This study aims to investigate the effect of different types of technology transfer organizations (TTOs) on university technology transfer performance using national-level data on industry-academia collaboration in Japan. Three types of TTOs were identified based on their organizational structures—internal, external-integrated, and external-extensive. Using Poisson regression and a population-averaged model, two hypotheses were tested with supportive results: universities using an external TTO perform better in terms of patent licensing income than those using an internal TTO; and smaller universities are more likely to perform better with a dedicated, external-integrated TTO. These findings suggest that TTOs should be independent of the university’s bureaucratic system. However, a high degree of proximity for communication with researchers is important.
This study presents implications for government innovation policy, suggesting that universities should be encouraged to select a TTO type that aligns with their needs and objectives and to carefully weigh independence and proximity when choosing a type. It also suggests that researchers should consider the history and reality of each country’s innovation system when analyzing industry-academia collaboration. Additionally, we provide a brief overview of Japan’s technology transfer policies.

As shown in the AUTM's lifecycle model, technology transfer from universities to the private sector is one major pathway to commercialize scientific discoveries. However, few empirical studies have analyzed the relationship between characteristics of a technology transfer process and commercializing performance. Considering technology transfer as a management phenomenon, this is an important gap to be filled.
Using micro-level data from 39 technology transfer projects, we analyzed the causal conditions that make a new product based on university-originated invention launch to the market. A crisp-set qualitative comparative analysis (cs/QCA) is carried out, focusing on the range of TTO's value chain and value-adding activities of licensing associates belonging to the Japanese technology transfer offices. This analysis reveals that the combination of elaborate pre-marketing before a patent application and boundary spanning on product development stage is the key enabler of technology commercialization in Japan.
Our findings suggest that a technology transfer model suited to the Japanese context is different from that common in the United States, often referred to as a "marketing model." Then we name the new one "hands-on model." A unique approach is needed because of the differences in the national innovation ecosystems between these countries.

In recent years, Japanese policymakers have shown increasing interest in medium-sized enterprises (MSEs). However, the latest literature review indicates that a common theoretical perspective is being lost in MSE studies in Japan. The purpose of this paper is to reveal what topics have been mentioned in Japan’s leading economic newspapers, using text-mining methods, and to identify research agendas that MSE studies in the future should address.
The analysis covers 626 articles published in the Nihon Keizai Shimbun (known as Nikkei) and its affiliate newspapers from 1981 to 2020. According to the results of the analysis, the topics that lack adequate academic research despite the practical and policy demands are as follows. 1) Top management related issues, especially the training of executive candidates and recruiting professional managers. 2) Strategic management, including internationalization and growth strategies of companies from medium-sized to large.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the strategies adopted by long-established companies for identifying the factors promoting their survival in hostile environments. While Japan has the world’s largest number of companies older than a century, there is a scarcity of empirical studies using objective data about them. The majority of prior research is based on surveys of long-lasting companies and focuses on the commonalities of the subjective responses. On the contrary, this study collects financial information on survivors (firms that have remained in existence for more than 300 years) as well as bankrupts (firms that had moderate longevity but failed after the bursting of the bubble economy) from 1978 to 1992. We conducted a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fs/QCA) using data from 18 listed Japanese firms to categorize the strategies of both the survivors and bankrupts.
Analytical findings indicate that there are three categories of typical strategies adopted by the survivors. The first category consists of leveraging large assets along with a broad business domain to maintain an above-average growth rate even in unfavorable circumstances. The second category is different from the first and pursues stability and financial security due to its large scale and broad scope. The third category is growth-oriented and based on stable cash flow by relatively small but diversified companies. This analysis further reveals a typical pattern of bankruptcy. It is partially similar to the third survival strategy, but does not achieve commensurate growth with the expansion of its scope. To put it differently, a small to medium-sized enterprise aiming to realize long-term survival needs to implement an entrepreneurial survival strategy that involves moving into growing domains along with withdrawing from declining markets.

Following the publication of Hideichiro Nakamura’s pioneering work, Medium-sized Vital Enterprises, in 1964, some small-business researchers in Japan became interested in medium-sized enterprises. By the early 1980s, management scholars were following the trend. Despite the high level of interest from practitioners and policy makers, this research domain has inexplicably been witnessing a recent decline. This article presents a narrative review of the existing literature on medium-sized enterprises from the viewpoint of management studies. The findings show that the focus of each researcher in this domain is disparate and that a new theoretical foundation must be sought to satisfy practical needs.

