanese version of the IRI. In Study 1, we compared the model fit parameters of confirmatory factor analysis using datasets from previous studies. The results showed that the bifactor model with EC and PT was the best among 42 models. Study 2 investigated which concepts were extracted in a bifactor model that was derived from web‐based survey data. Results showed that the general factor in the bifactor model might measure the compound characteristics of both EC and PT. Additionally, the extracted EC factor might measure avoidance of harm to others, and the extracted PT factor might reference inferring others' minds. This study suggests that the bifactor model with EC and PT has the best factor structure and that the extracted factors reflect different aspects of empathy.

Empathy and mindfulness are currently major topics of scientific interest. Although it is well-known that mindfulness—typically as an outcome related to meditation—generates empathy at the state level, only a small number of studies have documented the trait (i.e., personality) level association between mindfulness and empathy. Furthermore, the underlying mechanisms (subcomponents and mediator variables) that support this association remain unclear. Thus, here, with a focus on the trait level, we investigated relationships among multiple subcomponents of trait mindfulness and trait empathy (Study 1). Next, we reexamined the aforementioned relationships in an independent sample, with the further aim of investigating relevant mediation factors (Study 2). We found that two attention-related components of trait mindfulness—observing and acting with awareness—reliably and positively related to both affective and cognitive dimensions of trait empathy (i.e., empathic concern and perspective taking). Furthermore, we found that effortful control, reappraisal, and trait alexithymia mediated relationships between the aforementioned attention-related components of trait mindfulness and empathic concern. Taken together, our results suggest that the links between mindfulness and empathy are multidimensional and complex. These findings may ultimately contribute to an understanding of the mechanisms underlying the positive effects of meditation on empathy.

The purpose of this research is to examine the influence of
environmental factors of learning commons on the creativity of
learners. University students (N = 48) undertook a creative and
non-creative work task in two learning environments: learning commons
or private study space. We investigated whether the performance of
participants for each task differed depending on learning
environments. We also examined the influence of presenting information
on learning environments and of prior experiences of using learning
commons. The results indicated that the performance of participants
for the creative task in learning commons by the group with prior
experience was superior to that of the group without such experience.
Moreover, the performance of participants for the non-creative task in
learning commons was superior to that in the private study space.
Furthermore, presenting information on the learning environment to
learners reduced their performance for the non-creative task in both
learning environments. Based on the aforementioned results, we have
discussed the effects of physical environments in learning commons,
and how they could adequately improve the design and practical usage
of the learning environments. Based on f i ndings, we suggested
approaches in which learners can eff i ciently perform autonomous and
collaborative learning in learning commons.
