BACKGROUND: Reappraisal, an emotion regulation strategy, includes reinterpretation and affect labeling involving verbalizing emotions. In general, reappraisal is supported by lateral prefrontal cortical regions, which are also known to underlie cognitive regulation. Other research has shown that affect labeling combined with reappraisal of negative emotions increases lateral prefrontal cortex activity more than reappraisal alone does, suggesting that affect labeling facilitates emotional regulation. However, the influence of affect labeling on the efficacy of reappraisal in reducing subjective negative emotions has not been determined. METHODS: In the experiment, 35 participants (mean age = 28.2 years (SD = 9.63); 12 women and 23 men) viewed vignettes that aroused negative emotion. Then, they rated subjective negative emotions as baseline values. Following the baseline rating, the task branched into four conditions, combining affect labeling and emotion regulation factors. In the affect-labeling factor, participants selected emotional labels consistent with their own emotions or not. Regarding the emotion regulation factor, participants engaged in reappraisal to regulate their negative emotions. Throughout the experiment, the intensity of negative emotions was measured three times, mirroring the baseline measurement. Oxyhemoglobin (OxyHb) signal values in prefrontal cortex regions during tasks were measured by functional near-infrared spectroscopy. RESULTS: Differences between the subjective negative emotion ratings at baseline and after reappraisal indicated that reappraisal significantly reduced negative emotion with and without affect labeling (t (1173.05) = 29.97, p < 0.001), and the combination of affect labeling and reappraisal was less effective in regulating negative emotions at the subjective level than reappraisal without affect labeling (t (1172.03) = 3.15, p < 0.01). Additionally, there was an increase in OxyHb signal in the bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal and right ventral prefrontal cortices while participants performed reappraisal with affect labeling. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that affect labeling, when performed prior to cognitive reappraisal, may influence the process of negative emotion regulation in complex ways. The interaction between affect labeling and reappraisal appears to modulate prefrontal cortex activity, potentially reflecting changes in cognitive processing during emotion regulation attempts. These results highlight the need for further investigation into the intricate relationship between different emotion regulation strategies.

BACKGROUND: Individuals tend to have an optimism bias, processing desirable information more frequently than undesirable information. However, people who have been diagnosed with depression often have a more pessimistic view of the future. A recent study suggests that future expectations in individuals with dysphoria become more optimistic when asked to make optimistic future predictions about the future. In the present study, we investigated the differential effects of induced optimism training which making optimistic future prediction to change future beliefs in normal participants with various levels of dysphoria (low, mild, high). METHODS: We recruited normal participants (n = 69) from a local university students and divided participants into three groups (low, mild, high dysphoria) by measuring dysphoric mood. These three groups were assigned to the induced optimism training or control condition. After the training, participants performed the two-stage belief updating task. In the first stage, participants estimated their personal probability of experiencing adverse events while being presented with the average probability of the event occurring to a living person. This information could be desirable for participants(when presented with a probability that was below their estimation) or undesirable (when presented with a probability that was above their estimation). To assess how desirable versus undesirable information influenced beliefs, participants estimated their personal probability of experiencing the events again in the second stage. The amount of update error was calculated as the difference between the estimates in the first stage and the second stage. The difference between the errors was classified as the update bias. RESULTS: After the induced optimism training, individuals with the mild dysphoria demonstrated a higher update bias than low (p < .001) and the high dysphoria (p < .05) group in induced optimism condition. Significant differences were not found in control group. Results indicates that individuals in the mild dysphoria group showed an increased update bias after being exposed to the induced optimism training Dysphoric mood and trait optimism remained unchanged in both the experimental and control groups. CONCLUSIONS: Results suggest that induced optimism training has potential to change individuals with mild dysphoria perceptions' about the future.

The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in the cognition of bodily sensations before and after video-feedback (VF). In a preliminary investigation, undergraduate students responded to the Social Phobia Scale (SPS), Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) and Cognition of Bodily Sensations in Social Situation Scale (CBS). Previous study used SPS and SIAS and suggested that social anxiety in undergraduates could be divided into five clusters labeled Generalized, Performance, Interaction, Average and No-anxiety. In a main experiment, speeches made by participants who agreement with join this experiment were video recorded, and feedback was provided. CBS score and Subjective Units of Disturbance (SUD) were assessed before and after the speech, and after VF. Mental sweats were also assessed starting from before, until after the speech. Results indicated that there were no differences in SUD, or mental sweats in any of the social anxiety subtypes, before the speech. However, participants with Generalized social anxiety compared to other subtypes showed more worry about negative evaluations from others regarding their bodily sensations, as assessed by the CBS. In addition, a decrease in this CBS score was observed in Generalized social anxiety and all the subtypes. These results suggest that subtypes of participants with high Generalized social anxiety might have unique cognitions of bodily sensation that are affected by video feedback.

