    We investigated whether the influence of age and individual differences in mental model construction level affect the evaluation of appearance and functionality when users select household electrical appliances based only on appearance. Results showed that older (age 66–80) adults emphasized usability more than young (age 20–34) adults did. Moreover, users with high proficiency in mental model construction focused more on usability than did those with less advanced mental models.

    A quantitative, single usability measurement is useful for human-centered design. However, the measurement is commonly not sufficiently conducted upstream (design phase), but it is conducted downstream (evaluation phase) after design development. Therefore, in this article, we propose usability metrics and a severity rating method for use during the design development phase. With the aim to develop an easy method for quantifying usability based on current inspection methods (i.e., usability metrics based on inspection methods, or UMI), we investigated the various aspects of the proposed method. Then, the effectiveness of usability metrics was determined by experiment. We believe that the metrics and methods described in this article will be employed by usability practitioners, including human factor engineers, designers, and usability engineers.

    In user-interface design, it is important to examine users’ mental model. However, we don’t think mental models are sufficiently examined in the design development process because they cannot be easily examined. Therefore, in this study we aimed to propose questionnaire items for measuring the level of mental model building that can be easily examined. To begin with, questionnaire item candidates were proposed based on the findings of previous studies. Then, an analysis of the questionnaire and items was conducted and the items were selected. Next, reliability and validity were proven from multiple aspects. Additionally, the connection between the questionnaire and user-interface operation was examined by an experiment. As a result, we confirmed that a questionnaire is an effective method for measuring the level of mental model building.

    In this study, the verification of the questionnaire for the level of mental model building was examined from viewpoint of the actual users' operation. The user testing is conducted to grasp the level of mental model building. The validity of the questionnaire was investigated in terms of (a) operation time of the digital camera, (b) operation errors of the digital camera and (c) Structural model / Functional mode (the test result for measurement the level of mental model building after the operation). Then, the correlation between the score of the user testing and the questionnaire score was calculated. As the result, the significant correlation is confirmed between each score and the questionnaire score. Then, we believed the proposed questionnaire can be measured the users' mental model building level in the user-interfaces operation. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

    The purpose of this study is to understand who user' property affects the ability to manipulate a digital camera. The N-back task, the action control scale, usability test, structural test, functional test, protocol analysis and some questioner are used to understand user' distinction. The relationships among each property and performance were cleared by correlation analysis. As a result, functional models about the camera are most important to use well. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

    The objective of this research is to propose a user-interface design index that corresponds with mental model structural elements. A total of 35 user-interface design indexes were extracted from previous design related rules and design guidelines that pertain to design indexes. Next, the user-interface design indexes were linked to the mental model structural elements and a formal concept analysis was done in order to determine the relationship between them. The mental model structural elements were classified and structured according to human information processing, functional and structural models. Finally, we describe how designers can easily construct user-interface designs based mainly on the user-interface design index and mental model structural elements. © 2012 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

    Users can accurately operate user interfaces by giving the design that support structuring a mental model. Then, grasping the elements for structuring mental models is important for friendly design. In this study, we aimed at grasping the elements for structuring mental models by examining 9 elements reported previous study. Firstly, the level of structuring a mental model and the utterances were obtained by operation experiment. The utterances were classified into 9 categories depending on 9 elements and were counted. The elements were examined from a connection between the level and the number of utterances in each element. Additionally, analyses were conducted to grasp the relationship among the elements from 4 aspects. As a result, the elements were narrowed down to 7 from 9. Then, each elements and the relationship among them were discussed.

    In recent years interaction design has looked to questions of most typically positive emotions such as satisfaction, pleasure and delight. This study investigated the factors of FUN as joy and pleasure, which are created in interaction between human and products, and found their relationship. We aim for gaining useful information when we design products. First, the questionnaire regarding SCT (sentence completion test) were conducted and were analyzed by DEMATEL method (Decision MAking Trial & Evaluation Laboratory) As a result, it was found that the factors of FUN were clarified and examined the relationship.

    The goal of this study is a finding about an attitude toward electric appliances apples to appliances design and usability. Therefore, in this study, a relationship between attitude to users’ electrical appliances and cognitive elements required for the operation (Knowledge and Mental models) was investigated. For that purpose, two experiments were conducted. First, a relationship between the attitude and a knowledge structure toward electric appliances was grasped by a questionnaire in the 1st experiment. The knowledge structure was extracted within a Sentence Completion Test, and was grasped using Key Graph and Formal Concept Analysis. Next, a relationship between the attitude and a degree of mental model construction in an interface operation was grasped by a questionnaire and an experiment of GUI operation in the 2nd experiment. The degree of mental model construction was understood from the view of Functional Model and Structural Model. As a result of these experiments, it has been understood that the attitude relates to a depth of the knowledge, an originality of an opinion on electrical appliances and a construction of the Functional Model.