There are several strategic thresholds in a corporate lifecycle, and the initial public offering (IPO) is a representative milestone. To develop the theory on the multifunctional nature and the role change along a lifecycle of corporate governance mechanisms, the organizational growth process from establishment to post-IPO period is considered. The result of the single case study shows that governance mechanisms can promote and facilitate the strategy, regardless of whether it is oriented to exploration or exploitation. Furthermore, the “pre-autonomous stage” where a company is governed by exogenous mechanisms is discussed.

The purpose of this article is to theorize the concept of “re-founding” of small business implemented by its successor. Since the decline in performance of Japanese firms for the last several decades seems to correspond to the decline of each industry. In other words, it is not enough to simply win the competition within the industry through product or process innovations for long-term survival of family-owned small business. But also this business should transit from the original one to the new type. This is the most significant entrepreneurial activity in family business and it is called re-founding in this article. In order to develop this concept theoretically we also investigate how the successor of family-owned small business carries out re-founding, focusing on pinpoint business definition which is determined by the combination of “what is the main product that a company sells” and “who is its key customer.” The findings from the exploratory case study show that business structures will be overhauled in the process of re-founding and those changes are organized into four aspects: (1) restructuring of operations in the operational dimension which will provoke conflicts with employees; (2) (re-)organizing of the management layer in the administrative dimension according to organizational growth life cycle; (3) reconstruction of business categories in strategic dimension, including disposition of unprofitable or old businesses; (4) generational change of employees, derived from the nature of invisible assets. We address a new perspective based on paying attention to fundamental factor of strategic management explicitly to reconsider the extant literature about small- and medium-sized enterprises and family business.

This paper is a case study of a Japanese Manga e-book venture entering the emerging Chinese comic market. During the creation of a platform business, the firm might confront with various business troubles. We illustrate the firm's muddling-through to overcome difficulties through the organizing process based on K. E. Weick's (1979) organizing theory and extending its framework. Through our analysis focusing on processes of organizing and re-organizing the business model, we suggest the following; there is interactive communication between the firm and other actors, which recursively refer the business model; such a recursive process involves tactical sensemaking to sustain the business model organizing.

It is expected that the inventions created by universities will bring about innovation and contribute to the economic growth of the country and various regions. However, it is difficult to claim from an international perspective that the industry-academia collaboration and technology transfers in Japan are doing enough in activating university research on societal and organizational levels. Through analysis of practice of our second author, who has 19 years of experience with industry-academia collaboration, we tried to elucidate in this research what sort of conditions need to be reached and what sort of technology transfer management needs to be in place for university technology transfers to be put on the market. The results of the analysis showed that the success or failure of university technology transfers being put on the market were greatly influenced by whether research development management was done after licensing on the industrialization process. On the other hand, it was also decided that there is another path (the “praying to god route”). In the future, to advance our country’s industry-academia collaboration and technology transfers, we need to organize the easier route and debate what the best practices are for taking technology transfers to market.

There is a growing consensus that knowledge creation at universities and other research institutions is the engine of the economy and society. Industry-academia collaborations began in earnest with the enactment of the Bayh-Dole Act in the U.S. in 1980, and in Japan, technology transfer organizations (TTOs) have been established nationwide in anticipation of the enactment of the Law for the Promotion of Technology Transfer from Universities in 1998. The purpose of this study is to focus on management research within the overall research on industry-university collaboration, and to gain an overall picture of the research field through a systematic review. The results of this preliminary survey indicate that management research in the field of industry-academia collaboration as a whole is an unexplored topic. In addition, it became clear that there is a lack of accumulated research on intermediary organizations in particular. Implications for future research are to systematically organize findings on the positioning and role of intermediary organizations and identify valid perspectives for management research, taking into account the pathways to commercialization of university-originated technologies and the diversity of research fields.

質的データ分析(qualitative data analysis: QDA)を支援するソフトウェアはCAQDAS(computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software)と総称され、いくつかの定番が存在します。