The present study examined effectiveness of combined cognitive behavioral group therapy (CBGT) and medication for patients with major depression. The cognitive behavioral group therapy program, which consisted of 12 structured sessions including psycho-education, self-monitoring, behavior activation, challenging and restructuring negative thinking, was conducted by clinical psychologists at Hiroshima University Hospital. At baseline, termination of treatment, and 12-month follow-up, patients (N-74) completed the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) , the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D) , the Global Assessment of Functioning scale (GAF) , the 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) , the Automatic Thought Questionnaire-Revised (ATQ-R) , and the Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale (DAS). The post-treatment scores on the 4 measurement instruments were significantly lower after the treatment. In addition, the scores on the Global Assessment of Functioning scale and 36-item Short-Form Health Survey were significantly higher than the baseline scores. In other words, the patients improved on all measurements of psychosocial functioning and mood symptoms. Their improvement in depressive symptoms, psychosocial functioning, and dysfunctional cognitions were sustained at 12 months following the completion of the group-cognitive behavioral therapy.

Pain is a multidimensional experience. Previous psychological studies have shown that a person's subjective pain threshold can change when certain emotions are recognized. We examined this association by using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) (15 healthy subjects) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) (19 healthy subjects). Subjects experienced pain stimuli in different emotional contexts induced by the presentation of sad, happy or neutral facial stimuli. They also rated their subjective pain intensity. We found: 1) The intensity of subjective pain ratings increased in the sad emotional context, 2) pain-related activation in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) was more pronounced in the sad context, and we demonstrated amygdala to ACC connections during the experience of pain in the sad context, and 3) event-related desynchronization (ERD) of lower beta bands in the right hemisphere after pain stimuli was larger in the sad emotional condition. These results show that emotional stimuli can modulate neural responses to pain stimuli, and that it may be relevant to understanding the broader relationship between somatic complaints and negative emotion.

The purpose of this study was to investigate negative bias on self-referent processing in depression, focused on the emotion congruent effects in a depressed trait and an experimentally induced depressed mood state based on integration approach. Self-relevant ratings of personality trait words were examined among a depressed trait group, non-depressed trait group and average depressed trait group. Results indicated that the emotion congruent effect was found on each group. The effect of trait on emotion and self-relevant information processing was strong.

We propose a novel approach for the dimension reduction of high dimensional data to make the data available for conventional statistical evaluations. Our method is based on nonparametric multiple Gaussian clustering, in which we assume that in each cluster block, the instances follow an independent and identically (i.i.d.) univariate Gaussian distribution. We show theoretically that our model can fit multivariate Gaussian distributions with exchangeable features. We further show how the clusters derived with this specific model can be used to effectively reduce the dimension of data taking into account associations between attributes. Finally, we demonstrate our approach in an application to resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data, which implies subtypes of depression may be characterized by the treatment effect of antidepressant drug SSRI.

Our preliminary study investigated the relationship between early life stress (ELS) and the degree of frontal activations during a resting state and self-oriented task using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). From 22 healthy participants, regional hemodynamic changes in front-temporal channels were recorded during 5 min resting states, and execution of a self-oriented task (color-preference judgment) and a control task (color-similarity judgment). Using a child abuse and trauma scale, ELS was quantified. We observed that ELS showed a negative correlation with medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) activation during both resting state and color-preference judgment. Additionally, we found that, for participants with higher ELS, decisions in the color-preference judgment were based on an external criterion (color similarity) rather than an internal criterion (subjective preference). Taken together, our neuronal and behavioral findings show that high ELS is related to lower MPFC activation during both rest and self-oriented tasks.

In order to clarify the neurophysiologcal mechanism of maladaptation to stress and its treatments, we conducted neuroimaging studies by using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetoencephalography (MEG). Then, we showed some data from our experiments in this paper as below. At first, cognition of psychological stress is related to a network with the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and the limbic system. Secondly, the anticipation of stressful stimuli regulate the sensory input in the perception area via activation in the PFC. Thirdly, serotonin controls the future reward prediction in human brain. Lastly, the emotional support regulates psychological pain in ostracism via the PFC.
